For most people receiving Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, the quickest way to change the bank account for future deposits is to sign in to a personal my Social Security account and use SSA’s “Update direct deposit” service. SSI recipients may need a different route, and phone changes require a one-time identity code. The right method depends on your benefit type and which identity-verification options you can use.
Before you start, decide which route fits your situation: online through SSA, through your bank’s Automated Enrollment service, by calling SSA with a one-time code, or in person if you cannot use the online or phone-code options. Have your new account details ready, but do not assume a requested change will redirect the very next payment. SSA’s stated processing time and your payment’s destination date are not the same thing.

Choose the route that fits your benefit and access
SSA identifies online service as the fastest way to update direct deposit for eligible beneficiaries. If you cannot complete the change online, the agency provides next steps. A participating bank may also be able to submit the change through Automated Enrollment (ENR). Phone and in-person options are available under SSA’s current identity rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe practical choice turns on four things: your benefit type, whether you can sign in to a personal my Social Security account, whether your bank offers ENR, and whether you can generate the one-time code needed for a phone change. A route that works for a retirement beneficiary may not be available in the same way to someone receiving SSI. Use SSA’s current instructions for your case rather than assuming every beneficiary sees the same account options.

| Route | Who it may suit | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| my Social Security online | Eligible retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiaries who can access a personal account | SSA calls this the fastest route. Availability depends on benefit type; use the service prompts to see whether you can complete the change online. |
| Bank Automated Enrollment (ENR) | People whose bank offers ENR for submitting updated direct-deposit details to SSA | Ask your bank whether it participates; not all banks offer this service. It can be an alternative if the online SSA service is unavailable to you. |
| Call SSA | People who can sign in to or create a my Social Security account to generate the required one-time code | Call 1-800-772-1213 and provide the code generated at ssa.gov/PIN. TTY: 1-800-325-0778. |
| Social Security office | People who cannot use SSA online services or generate the one-time phone code | SSA says you must prove your identity at an office to change direct deposit in this situation. Check current office instructions before traveling. |
In short, start online if you are an eligible retirement, survivors, or disability beneficiary with account access. If you are blocked there, ask your bank about ENR. If you want to call, first make sure you can generate the code. If neither online access nor the code is available, SSA says an office visit is required for identity proofing. For SSI, check the special instructions below before relying on the standard online path.
Update your information online
- Go to SSA’s “Update direct deposit” page and sign in to your personal my Social Security account, or create one if you do not have an account.
- Select the direct-deposit update option and follow the prompts. The available steps can depend on your benefit type. If the online change is not available for you, follow the next steps SSA provides rather than repeatedly trying a route that the service says is unavailable.
- Enter the destination account’s routing number and account number. Confirm both numbers with the bank before submitting them; do not guess, rely on an unofficial directory, or assume a check image is a dependable source for the details you need.
- Review the information carefully and submit the change. Keep a note of when you requested it so you can follow up if needed.
Use only SSA’s official site and account flow. Do not share your my Social Security password or one-time identity code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly. If you reach the update service through a search result or a message, make sure you are on SSA’s official site before signing in.
A useful preparation step is to verify the destination account information with the financial institution that holds the account. Have the routing and account numbers available before beginning, so you can enter them carefully instead of stopping midway to look them up. The research-backed instructions do not establish that SSA requires any particular bank document or check; they do establish that the numbers should be confirmed with the bank rather than guessed.

