If they cannot split the payment, choose something whose full total—including tax—fits the balance. A prepaid gift card will not necessarily pay part of a larger purchase automatically.
How do I use up the last few dollars on a prepaid gift card?
- Check the available balance. Use the balance website, app, or phone number shown on the card. Visa advises cardholders to contact the issuing financial institution for balance information: Visa Gift Cards.
- Ask about split payment before the cashier runs the transaction. Tell them the amount available and ask whether they can charge that specific amount to the prepaid card, then accept another payment method for the difference.
- If split payment is unavailable, keep the total within the balance. Pick a purchase whose complete total, including taxes, is no more than the available balance. Do not assume the terminal will automatically charge only what remains on the card and bill the rest another way.
When can a split payment work?
Visa says a merchant may let a customer pay part of a purchase with a gift card and the rest with credit, debit, cash, or another accepted method. That is an option, not a guarantee: the merchant’s policy and checkout system determine whether it can complete the split. Ask first and specify how much to charge to the card. Visa also describes Partial Authorization, which can approve a prepaid-card transaction for less than the full sales amount at participating issuers and merchants. The unpaid remainder still needs to be covered through split-tender functionality; partial authorization alone does not settle the whole purchase. Availability depends on the issuer and merchant. Which approach is more practical?

Why can online or certain in-person purchases be tricky?
Online checkout
Some internet merchants’ fraud-protection systems may decline gift-card purchases. Split tender is also less dependable online: Walmart’s card agreement says internet and most mail-order merchants do not permit it. That is Walmart’s stated policy, not a rule for every retailer. Check the specific merchant’s checkout options and the card agreement before relying on an online split. Visa’s guidance; Visa’s merchant guidance.

Gas pumps
A pump may authorize more than the eventual fuel purchase, which can cause a decline when the balance is small. Visa recommends paying a gas-station attendant rather than at the pump to avoid a possible authorization decline. Visa’s merchant guidance.
Restaurants and hotels
A restaurant or hotel may authorize an amount that accounts for an automatic tip of up to 20%. If that authorization exceeds the card balance, the transaction can be declined even if the final amount would have been lower. Visa’s merchant guidance.

What if a purchase is declined or the balance looks lower afterward?
Check the card’s transaction status with the issuer. An authorized purchase that was not completed can leave funds temporarily unavailable while an authorization hold remains; the timing varies by card and transaction, so ask the issuer about the status rather than assuming a particular release date. Card terms and procedures differ, and a Visa gift card, a store gift card, and a reloadable prepaid card may not follow the same rules.
