Add the card as a credit or debit card, not in Amazon’s gift-card-code field. In most cases, its available balance must cover the order’s full final total, including tax and shipping.
Before you add the Visa gift card
Check the card’s terms before trying to use it online. Visa gift cards vary by issuer, so one card may work differently from another.

- Activate the card if the instructions require activation.
- Check the available balance using the website or phone number printed on the card. Use the available balance, not the card’s original face value.
- Check the expiration date. The plastic may expire even though issuer rules may provide a way to access remaining funds.
- Register billing information if the issuer offers or requires registration. Some online merchants require a name, address, or ZIP code associated with the card.
- Confirm geographic restrictions. Some Visa gift cards are valid only for purchases in the United States.

How to add a Visa gift card to Amazon
On the Amazon.com website:
- Sign in to Amazon.com.
- Select Account & Lists.
- Select Your Account.
- Open Your Payments.
- Select Add a payment method.
- Choose Add a credit or debit card.
- Enter the card number, expiration date, and CVV.
- Enter the cardholder name and billing address or ZIP code if Amazon requests them. Use the information registered with the issuer when applicable.
- Select the option to add or save the card.
Amazon documents the payment-management path through Your Payments. Amazon sometimes changes button names or page layouts, so you may see wording such as Add a payment method or Add a credit or debit card.
Do not enter the Visa card number in Gift cards and promotional codes. That field is for Amazon gift-card claim codes and promotional codes. A Visa gift card is a prepaid card running on the Visa network; it is not an Amazon.com gift card.
How to use it at checkout
- Add an eligible item to your cart.
- Proceed to checkout.
- Under Payment method, select the saved Visa gift card.
- Review the final total, including sales tax, shipping, and any other charges.
- Place the order only when the card has enough available balance for the complete authorization.
A card with exactly $25 available may be declined for a $25 item if tax or shipping raises the final total above $25. Leaving a margin is safer, especially if the issuer may place a temporary authorization hold.

What if the card balance is too low?
Do not assume Amazon will charge part of the order to the Visa gift card and the remainder to another bank card. Amazon staff guidance says prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards generally cannot be combined with a credit card on one order. Direct payment split among multiple cards is also generally unreliable.
Amazon gift-card balance is different. Amazon may allow an order to use Amazon gift-card balance first and an accepted credit or debit card for the remainder. That does not mean Amazon will split the order between a Visa gift card and another bank card.
Practical options
- Choose an item whose complete total is comfortably below the Visa gift card’s available balance.
- Use the Visa gift card at a merchant that supports split tender.
- Try to convert an exact amount into Amazon gift-card balance, if the issuer and Amazon approve the transaction.
Amazon staff guidance has described adding a valid prepaid card under payment methods and using it to purchase Amazon gift-card funds. This is a possible workaround, not a guarantee for every Visa gift card, issuer, or account.

Can Amazon Reload convert the card into Amazon balance?
Amazon’s reload-balance flow may allow you to charge an exact amount to the Visa gift card and then use that Amazon balance for a later purchase. However, prepaid-card issuers or Amazon’s transaction controls may reject reloads or gift-card purchases.

- Enter no more than the card’s available balance.
- Leave a small margin if a temporary authorization could reduce the usable balance.
- Try a modest amount rather than repeatedly attempting a large transaction.
- Remember that Amazon balance is less flexible than money on a Visa card and generally cannot be converted back to cash or returned to the Visa card.
Use direct checkout when the Visa card already covers the order. Balance conversion is mainly a conditional workaround for a low balance or several small cards.

- Open the Amazon Shopping app.
- Tap the account or person icon.
- Open Your Account or Payments.
- Select Your Payments.
- Tap Add a payment method.
- Choose Add a credit or debit card.
- Enter the Visa gift-card details and save the card.
- Select it as the payment method during checkout.
If the option is difficult to find, use Amazon.com in a browser and follow the documented Your Payments path.
Why Amazon declined the Visa gift card

| Incorrect details | Recheck the card number, expiration date, CVV, name, and billing address. |
| Prepaid-card restriction | Try a normal physical product. Some prepaid-card transactions, including certain gift-card or digital purchases, may receive additional screening. |
| CVV or issuer-processing problem | Contact the issuer using the number on the card. Some issuer or merchant combinations may not process prepaid-card security data as expected. |
| Temporary authorization | An Amazon staff response has described a possible $1 authorization used to validate a prepaid card. It may temporarily reduce available funds without being a final charge. |
| Account or transaction controls | Stop repeated attempts, verify the card, and contact the issuer before trying again. Amazon’s specific risk rules are not publicly documented. |
If the card has enough money but still fails
- Stop repeatedly retrying the same transaction.
- Check the available balance again through the issuer.
- Confirm activation and online registration.
- Match the Amazon billing ZIP code to the issuer’s registered ZIP code.
- Remove and re-add the card under Your Payments.
- Try a lower-cost physical item with a total comfortably below the balance.
- Try the card at another reputable online merchant to determine whether the problem is specific to Amazon.
- Call the number printed on the card if the transaction continues to fail.
- Contact Amazon customer service if the issuer confirms that the card is active and valid.
Visa directs cardholders who have sufficient funds but whose transaction is declined to contact the card issuer using the number on the card.

You should not count on using multiple Visa gift cards directly on one Amazon order. Amazon’s practical guidance does not generally support splitting one order among multiple payment cards.

A conditional workaround is to add each card separately and, if Amazon and each issuer approve the transactions, use them to purchase separate Amazon gift-card amounts. Redeem the resulting claim codes into one Amazon gift-card balance. This can fail because of issuer rules, Amazon restrictions, fraud screening, or balance limitations.
Subscriptions, Prime, digital goods, and third-party items
Visa gift cards work for many eligible Amazon purchases, but they are a poor choice for recurring charges. Issuer agreements may prohibit preauthorized recurring payments, and services such as Prime, Subscribe & Save, or recurring digital subscriptions may need a payment method that remains valid after the card balance is exhausted or the card expires.
Use a standard debit or credit card for:
- Prime renewals
- Subscribe & Save
- Recurring digital subscriptions
- Orders that may require later authorizations
Digital goods, Amazon gift-card purchases, and some third-party seller transactions may also receive additional restrictions or screening. If you are testing a new card, start with an ordinary physical product rather than a digital item or another gift card.

Returns, cancellations, and refunds
Keep the physical card or the virtual-card details until the order is fully settled and the return period has ended. Visa advises retaining the card because a refund may be sent back to the original Visa gift card.
- A refund normally goes to the original payment method.
- Amazon controls the merchant refund timing.
- If the card has expired, ask the issuer about its replacement or alternate-refund procedure.
- Do not discard the card simply because its balance has reached zero if a return or adjustment remains possible.
Visa gift card, Amazon gift card, Amazon balance, and Amazon Pay: the difference

Bottom line
Add a U.S.-issued Visa gift card to Amazon.com through Your Payments → Add a payment method → Add a credit or debit card. Check activation, balance, registration, and billing ZIP details first, and make sure the card covers the complete final total. If it does not, use a smaller order or consider Amazon-balance conversion only as a conditional workaround—not as a guaranteed split-payment method.
