The bank can identify what it received and whether the credit is pending or settled; your my Social Security account and SSA can confirm what the agency records about your benefits. A deposit label or a caller’s explanation alone cannot establish that the money is yours to keep.
If you are asking, “How do I know if this Social Security deposit is real?” or “Why did I get an extra Social Security payment?”, the answer is to compare records—not to guess from the amount, timing, or description. An unexpected payment may be legitimate, but it may also need explanation. Use the steps below to verify it safely.

Verify an unexpected deposit in this order
Use contact routes you find independently. Do not click a link in an unexpected text or email, call a number supplied by a caller, or follow instructions to move money. Keep the deposit date, amount, bank transaction details, and any SSA notice available while you investigate. Do not share your full Social Security number, account number, or other identifying details in a public post.

The bank and SSA provide different parts of the picture. Your bank can explain how a credit appears in its transaction system and whether it has settled. SSA can tell you what its own records show about your benefits, payments, and notices. Neither a bank description nor an incoming caller’s claim can replace checking both records through official channels.

1. Check your SSA payment record
- Type SSA.gov into your browser yourself, then sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
- Review the benefit and payment information for the relevant month. Compare the date and amount with the credit in your bank account.
- Look for notices or account changes, including changes to your direct deposit information. SSA’s scam guidance and OIG explain that beneficiaries can review and change direct deposit information through their personal account: Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams.
Do not stop at asking whether the amount “looks right.” Check the relevant month and the details available in the SSA account, and compare them with your bank record. If you see an account change you did not make, treat that as a reason to contact SSA and your bank promptly through independently verified channels.
An SSA entry helps establish what the agency records, but it does not by itself explain the bank’s transaction status. If you cannot access your account or the payment remains unclear, contact SSA through a number or office reached from its official site.
2. Ask your bank what the transaction record shows
- Call the number printed on your bank card or statement, or contact the bank through a channel you independently know is genuine.
- Ask whether the credit is pending or settled, what origin and transaction information the bank can see, and whether there are any related reversals or account changes.
- If you did not authorize a change to your account or direct deposit details, tell the bank promptly and ask what steps it recommends to secure the account.
A pending credit and a settled transaction are not the same status. Ask the bank to explain what it can see rather than assuming a posting label confirms where the money came from or whether it is yours to keep. Record the transaction identifier, date, amount, and the bank representative’s guidance for your own follow-up.

