Walmart Pay itself does not connect directly to your PayPal balance: it uses the Walmart app’s QR-code checkout and supported saved cards or Walmart gift cards.
Can you pay with PayPal at a Walmart register?
Not by selecting a PayPal account or scanning a PayPal QR code through Walmart Pay. Walmart’s general payment-methods page lists PayPal, but it does not clarify that this applies to in-store checkout. It is not evidence that PayPal account checkout is available at a register.
The established in-store route for spending your PayPal balance is to use the PayPal Debit Mastercard as a debit card. Walmart lists debit cards among accepted payment methods, and PayPal says its U.S. Debit Mastercard draws on PayPal Balance and works wherever Mastercard is accepted.
Ways to use PayPal funds in-store
Pay with the physical PayPal Debit Mastercard
At checkout, use the card as you would another debit card: insert or swipe it, or follow the terminal’s prompts. PayPal says the card must have available funds in your PayPal balance. If you need a physical card, PayPal says you can request one in its app with no fee to request it. See PayPal’s Debit Mastercard guidance for card details.

Tap with a mobile wallet where Walmart Tap to Pay is available
PayPal says eligible PayPal cards can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. Select the PayPal card in the wallet, then tap your phone or watch at a Walmart terminal that supports Tap to Pay. Walmart’s rollout began at select U.S. Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on August 24, 2026; the company says it plans to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, with fuel stations planned by mid-2027. Those are rollout targets, not a guarantee that the feature is available at every location now. Check the store or look for a contactless-payment prompt at the terminal. PayPal’s instructions for adding cards to mobile wallets are available in its wallet help article. Wallet and card eligibility still apply.

Use Walmart Pay with a different supported funding source
If you want to use Walmart Pay, choose a supported debit card, credit card, or Walmart gift card in the Walmart app. That is a separate payment method; it does not make your PayPal balance a Walmart Pay funding option.

Walmart Pay is an app-based QR checkout. Walmart’s instructions are to sign in to the Walmart app, select or add a supported payment method, then scan the QR code displayed at the register after your items are scanned. The app shows a transaction confirmation, and the receipt is saved electronically. Walmart says Walmart Pay requires a Walmart.com account; its terms also note that data-service charges may apply. Walmart Pay does not use near-field communication (NFC). Tap to Pay is the separate contactless option: it accepts supported cards or digital wallets at locations where Walmart has enabled it. So adding a PayPal card to a wallet does not turn Walmart Pay’s QR scanner into a PayPal or wallet checkout.

If the payment does not work
- The PayPal card is declined: Check that the card is active and that your PayPal balance has available funds, as PayPal requires funds in the balance for the debit card.
- Your phone or watch cannot tap: The specific location may not yet have Tap to Pay. Use the physical card or another accepted payment method instead.
- You are in Walmart Pay and cannot find PayPal: Walmart Pay uses its supported saved cards and gift cards, not direct PayPal account checkout. Use the PayPal Debit Mastercard separately if you want to pay from PayPal Balance.
