Verify the media and the claim as two separate questions, then combine source checks, reverse searches, geolocation, chronology, and independent corroboration. The result should be a documented assessment that says what is established, what is only plausible, and what remains unknown.
This method works for a video, photograph, screenshot, livestream excerpt, or repost. It does not require specialist forensic hardware, and no single search engine or visual clue can prove authenticity on its own.

Start by separating the media from the claim
Write down the exact assertion before investigating. “This video shows fighting in City X on Tuesday” contains at least three testable propositions: the file depicts the stated scene, the scene is in City X, and the recording was made on Tuesday. It may also imply that the event shown is the incident named in the caption.
A real recording can be paired with a fabricated caption. Conversely, a genuine account can share a mislabeled repost without knowing its history. Treat the following as separate evidence tracks:

- Media identity: Is this the same file, image, or sequence being discussed, rather than an edited excerpt or unrelated look-alike?
- Source and provenance: Who posted it, when, and with what connection to the original capture?
- Place: Do visible features fit the claimed location?
- Time: Does the lighting, weather, season, event order, and publication history fit the claimed date?
- Event: Does independent evidence show that this particular incident occurred in that place and period?
Bellingcat’s conflict-verification guidance gives the essential warning: “Even if the footage is from the area, it doesn’t mean it is from the same event.” A location match is therefore one step, not a verdict.
Preserve the post before it changes
Capture the page as you found it. Save the post URL, account name, displayed caption, platform, visible upload time, replies that identify the footage, and any stated eyewitness or original-source claim. Take screenshots that include the username and timestamp, and record the time zone if the platform displays one.
Download the highest-quality copy that you can lawfully access, without altering the original. Keep a working copy for crops and frame extraction and a read-only original. Note whether the platform has recompressed, resized, watermarked, mirrored, or clipped the media. A repost may have a later platform timestamp even when the underlying file is old.

Assess the account without treating reputation as proof
Examine the account’s creation date, posting history, location claims, language, and relationship to the scene. Does it plausibly have access to the alleged event? Look for a first-person explanation, original files, or links to a known witness. A large following, a blue check, or repetition by many accounts is not independent confirmation; those accounts may all be copying one post.
Record inconsistencies instead of silently resolving them. A caption that changes from “today” to a specific earlier date, a user who deletes the first upload, or a source that cannot explain where the file came from should lower confidence in the attribution, even if the imagery itself appears genuine.
Search for earlier appearances
Earlier publication is often the quickest way to disprove a current-war caption. Search the full image first, then distinctive regions such as a sign, building façade, vehicle, or unusual smoke pattern. For video, create several representative stills from different moments rather than relying on one opening frame.

For still images
- Run the complete image through more than one reverse-image service, such as Google Images, Bing Images, Yandex, and TinEye.
- Crop out borders, captions, platform controls, and logos, then search the most distinctive visual area.
- Try a horizontal flip if the image may have been mirrored, and search both the original and the flip.
- Open promising results and compare the actual pixels, not just similar thumbnails. Check publication dates, captions, and whether the result is another repost.
- Save the earliest credible appearance you find, with its URL, date, and context.
Do not infer that the earliest indexed page is the original capture. It may itself be a repost, and search indexes omit material. A negative result means only that no matching indexed result was found in that service at that time.
For videos
Pause at landmarks, signs, explosions, distinctive clothing, vehicle markings, and transitions. Capture keyframes before and after major cuts. A keyframe-extraction tool can automate this; the European External Action Service’s November 2024 OSINT guidelines discuss InVID-WeVerify for that purpose. Amnesty International’s YouTube DataViewer can generate thumbnails for YouTube videos, while Bellingcat’s video guides describe searching screenshots or thumbnails individually.
Search multiple frames because one may be heavily compressed or visually generic. Search a frame both uncropped and cropped. Compare the sequence, not merely one still: a matching frame from an old upload may reveal that the current post has removed the original audio, changed the order, or inserted a new introduction.
Understand why reverse search misses copies
- Services index different parts of the web and have different coverage.
- Cropping, mirroring, color changes, sharpening, zooming, subtitles, and recompression can defeat a match.
- Private, deleted, newly uploaded, or unindexed pages may never appear.
- A visually similar result may be a different incident in the same location.
Reverse search supplies leads and chronology clues; it does not authenticate a file or establish who recorded it.
Geolocate the scene from several independent features
List everything that might identify the place before opening a map: street signs, script and spelling, road markings, junction geometry, building shapes, minarets or towers, utility poles, mountains, shoreline, vegetation, storefronts, barriers, and the direction of shadows. Separate stable features from temporary ones. A parked car or fresh poster is less reliable than a road layout or bridge.

- Transcribe visible text. Record every letter, number, abbreviation, and language. Search alternative transliterations and likely spelling variants.
- Sketch the geometry. Note the camera’s direction, lane arrangement, bends, intersections, building setbacks, and the position of prominent objects.
- Find candidate references. Compare satellite maps, map photographs, street-level imagery, geotagged photographs, and local news images where available.
- Test several features. Require more than one independent match: for example, a sign position plus a road curve plus a distinctive roofline.
- Check the camera path. In a moving clip, verify that successive views could occur along the same road rather than stitching together unrelated places.
Do not turn a plausible landmark match into an event claim. A street can host many incidents, and old footage from the same neighborhood can be reused for a new escalation.