The bank and SSA answer different questions: the bank can describe the transaction it received; SSA can explain what it records about your benefit. SSA’s guidance for a missing expected electronic payment says to contact the bank first because a bank delay may affect when a payment posts. See How do I report a missing payment? That guidance concerns a missing expected payment, but it also illustrates why bank transaction status and SSA’s payment record should be checked separately.
3. Contact SSA directly if the credit is still unexplained
Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or use an SSA office contact reached through SSA.gov. Explain that you received a credit you do not recognize and provide the date, amount, and transaction details requested through that official channel. Ask whether SSA’s record shows a payment for that amount and whether there is a notice or account change related to it.
Keep the inquiry focused on the records: identify the payment date and amount, describe what your bank says about the credit, and ask SSA what its records show. Have any relevant notice available. Do not publish or send sensitive account details to someone who contacted you unexpectedly; disclose only information requested by an official representative reached through a verified route.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What an unexpected credit does—and does not—prove
A deposit may be a legitimate benefit payment, but an unfamiliar credit alone does not prove that SSA issued it, that it is a new or increased benefit, or that you are entitled to keep it. Nor does an unexpected amount by itself mean SSA has identified an overpayment. Compare the bank’s transaction details with SSA’s own payment record and ask SSA to explain any mismatch.
In particular, do not treat “extra” as a diagnosis. A payment that is larger than you expected might prompt a question, but the amount alone does not establish its reason. Similarly, an unexplained credit is not automatically an overpayment. SSA’s overpayment guidance describes a formal agency determination and notice, including the reason and amount; follow that notice process if one arrives.
| What you have | What it establishes | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| A bank credit or deposit description | The bank has recorded a credit; the description alone may not establish your eligibility or the final source. | Ask the bank about pending or settled status and available origin and transaction details, then compare with SSA. |
| A matching payment in your SSA account | SSA’s account record shows a payment, but questions about the amount or reason may still need an explanation. | Review notices and contact SSA through an official channel if the amount or circumstances remain unclear. |
| An SSA overpayment notice | SSA says it paid more than was due and provides the reason and amount in its notice. | Check the notice against your records and follow its official repayment, appeal, or waiver instructions. |
| An unsolicited demand to transfer or return money | The demand is not proof that the caller represents SSA or that the credit is fraudulent. | Do not transfer funds or use the supplied payment route. Contact your bank and SSA independently. |
Recognize attempts to exploit a confusing deposit
Scammers may use a real deposit, personal details, or uncertainty about a payment to make an urgent story sound credible. Information a caller knows about you or your account does not authenticate them; SSA OIG cautions that scammers use such details to build trust. Watch for these demands:
- A prize or benefit increase in exchange for changing direct deposit. SSA OIG says no legitimate contest or prize requires redirecting a federal benefit payment, and SSA will not increase benefits in exchange for information or a fee. See Beware of Direct Deposit Offers Tied to Prizes.
- Threats that your Social Security number will be suspended or your bank account seized. A demand to transfer money to protect it is an impersonation tactic, not a safe verification procedure. See Protect Your Social Security Number.
- Pressure to stay on the phone, keep the matter secret, or let the caller coach you through a bank transfer. Hang up. Call your bank using the number on your card or statement, and contact SSA independently if needed. SSA OIG describes this tactic in Don’t Let Anyone Help You Move Your Own Money.
A caller may sound convincing or know personal information. That is not proof of identity. Nor should a caller’s claimed “safe account,” supplied payment link, or purported transfer to an agency substitute for your own independently initiated contact. The safest response to pressure is to stop the conversation and verify separately.
If you have already shared account details or changed direct deposit information at someone’s request, contact your bank promptly through a verified channel. Also contact SSA through its official site or published number to ask about the account change and payment record. Do not let the person who initiated the contact direct your next call or transaction.

If SSA sends an overpayment notice
SSA defines an overpayment as receiving more money than you should have from the agency. Its notice explains the reason and amount and sets out the actions available in your case. An overpayment is a formal SSA matter; an unfamiliar bank credit on its own is not the same thing as an overpayment finding. Review Resolve an overpayment and compare the notice’s dates and amounts with your payment and bank records.
Check the amount and the notice details
Match the period and amount in the notice against the SSA payment history and your bank transaction record. If something does not match, or you believe you are not liable, use the appeal or waiver process described by SSA rather than relying on a caller’s explanation. Keep the notice and records of your official contacts together.
Read the notice itself carefully for the reason SSA gives, the amount it identifies, and the response steps and timing that apply. The notice—not a caller’s summary—should anchor your next action. If you disagree with the amount or liability, do not assume repayment is your only option: SSA lists appeal and waiver options. Use the agency’s stated procedure and keep copies of what you submit.
Repay only through instructions tied to the SSA notice
SSA lists Pay.gov for notices with a Remittance ID, your bank’s online bill-pay service, and telephone help at 1-855-807-8807. Check the current instructions on Repay overpaid benefits and use the method applicable to your notice. Do not pay through gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, a payment app, or a new account specified by an unsolicited caller.
Do not send back an unexplained credit just because someone tells you it was accidental. First ask the bank and SSA to investigate. If SSA has formally issued an overpayment notice, use the repayment instructions connected to that notice and verify that the method matches SSA’s official guidance. That distinction helps avoid sending money to an impostor while still addressing a real agency determination.
SSA says it waits at least 30 days after sending an overpayment notice before collection begins. If you request an appeal or waiver within that period, collection pauses while SSA makes a decision. Follow the timing and submission instructions on the notice and the agency’s official guidance; do not delay because a caller promises to resolve it for you.

