You can move bitcoin safely from an old wallet if you can either make a transaction from it or restore it using the correct recovery material. First identify whether the wallet is self-custody or held by a service. Then choose the matching route: send bitcoin from a wallet you can still use, or restore the old wallet with its documented recovery method. Never share a recovery phrase or private key, and verify the destination address before sending; an on-chain transfer generally cannot be reversed.
First, identify who controls the wallet
A phone or computer does not hold bitcoin by itself: control comes from the private keys. With a self-custody wallet, you or your wallet software control those keys, and you are responsible for protecting the recovery phrase or backup. With an exchange or other custodian, the service controls the keys; use its account-security and withdrawal process rather than trying to restore the service account in wallet software. Bitcoin.org explains the trade-off between self-custody and relying on a provider.

Keep recovery phrases, private keys, and unencrypted wallet backups secret. Anyone who obtains the relevant secret may be able to spend the bitcoin. Bitcoin.org warns that no legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask for a seed phrase or private key. Do not paste one into a website, send it to support, or post it in a forum.

| Situation | What to do | Main considerations |
|---|---|---|
| The old self-custody wallet opens and can send | Create a receive address in the destination wallet, verify compatibility and the full address, then send an optional test transaction before the remainder. | The source wallet must be able to sign the transaction and have enough bitcoin to cover its network fee. |
| The old wallet will not open, but you have its recovery material | Restore only with compatible wallet software and the original wallet’s documented settings. | Wallet format, derivation settings, address type, extra passphrase, or multisignature setup may matter; entering a phrase into an untrusted recovery site risks theft. |
| The wallet is a custodial account | Secure the account and use the provider’s withdrawal flow to send to a wallet you control. | The provider controls the keys, so its supported procedures and account access govern the withdrawal. |
| The inaccessible self-custody wallet’s required secrets are lost | There may be no way to restore access. | Do not trust a recovery service that asks for the phrase or private key. |
If the old wallet still opens, send to a new address
- Prepare the destination wallet. Install or open it using its verified official source, then use its receive function to create a bitcoin address. Check that it can receive from the old wallet’s address or script type. Wallet support varies, and older wallets may use legacy addresses; consult the destination wallet’s current documentation or chooser information at Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser.
- Verify the destination. Compare the entire address, not only the first and last characters. A QR code or another trusted transfer method can reduce typing errors, but visually confirm the complete address wherever the wallet permits. Do not blindly reuse an address found in old transaction history: address-poisoning scams can place lookalike addresses there. See Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance.
- Decide whether to make a test transfer. If practical, send a small amount first. Wait until the transaction appears in the destination wallet and reaches the confirmation level you consider appropriate, then send the remainder. A test adds another transaction and may incur another fee; it is an extra check, not a guarantee, and does not replace address and compatibility checks.
- Send the remainder and retain the source fee. Leave enough bitcoin in the old wallet to pay the network fee for each transaction. Review the destination address and fee shown by the wallet before authorizing the transfer.
If the old wallet will not open, restore it carefully
Look for the original recovery phrase, an encrypted wallet backup, the hardware device, or other recovery material described by that wallet’s maker. Use only the official instructions for the destination wallet and confirm it supports the original wallet type and configuration. Compatibility can depend on derivation settings, address type, an additional passphrase, or a multisignature arrangement; a phrase is not guaranteed to restore identically in every wallet.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If a restored wallet appears empty, stop before trying random settings or entering the phrase into a recovery website. The account path, passphrase, or wallet configuration may be wrong. Consult the wallet maker’s official documentation or support channel without disclosing the phrase or private keys. A wallet password and recovery phrase are different things: an encrypted backup may require its password, while a recovery phrase is key material. Bitcoin.org discusses wallet backups, encryption, and security; product-specific restoration steps depend on the wallet.
Bitcoin.org says that most modern wallets are deterministic, so one recovery-phrase backup can restore past and future addresses. That general description does not eliminate wallet compatibility requirements or apply automatically to every setup, particularly configurations involving extra passphrases or multisignature keys. If the necessary keys or phrase for an inaccessible self-custody wallet are permanently lost, recovery may be impossible: Bitcoin.org states that funds are permanently gone when access is permanently lost.

Understand fees and confirmation before sending
Bitcoin transaction fees reflect transaction data size and demand for limited block space, not simply the amount being transferred. Bitcoin.org summarizes it this way: “You pay for the size of your transaction in the block, not for the amount of bitcoin you send.” Fees are often quoted in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). As an illustration rather than a fee quote, Bitcoin.org gives approximately 140 virtual bytes for a simple transaction with one input and two outputs; transactions with more inputs or outputs can be larger. One bitcoin is 100,000,000 satoshis. See Bitcoin.org’s fee explainer for current guidance.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck the wallet’s live fee estimate and controls. A lower fee can mean a longer wait, and some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF). Bitcoin.org says, “If your payment is not urgent, choosing a lower fee and waiting is a perfectly good strategy.” Blocks are added roughly every 10 minutes on average, not on a guaranteed schedule, so that average is not a promise that your transaction will confirm within a particular time. If a transaction remains unconfirmed, follow the wallet’s documented status and replacement process rather than improvising; an unconfirmed transaction may confirm later or be dropped, but the wallet’s handling determines what you should do next.

Protect the wallet and your privacy after the move
- Keep backups protected from theft, fire, water, and accidental loss. Bitcoin.org recommends secure locations and durable physical storage; follow the specific wallet’s backup instructions and avoid leaving a single vulnerable copy.
- Do not photograph or upload a recovery phrase, and do not enter it into an unfamiliar app or website. A hardware wallet or durable physical backup medium can be an optional improvement for future storage, but buying a device cannot recover secrets that are already lost.
- Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent. Moving funds between wallets does not make their history anonymous, and combining funds can affect privacy.
- If the old wallet is encrypted, preserve any required password separately and securely. Bitcoin.org warns that forgotten wallet passwords may have very limited recovery options.