Test the date and event separately
Search the post’s history and the earliest discoverable upload, but label that date accurately: it is the earliest date you located, not automatically the recording date. A video may be uploaded years after capture, reposted from a deleted account, or scheduled for publication.
Use time-sensitive scene clues
- Weather: Compare cloud cover, rain, dust, snow, and visibility with independent weather records or contemporaneous reporting.
- Lighting: Estimate whether shadows and artificial lights fit the claimed time of day. Treat estimates as approximate, especially with edited footage.
- Season: Check foliage, harvest conditions, clothing, and daylight length.
- Construction and signage: Buildings, roadworks, flags, and advertisements can establish that footage predates or postdates an event.
- Event order: Compare visible explosions, sirens, evacuations, or damage with a timeline from independent reports.
These clues are cross-checks, not clocks. A cloudy day can resemble another cloudy day, and videos may be edited or recorded in a different time zone.
Corroborate the specific incident
Seek sources that independently support the event, not merely sources repeating the same caption. Useful corroboration can include contemporaneous reporting from unrelated outlets, official notices, satellite imagery showing newly visible damage, eyewitness accounts with identifiable locations, other recordings from different angles, or emergency-service records.

Check whether supposedly independent posts trace back to one original account. Compare upload times, identical wording, watermarks, compression artifacts, and cropped borders. Ten copies of one claim are one provenance chain, not ten confirmations.
When sources disagree, preserve the disagreement. Explain which part each source supports: one may establish that an explosion occurred in the city, while another places this particular camera view on a different date.
Use each tool for the question it can answer

Keep an evidence log that another person can audit
Use a simple table or note with one row per observation. Include the source URL, access date and time, screenshot filename, search engine and query, frame number, and the conclusion supported. Distinguish direct observation (“a blue street sign is visible”) from interpretation (“the sign resembles one in District Y”).

Suggested confidence labels
- Verified: Multiple independent, specific checks agree, and the evidence directly supports the narrow statement being made.
- Strongly supported: Several checks fit, but a key element such as the exact recording date remains unconfirmed.
- Plausible: The scene or source fits, but alternatives remain realistic.
- Unverified: Evidence is insufficient or contradictory.
- False attribution: Reliable earlier context or a clear mismatch shows that the attached claim is wrong, while the underlying media may still be genuine.
State the scope of every conclusion. “The location is consistent with the north entrance of the facility” is more defensible than “the video is authentic.” If you cannot establish the date, say so explicitly.
Common traps and how to recover
Trap: trusting the first result
Search rankings reflect relevance and popularity, not truth. Open the result, inspect its date and context, and continue looking for earlier or independent appearances.
Trap: treating metadata as decisive
Platform downloads often strip camera metadata, and metadata can be edited. Use any remaining file information as a clue, then test it against visible evidence and publication history.
Trap: assuming clear imagery is original
High resolution can come from an edited or enhanced repost. Watermarks, subtitles, and sharpened edges may indicate processing rather than provenance.
Trap: mistaking a location match for an incident match
Return to the event question. Compare damage, weather, crowd movement, and the timing of reported incidents. A familiar skyline is not a timestamp.

Trap: overinterpreting audio
Audio can be dubbed, delayed, or taken from another clip. Check whether lip movement, echoes, sirens, and visible actions align; treat an audio match as supporting evidence only.

Trap: exposing people while investigating
Conflict footage may show victims, minors, or identifiable civilians. Avoid unnecessary redistribution, blur sensitive faces when publishing, and do not reveal private location data that could endanger someone.
A compact verification worksheet
- Copy the exact claim and identify its asserted place, date, event, and source.
- Save the post, account details, timestamp, and an unaltered working copy.
- Extract several distinctive stills from the video or crop the image’s identifying features.
- Run those images through more than one reverse-search service and record earlier contexts.
- List visible landmarks and test the location against multiple independent references.
- Compare weather, lighting, season, construction, and event order with time-specific records.
- Trace reposts back to their earliest discoverable source and check whether accounts are independent.
- Seek corroboration for the exact incident, not merely the general conflict.
- Write what is verified, what is probable, what is contradicted, and what remains unknown.
- Preserve your links, screenshots, queries, frame numbers, and reasoning so the assessment can be reviewed.
What a responsible conclusion sounds like
A useful report is narrow and transparent: “The clip matches the road junction shown in reference imagery, and an earlier upload places the same sequence online before the claimed date. Independent reporting confirms fighting in that district during the week, but no evidence links this camera angle to the named incident. The location is strongly supported; the date and event attribution remain unverified.”
That wording is more informative than a binary “real” or “fake.” It separates the parts of the claim that evidence can support and prevents a genuine image from laundering a false narrative.
Source guides and their limits
The procedures above draw on practical guidance from Bellingcat, including its conflict-focused article published October 26, 2023, its beginner verification guide published November 1, 2021, and its advanced video guide published June 30, 2017. The European External Action Service’s November 2024 OSINT guidelines discuss keyframe extraction with InVID-WeVerify. Bellingcat and the Global Legal Action Network’s December 2022 Collection Protocol offers an example of documenting sources and methods; it is not a universal legal or evidentiary standard.
Interfaces and tool availability change, and none of these guides claims that one service is comprehensive or infallible. Apply the method, preserve your work, and report uncertainty rather than manufacturing precision.