Report suspected fraud and preserve useful records
Report suspected fraud involving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to the SSA Office of the Inspector General using its official reporting route. SSA explains how to report suspected program fraud at How do I report fraud in the Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicare programs?
If someone is coaching you to make a transfer, end the call and contact the bank using the number on your card or statement. If you have already transferred money or shared information, promptly tell the bank what happened and ask what it recommends. Contact SSA independently if benefit or direct-deposit information may have been changed. Report suspected Social Security or SSI fraud to SSA OIG; do not rely on the person who contacted you to file a report on your behalf.
When speaking with the bank or SSA, have the payment date, amount, bank transaction identifier, relevant SSA notice, and a record of your earlier official calls available. Share only what the verified representative needs. Do not put your Social Security number, complete account number, or screenshots containing sensitive details into public posts or messages to an unsolicited contact.
What a past direct-deposit audit can—and cannot—tell you
A 2025 SSA OIG audit provides a reason to take unauthorized direct-deposit changes seriously, but it does not estimate the chance that any particular unexpected credit is fraudulent. The OIG identified 3,109 beneficiaries who reported not receiving benefits after direct-deposit changes initiated by SSA’s 800-number staff during October–December 2023. It estimated that approximately 1,197 beneficiaries (38.5 percent) had payments misdirected, totaling $2.2 million; about $2 million of that amount was estimated to remain unrecovered as of April 2025. Those figures concern that specific historical audit, not arbitrary deposits or current fraud rates. The OIG’s findings are in SSA Beneficiaries Did Not Always Authorize Direct Deposit Changes by Telephone Leading to Direct Deposit Diversions.
The practical takeaway is narrow: pay attention to direct-deposit changes you did not authorize and report them through official channels. The audit does not tell you whether your particular credit is genuine, why it was issued, or whether you are entitled to keep it. Your own SSA payment record, bank transaction details, and any formal notice are what matter for your case.

Keep the inquiry anchored to records, not the label
There is no reliable way to determine the source, eligibility basis, or legitimacy of a specific deposit from its description alone. A bank record and SSA payment record, checked through independently reached official channels, are the useful evidence. If the records do not agree, do not guess or move the money at another person’s direction; ask the bank and SSA to investigate and follow any formal SSA notice that arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether an unexpected Social Security deposit is real?
Check the payment information in your personal my Social Security account, then ask your bank whether the credit is pending or settled and what origin and transaction details it can see. If it remains unexplained, contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or through an office reached from SSA.gov. A deposit description alone does not establish the source or whether you may keep the money.
Why did I get an extra Social Security payment?
The amount alone cannot establish why a payment arrived. Compare the bank transaction with the SSA payment record and look for notices or account changes. Ask SSA to explain any mismatch through an independently verified contact route; do not rely on an unsolicited caller’s explanation.
What should I do if I received a Social Security payment I wasn’t expecting?
Do not spend, return, or move it at someone’s direction. Check your SSA account, ask your bank about the transaction, and contact SSA directly if the records do not explain it. If SSA sends an overpayment notice, follow that notice’s official repayment, appeal, or waiver instructions.
Should I return an unexpected deposit if someone calls and says it was sent by mistake?
Not through a route supplied by the caller. Contact your bank and SSA independently and ask them to investigate. If SSA issues an overpayment notice, use the repayment method applicable to that notice, such as Pay.gov when it includes a Remittance ID, bank online bill pay, or SSA’s listed telephone help.
How do I report a Social Security or SSI payment scam?
Report suspected Social Security or SSI fraud to the SSA Office of the Inspector General using its official reporting route. If a caller is coaching a transfer, hang up and call your bank using the number on your card or statement.
The Bottom Line
Verify an unexpected Social Security deposit with both your bank and SSA, using contact details you find independently. Do not trust a label, caller ID, or demand to move money. An unexplained credit is not by itself proof of a new benefit or an overpayment; follow official SSA notice procedures if a notice arrives.
