To verify an NFT, identify its network, contract address, and token ID, then read the token’s ownership record and metadata pointer from that contract. The owner query can show the address the contract currently records as holding a token; metadata usually lives off-chain and must be fetched separately. These checks establish blockchain records and referenced content—not a wallet holder’s real-world identity, copyright, or the authenticity of a related physical item.
What you need to identify the NFT
Start with the network, contract address, and token ID. A collection name, symbol, or marketplace image is not enough: names and symbols can be reused, and an image does not identify the contract that issued a token. ERC-721 describes a contract address and token ID together as the fully qualified identifier for a token on an Ethereum chain. ERC-721
- Network: the chain on which the contract is deployed. The same address on another chain may refer to a different contract.
- Contract address: the full address of the token contract, not a marketplace account or collection label.
- Token ID: the identifier used by that contract for the particular token.
Obtain those details from a source you trust, then cross-check that the address and network resolve to the contract you intend to inspect. A block explorer can provide a convenient interface, but the relevant evidence comes from reading the contract on the correct network.
Check the recorded holder for the token standard
| Standard | Ownership check | Metadata pointer | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ERC-721 | Call ownerOf(tokenId) on the identified contract and network. |
Call tokenURI(tokenId), if the contract implements the optional metadata extension. |
The returned address is the contract’s current owner record. A token may have been destroyed, and the metadata interface is optional. ERC-721 |
| ERC-1155 | Read the account’s balance for the token ID. The standard does not define a universal ownerOf function; a token ID can have quantities held by multiple accounts. |
Call uri(id). |
The URI must not be treated as proof the token exists. ownerOf is available only if an applicable extension, such as ERC-5409, is implemented. ERC-1155 ERC-5409 |
ERC-721: read ownerOf
Query ownerOf(tokenId) against the contract on the identified network. The returned address is the contract’s current recorded holder for that token. It does not tell you who controls the wallet in real life. If the query is unavailable or reverts, do not infer an owner from a marketplace page; ERC-721 notes that a token may be destroyed, and the outcome depends on the contract’s behavior. ERC-721

ERC-1155: check balances, not an assumed owner function
ERC-1155 uses balances and transfers rather than a universal single-owner query. Check the balance for the token ID and account you care about. Some implementations may support the optional ownerOf extension for NFTs, but its presence and semantics must be verified for that specific contract; do not assume it is part of ERC-1155 itself. ERC-1155 ERC-5409
Retrieve and inspect the metadata
- Read the pointer from the contract. For ERC-721, call
tokenURI(tokenId); for ERC-1155, calluri(id). ERC-721’s metadata extension is optional, so a missingtokenURIdoes not by itself invalidate the ownership record. ERC-721 ERC-1155 - Apply ERC-1155 ID substitution if needed. If the returned URI contains
{id}, replace it with the token ID in lowercase hexadecimal, without a0xprefix, left-padded to 64 characters. ERC-1155 says the URI must not be used to determine whether a token exists. ERC-1155 - Fetch the resulting metadata document. Inspect the actual JSON response, including fields such as
name, description, image, and project-specific attributes. A URI is a pointer to retrieve; it is not itself the metadata contents. - Resolve media separately. If the JSON contains an image URI, retrieve that resource too. IPFS documents this sequence: call the token URI function, fetch its JSON, then resolve the image referenced in the JSON. IPFS: Best practices for NFT data
Marketplace traits and images may come from cached or indexed data. If a detail matters, compare the marketplace display with the contract-returned URI and the JSON and media retrieved from it. A successful response only shows that content was retrieved at that time; it does not establish that it is the same content a marketplace displayed earlier.

Assess whether the metadata can change
Finding a URI does not establish that the metadata is permanent. ERC-721 explicitly allows a token URI to be mutable. Ask whether the contract can change the URI it returns, and whether that URI points to a mutable HTTP location or to content addressed by an IPFS CID. ERC-721
An IPFS CID identifies content rather than a particular gateway address. That helps check whether retrieved content matches the content identified by the CID, but it does not guarantee that the content will remain available or prevent the contract from changing the URI it returns. What these checks do—and do not—prove
- They can establish the contract’s recorded holder or balances on a particular network, and the metadata pointer the contract returns when queried.
- They do not identify a person behind an address or prove that the person presenting it controls the wallet.
- They do not establish copyright, authenticity of a physical object, or ownership of an external asset. A token’s ownership record does not adjudicate rights connected to what it represents. ERC-721
- They do not, by themselves, establish metadata accuracy or permanence. A URI does not prove who authored the referenced data, whether it is immutable, or whether it will remain available.
