BBC Sport identified the company’s work transporting bulk gases, liquids and powders as the source of his money. His long-running involvement with Middlesbrough FC is another part of his business story, but the available records do not establish a reliable current figure for his personal net worth.
Bulkhaul is the source of Gibson’s wealth
Bulkhaul is the central answer to how Gibson made his money. BBC Sport described his fortune as coming from transporting bulk gases, liquids and powders through Bulkhaul Limited. That 2012 report establishes the business origin; it is not a current valuation of Gibson’s wealth. BBC Sport’s 20 March 2012 report also covered the company’s role in Middlesbrough FC’s finances.

A profile in Tees Business dates Bulkhaul’s founding to three years before Gibson joined Middlesbrough’s board in 1984. The sequence matters: his business was established before his prominent role at the club, so the club’s later financial needs should not be mistaken for the original source of his wealth.
How Bulkhaul connects to Middlesbrough FC and other interests
The business sits within a wider corporate structure. The MFC Foundation trustees page identifies The Gibson O’Neill Company Limited as the holding company of Bulkhaul Limited, Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company (1986) Limited, and Rockliffe Hall Limited. This helps explain how Gibson’s business, football and hospitality interests are connected at group level. It does not mean that Gibson personally owns every company directly.

Gibson’s involvement with Middlesbrough FC
Accounts of exactly when Gibson became involved differ in emphasis. Tees Business says he joined the club’s board in 1984 and later led a consortium that rescued it from liquidation in 1986. BBC Sport described him as involved with Middlesbrough from 1986 and said he became chairman in 1995. These dates can reflect distinct milestones—board entry, rescue and broader involvement—and should not be collapsed into a single date.
BBC Sport reported in March 2012 that Gibson owned 90% of the club at that time. That is a historical figure, not a current ownership percentage. The current Companies House control record for Middlesbrough Football & Athletic Company Holdings Limited names Gibson O’Neill Company Limited as holding 75% or more of that holding company, and separately lists Stephen Gibson as having significant influence or control. What the club-funding figure does—and does not—mean
In the BBC’s 2012 report, Middlesbrough chief executive Neil Bausor said: “Our parent company has backed MFC at the level of approximately £1m per month.” The amount referred to parent-company support during the accounts period discussed at the time. It is not Gibson’s salary or personal income, and it should not be read as a current monthly commitment.

The cited sources establish that Gibson built wealth through Bulkhaul and identify several companies within the wider Gibson O’Neill group. They do not establish a reliable current personal net-worth figure. A company’s value, an owner’s personal wealth, liabilities and money put into a football club are different measures. Without a dated valuation method that accounts for those distinctions, a precise net-worth estimate should be treated as unverified rather than as an established fact.
