How to Verify a Loan Rebrand Notice Before Sharing Personal Information

Before sharing account or identity information, verify a loan rebrand notice through a recent statement or a trusted lender or servicer channel—not through the message itself.

If a loan notice says your lender, servicer, or loan company has a new name, do not click its links or share personal or bank details until you confirm the change independently. Use the phone number on a recent statement or an account channel you already trust, then ask what changed, when it takes effect, and whether you need to do anything.

Start with an independent check

  1. Pause. Do not reply, click a link, upload identity documents, confirm bank details, or make a payment through the notice while it is unverified. An urgent deadline is not proof that the message is genuine. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns people not to respond to suspicious bank or credit-union messages or click their links; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gives similar advice about unexpected loan texts. CFPB guidance on suspicious account-verification messages; FTC guidance on fake loan texts.
  2. Work out what the notice claims changed. Is it only a new brand or company name, a new owner of the loan, or a new company collecting payments? Those are different events and can have different notice expectations.
  3. Find a trusted contact route without using the notice. For a mortgage, check a recent statement or sign in through an account channel you have used before. For a bank or credit union, use a number from a statement, card, or its established website—not a number or link in the message. The CFPB specifically recommends using a phone number obtained from a different source than a suspicious email or text. CFPB account-verification guidance; CFPB mortgage-servicing guidance.
  4. Ask the institution directly. Ask whether the name, ownership, servicing arrangement, account access, or payment instructions changed; the effective date; what action, if any, is required; and whether the contact details in the notice are correct.
  5. Compare its answer with the notice and your records. Confirm dates and payment instructions before changing where you pay or how you access the account. If the institution cannot confirm the claim, do not provide information through the notice.
  6. Share only what the verified institution says it needs, through its established channel. Keep the notice and a note of the contact method, date, and answer you received.

“Never respond or click on links as they can take you to scammers’ malicious websites or give them access to your device,” the CFPB says in guidance last reviewed April 15, 2024. Read the CFPB guidance.

Identify what kind of change the notice describes

Situation What may change What to check
Brand or name change The company’s public-facing name may change without a change to who owns or services the loan. There is no universal notice format or deadline established for every branding-only change. Ask your known lender or servicer what changed and whether account access or payment instructions are affected.
Mortgage servicing transfer The company that handles payments may change; the loan owner may or may not change. Check the transfer dates, incoming servicer’s name and contact information, and payment-transition instructions. CFPB says the old servicer generally sends notice at least 15 days before transfer and the new servicer generally sends notice within 15 days after, unless notices are combined. CFPB mortgage-servicing guidance.
Mortgage ownership transfer The loan may be sold while the same servicer continues to collect payments. CFPB says the new owner must notify the borrower within 30 days after the transfer’s effective date, including the transfer date and new owner’s name, address, and phone number. A sale by itself does not change the loan agreement’s terms. CFPB guidance on mortgage sales.
Debt collector contact A company may claim it is collecting an overdue debt, rather than managing a rebrand or servicing transition. Ask for the company’s identity, mailing address, and information about the debt. Verify the claim before sharing financial information; CFPB suggests checking with state regulators or the state attorney general. CFPB debt-collector guidance.
Student loan servicing contact A student loan may have a servicing change, or a message may falsely claim affiliation with a servicer or the Department of Education. Contact your current servicer through a known channel. Treat requests for Federal Student Aid information, upfront-fee pressure, promises to reduce or eliminate debt, and claims of government or servicer affiliation as warning signs. CFPB student-loan guidance.

What mortgage borrowers should know about transfer notices

CFPB guidance says a mortgage’s servicer can change. A sale of the mortgage does not automatically change the servicer, and a sale does not by itself change the loan terms. Servicing changes; Mortgage sales.

For a servicing transfer, compare the notice’s dates and incoming servicer details with what your existing servicer confirms. CFPB says that for 60 days after the transfer, the new servicer cannot charge a late fee or treat a payment as late when the borrower sent it to the old servicer on time or within the applicable grace period. This protection concerns the specified mortgage payment transition; it is not a general rule for every kind of loan or every rebrand. If a transfer notice is missing or a payment problem arises, CFPB says borrowers may contact both the old and new servicers. CFPB mortgage-servicing guidance.

Warning signs that call for extra caution

  • The sender asks you to verify account information through a message link, or directs you to call a number included only in the message.
  • The notice pressures you to act immediately, pay an unexpected fee, or provide bank or identity details before the company’s identity is confirmed.
  • The purported company cannot be verified through your known lender, servicer, or official account channel, or its explanation conflicts with your records.
  • A debt collector will not identify its company and mailing address or provide information about the claimed debt.
  • A student-loan message requests Federal Student Aid information, demands an upfront fee, promises to eliminate debt, or claims government or servicer affiliation that your current servicer cannot confirm.

A familiar logo or a polished notice does not independently establish that the sender is legitimate. Verify the change with the institution you already know.

If the message does not check out

Do not continue through the message’s link, reply address, or callback number. Contact the known lender or servicer using an established route, explain what you received, and ask whether it is genuine. If the sender cannot be verified or the notice appears fraudulent, report the suspicious message to the relevant agency. The FTC advises people not to respond to or click links in unexpected loan texts and provides a route to report them. FTC fake-loan-text guidance.
