Token unlocks and emissions increase the supply that could become available to holders or the market. They can put pressure on a cryptocurrency’s price if demand and liquidity do not absorb that supply—but an unlock does not mean recipients sell, and neither unlocks nor emissions provide a reliable price forecast on their own. To assess a particular token, look at the release relative to circulating supply, who receives it, the timing, market depth, demand, and any offsetting burns.
What token unlocks and emissions mean
Binance Research defines tokenomics as “the study of determining and evaluating the economic characteristics of a cryptographic token” (Binance Research, 2022). For supply analysis, two important parts of tokenomics are unlocks and emissions.

Token unlocks release restricted tokens
A token unlock is the scheduled release of tokens that were previously restricted, often under a vesting arrangement. The tokens may become transferable or eligible for sale when released. That change in availability does not establish that recipients sell them: they may hold, stake, or use the tokens instead.
Emissions add newly issued tokens
Emissions are newly issued tokens, often distributed as staking rewards or ecosystem incentives. Unlike an unlock that may arrive on a particular date or in a cliff, emissions can add supply continuously. A token’s allocation, vesting period, and emission schedule therefore matter alongside its burn mechanisms and demand.

How additional supply can affect price
When supply grows, each existing token may represent a smaller share of the total supply, and more tokens may be available to sell. But supply growth alone does not determine the price move. The effect depends on whether holders sell, whether buyers absorb the tokens, how much the market already expects the release, and how liquid the market is. A small release relative to liquid supply may have less impact than a larger release, though size alone does not settle the question.
Emissions can be partly offset by token burns, so gross issuance is not the same as net supply growth. Also, a high staking reward quoted in tokens does not by itself establish a positive return in purchasing power: the token’s value and supply can change.

What to check before assessing an unlock
Use these questions to evaluate the potential supply impact without treating the event as a price signal:

Compare the number of tokens unlocking with the supply that is already circulating, not only with the unlock’s dollar value.
- How is it released? A cliff release makes tokens available at once; linear or frequent releases spread availability over time.
- Who receives the tokens? Identify the recipient category and likely use, but do not assume recipients intend to sell.
- What is net issuance after burns? Consider both newly issued tokens and tokens removed from supply.
- Can the market absorb the supply? Check market depth, liquidity, demand, and broader market conditions around the event.
- How does circulating supply compare with fully diluted supply? Fully diluted valuation (FDV) can help frame the gap between circulating and potential total supply, but it is not a forecast of realized value.

What the empirical evidence shows—and does not show
The available findings do not support a rule that every unlock lowers a token’s price by a fixed amount. Results vary by asset and statistical method, and observational relationships do not establish that unlocks cause price changes.
An ETH study reports different results across methods
A 2026 study in Frontiers in Blockchain analyzed bi-weekly ETH observations from 15 August 2021 through 30 September 2025. Its Spearman table reported a positive association between ETH price and unlocks (ρ = 0.697, p < 0.001; N = 104). Its regression summary reported a negative unlock coefficient (β = −0.22, p < 0.001), while its short-run error-correction model reported a positive coefficient for changes in unlocks (β = 0.054, p = 0.042).

These figures come from different specifications and are not interchangeable estimates. In particular, β = −0.22 is a regression coefficient, not a 22% price decline. The study is observational, reports substantial relationships among predictors—including TVL and unlocks—and concerns ETH; it does not establish a causal price effect applicable to other tokens. It also reports positive relationships for TVL and, in its regression, fees and burns.

A vendor-reported sample result is not a universal effect
In an article dated 29 June 2026, Chawapat Peechapat of Tokenomist reported a one-month median relative move of −4.85% versus matched peers for n = 221, within a broader sample of 236 unlock events from 16 June 2024 through 31 March 2026; the article says price data ran through 16 June 2026. It describes returns as measured relative to Bitcoin. The accessible article body is subscriber-only, limiting independent review of its methods and subgroup interpretation. Treat the number as a Tokenomist-reported sample result, not a general estimate of what an unlock does to price.

Use unlock schedules as context, not a forecast
An unlock tracker can help identify when supply may become available, but it cannot tell you whether recipients will sell or whether demand will absorb the tokens. Pair schedule data with project documentation and the token’s supply, liquidity, and demand conditions. The same caution applies to emissions: ongoing issuance matters, but its price effect depends on what happens to demand and net supply.
