To verify a Bitcoin payment, search its full transaction ID (txid) in a Bitcoin block explorer, then check that the transaction’s inputs and outputs match the payment details and whether it is pending or confirmed. For a large payment, treat the explorer as a view of public transaction data—not proof of who owns an address or a guarantee that a payment cannot be reversed.
What you need before looking it up
Ask the sender for the transaction ID, or find it in the sender’s wallet history. A txid is the lookup key for a specific Bitcoin transaction. Make sure you have the complete identifier: a shortened display or a typo can lead to a failed lookup or the wrong result.

Verify the transaction step by step
- Open the explorer and search the full txid. The result should be a transaction page with public on-chain details. If no transaction appears, check the txid character by character and ask the sender to confirm it from their wallet. A missing result alone does not establish why the transaction is absent.
- Match the transaction to the payment. Compare its displayed inputs and outputs with the payment information you have. Transactions can contain multiple inputs and outputs, and an output may send change back to the sender. Do not assume every output is a separate payment to a recipient.
- Read the status. An unconfirmed transaction is pending in the mempool view. Once miners include it in a block, it has its first confirmation; each later block adds another confirmation. The count is a useful measure of confirmation depth, not a promise of absolute irreversibility.
- Review fees if the transaction is pending. The total fee and fee rate can help explain how it may fare against competing transactions. Fee-market demand changes, and a lower fee relative to current demand may mean a longer wait. An explorer cannot guarantee when a miner will include a transaction.
What the transaction page can—and cannot—verify
What it can show
- Whether a transaction with the searched txid is visible to that explorer.
- Whether it is shown as unconfirmed or included in a block, and its displayed confirmation count.
- The transaction’s public inputs, outputs, and fee information.
What it cannot establish
- The real-world identity of the people or organizations behind the addresses.
- That a named recipient controls a particular address, or that an address belongs to the person who says it does.
- That a pending transaction will confirm by a particular time, or that a confirmed payment is absolutely irreversible.
These limits matter especially for a large payment: an explorer can help you check on-chain details, but it cannot authenticate the parties or guarantee settlement. If the transaction is still pending
Contact the sender before attempting any change. If the sender’s wallet supports Replace-by-Fee (RBF), the sender may be able to create a replacement transaction with a higher fee. When to check another source
A second explorer or a Bitcoin node you operate can provide another view of public transaction data. These are verification options, not a ranking of providers: the cited documentation does not establish comparative privacy or reliability scores for explorers. Keep in mind that searching a third-party website involves sending it the txid you enter, so consider whether that disclosure is acceptable for your situation.

Running your own node is more technical. Bitcoin Core’s REST interface documentation describes transaction lookup behavior that can depend on the transaction being in the mempool; retrieving confirmed transactions can require enabling a transaction index. How many confirmations are enough?
There is no universal confirmation count that guarantees a large payment is safe for every recipient or situation. A service may set its own acceptance policy, and a commonly cited threshold should be treated as that policy or convention—not as proof of absolute finality. For a significant payment, check the recipient’s stated requirements and make your decision with the transaction’s confirmation depth in view.
