Apple’s current UK support guidance says Apple Cash is available only in the United States, and sending or receiving money through an Apple Cash account requires you to be at least 18 and a US resident. Apple Pay itself is available in the UK, but it is a way to pay merchants with a supported card—not Apple’s built-in UK equivalent of a person-to-person payment app.
Apple Pay Cash, Apple Cash and Apple Pay: what is the difference?
“Apple Pay Cash” is an older or informal name for Apple Cash. The two services should not be confused with Apple Pay.
| Feature | Apple Pay | Apple Cash |
|---|---|---|
| UK availability | Available with supported cards and participating issuers | Not available to UK residents |
| Main purpose | Paying shops, apps, websites and some transport systems | Sending, receiving and holding money |
| Where it works | Contactless terminals and participating online checkouts | Wallet and Messages in supported US use cases |
| What is required? | A compatible Apple device and supported card | Apple Cash eligibility, including US residency |
| UK person-to-person alternative | Not built into Apple Pay | Use a bank transfer or separate payment service |
Apple Cash is a US stored-balance service provided through Green Dot Bank. It can be used through Apple Pay for purchases, but that does not make the account available in the UK. Apple is not itself a bank. See Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy explanation for the distinction.
Why you cannot activate Apple Cash in the UK
Apple’s UK documentation currently identifies Apple Cash as a US-only service. Its eligibility requirement is not simply an iPhone setting or the presence of a compatible debit card: Apple says users sending and receiving money must be at least 18 and US residents.

- No app or device requirement: Share your dot.Profile with anyone, as others don't need an app or a dot.device to receive your information.
- Hassle-free sharing: Easily share your dot.Profile with unlimited free shares of your digital business card.
- Simple sharing process: Tap your dot.device to a compatible phone or scan the dot.Profile QR code to share your profile. Compatible with a wide range of phones.
- Update information on the go: Keep your dot.Profile up to date by easily modifying and updating your information as it changes, ensuring you always have the most accurate details.
- Privacy and security: Protect your information with dot, as no passwords are ever needed to link your social accounts. Dot uses only usernames and links to create your digital business card.
Changing your iPhone region, Apple Account region or App Store country therefore is not a legitimate UK activation method. Nor should you use a VPN, a US billing address or inaccurate residency information to try to satisfy the requirement. A UK debit card cannot be used through Apple’s documented Apple Cash funding route, which specifies supported US debit or prepaid cards.
If you have added a UK card to Wallet, that only enables ordinary Apple Pay where your card issuer participates. It does not create an Apple Cash account or add money-sending features to Messages.
How to use Apple Pay in the UK
Although Apple Cash is unavailable, you can use Apple Pay to make purchases with a supported debit, credit, prepaid or eligible travel card. Apple lists a compatible device, current software, an Apple Account, a supported card and device authentication such as Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode among the requirements. Check Apple’s UK Apple Pay setup guidance for current device and issuer requirements.
Set up Apple Pay on an iPhone
- Open Wallet.
- Tap the Add Card button.
- Choose the type of card and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Complete any verification requested by your bank or card issuer.
Not every UK card is eligible. The issuer—not Apple—decides whether a particular card can be added.

Pay in a shop with an iPhone
- Face ID iPhone: Double-click the side button, authenticate, then hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader.
- Touch ID iPhone: Double-click the Home button, then hold the iPhone near the reader.
- To use another card, tap the default card in Wallet and select a different one before authenticating.
Wait for the tick and “Done” confirmation. The merchant must accept Apple Pay, the relevant card and its payment network; a contactless symbol alone is not an absolute guarantee that the terminal will accept your transaction.
Pay with an Apple Watch
- Double-click the side button.
- Select another card if necessary.
- Hold the Apple Watch display near the contactless reader.
- Wait for the tap or beep confirming payment.
Pay in an app or online
- Select the Apple Pay button or Apple Pay at checkout.
- Check or change the payment card.
- Confirm billing, delivery and contact information if requested.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, a passcode, Apple Watch or Mac Touch ID as appropriate.
Apple Pay can also work on supported public transport systems. Availability depends on the transport operator and its payment setup; see Apple’s public-transport guidance.
If Apple Pay is not working
Your card will not add to Wallet
Check that your device software is current, your device has a passcode, your billing details match the issuer’s records and your bank supports Apple Pay. If the card is unsupported or verification fails, Apple advises contacting the card issuer. Use Apple’s declined-card troubleshooting page rather than treating the problem as an Apple Cash issue.
Apple Pay works in one shop but not another
Acceptance depends on the terminal, merchant, card and payment network. Some contactless terminals may not be configured to accept every card or Apple Pay transaction, so try another payment method or ask the merchant.

You cannot send money in Messages
That is expected for a UK Apple Cash account: Apple Cash person-to-person transfers are not available to UK residents. Adding a UK card to Apple Pay does not activate this feature.

Choose the service based on what you need rather than assuming every option works like Apple Cash.
| Need | Most suitable option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Pay another UK resident | Bank transfer | Usually simplest; the recipient may need to provide sort code and account number. |
| Send a payment link | PayPal or Monzo.me | The recipient generally needs an account or must follow the provider’s payment process. |
| Pay people already in the same app | Monzo or Revolut | App-to-app convenience depends on both users’ accounts and applicable terms. |
| Send money internationally | Wise or Revolut | Fees and exchange rates vary by currency, amount, plan and transfer method. |
Bank transfer
For an ordinary UK payment, a transfer from your banking app is often the most direct substitute. It avoids setting up a separate wallet, although you should check the recipient’s details carefully before confirming.
PayPal
PayPal can suit friends who already use it or recipients who prefer a payment link rather than sharing bank details. PayPal’s UK fee page says domestic personal transactions can have no fee where no currency conversion is involved, while international payments, currency conversion and commercial transactions follow different rules. Check the current PayPal UK fees before sending.

Monzo
Monzo is a stronger fit if you want a UK bank account alongside contact-based payments, UK transfers and Monzo.me links. Monzo says sending money to UK bank accounts and receiving money is free, but international payments and optional paid plans have separate terms. See Monzo’s payments page.
Revolut
Revolut may be useful when both people already use it or when international and multi-currency features matter. Its Standard plan is listed as free, while fees can differ for local, international and card-funded transfers and are shown according to the transaction. Review the Standard-plan fees and bank-transfer information.
Wise
Wise is generally better suited to international transfers, currency conversion and holding multiple currencies than to replacing a basic UK-to-UK bank transfer. Wise says same-currency transfers between Wise contacts are free, but other transfer and conversion fees vary. Check the exact quote on Wise’s UK pricing page.
For personal payments, use a personal-payment route only for a genuine personal transaction. Do not use a friends-and-family option for goods or services when buyer or commercial protections may be relevant.

What if you already have a US Apple Cash account?
A US resident with an existing, valid Apple Cash account may be able to use the Apple Cash card through Apple Pay at some UK merchants. That is different from opening an account as a UK resident. Whether a transaction succeeds can depend on the merchant, card-network acceptance, foreign-transaction treatment and issuer controls.
Being temporarily in the UK does not remove the account’s US eligibility conditions or guarantee that person-to-person Apple Cash features will work as they would at home. Do not treat a US visitor’s experience as evidence that UK residents can activate Apple Cash.
Bottom line
There is no supported way for a UK resident to set up Apple Pay Cash—now generally called Apple Cash. Use Apple Pay for purchases with an eligible UK card, and use a bank transfer, PayPal, Monzo, Revolut or Wise when you need to send money to another person. Apple’s current UK documentation should be treated as the authority if availability changes.