Ask whether your bank uses ENR
Automated Enrollment lets a participating bank send updated direct-deposit information to SSA. Contact your bank and ask specifically whether it supports SSA’s ENR process. If it does, ask the bank what information it needs and how it will confirm submission. ENR participation is not universal, so do not assume the bank can make the change.
ENR is a bank-submitted route, not a guarantee that any financial institution can change SSA payment instructions. If your bank does not offer the process, return to SSA’s options: use the phone route if you can generate the one-time code, or arrange identity proofing at an office if you cannot use SSA online services or generate the code.
Compared with calling SSA, ENR may avoid a call or office trip when your bank participates and can submit the update. Its key limitation is eligibility at the bank level: participation varies. Confirm the service is available before planning around it, and ask the bank what it can confirm about submission. Do not treat simply opening an account or giving the bank new details as proof that SSA has received a direct-deposit update.
Call SSA using a one-time code
Under SSA’s identity guidance effective April 28, 2025, phone changes require a one-time code. First sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account, then generate the code at ssa.gov/PIN. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and provide the code when asked. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778. Representatives are available in most U.S. time zones Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The code requirement means phone service is not a workaround for being unable to access SSA’s online identity process: generating the code itself requires signing in to or creating a personal account. If you cannot do that, SSA directs you to prove your identity at a Social Security office to change direct deposit. Do not rely on older reports that phone changes were eliminated; SSA’s later identity guidance describes the current code-based phone route.
Before calling, have the new account’s routing and account numbers ready and verify them with the bank. The phone route can be useful if you can complete the identity step but prefer to speak with SSA. It is not the route to choose if you cannot generate the code. Keep the code private and provide it only as part of a change you initiated through SSA’s official process.
Visit an office if you cannot use online services or generate the code
SSA says a person who cannot use its online services or generate the one-time code must prove identity at a Social Security office to change direct deposit. The task page offers appointments, while SSA’s identity guidance says an appointment is not required solely for a direct-deposit change. These statements address different parts of the process: an appointment may be offered, but the identity guidance does not make one mandatory just for this type of change. Check the current office instructions before traveling, since appointment and service details can change.
This route is for completing the identity-proofing step when the online and phone-code routes are not usable. Do not travel based only on old appointment information or assume that the same office procedures apply everywhere; check SSA’s current page first. If you live outside the United States, its territories, or commonwealths, SSA’s task page directs you to contact a Federal Benefits Unit to request an appointment.
Special cases: SSI and representative payees
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Do not assume an SSI direct-deposit change can be made through the ordinary My Profile flow. SSA’s FAQ says changes are not currently available there for SSI recipients. Its SSI reporting instructions say to call to report a change to the account used for direct deposit and to provide the current routing and account numbers when changing by phone. Identity checks also apply, so consult the live SSA instructions for your circumstances before choosing a route.
The distinction matters because the standard online update guidance for retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries does not promise an online My Profile change for SSI. If you receive SSI, start with SSA’s SSI change-reporting page and follow the instructions for reporting a change to the account used for direct deposit. Have the routing and account numbers available if SSA instructs you to report it by phone. Do not infer from a general direct-deposit page that you can complete the SSI change through the same personal-account workflow.
See SSA’s direct-deposit FAQ and SSI change-reporting instructions for the current guidance.

Representative payees
If you are an authorized representative payee managing someone else’s benefits, use the appropriate payee route rather than assuming the beneficiary’s personal account process applies. SSA lists direct-deposit management as a capability of the Representative Payee Portal.
Recommended Free Tools
The important point is to use an authorized process for the role in which you manage the benefit. Do not try to treat the beneficiary’s login as a substitute for the payee portal or assume that being a relative or helper gives you authority to change someone else’s payment. SSA’s account information lists direct-deposit management among portal capabilities; follow the live portal instructions for access and action.
If you do not have a bank account
SSA points people who need an account toward FDIC information about opening one online or at a local branch. You do not have to open a particular bank account just to request a change if another valid payment method applies. Choose a payment option that meets your needs and follow SSA’s current instructions.
This is not a recommendation to use a particular bank or account. SSA’s cited guidance points readers to general FDIC information and does not endorse a named financial institution. If you are deciding whether to open an account, use reliable information about account opening and then follow SSA’s current payment instructions for whichever valid method applies to you.
When will the new account receive a payment?
On March 18, 2025, SSA announced that it would expedite online and in-person direct-deposit change requests to one business day, replacing a prior 30-day hold. That is SSA’s announced processing time, not a guarantee that a particular payment will arrive in the new account. The announcement does not establish a universal cutoff date for a payment or the time a receiving bank takes to post a deposit. If a payment is approaching, use SSA’s official service or contact the agency to ask which account is on record and what applies to your case.

Keep two timing questions separate: how long SSA says it takes to process a request, and which account will receive a specific upcoming payment. SSA’s one-business-day announcement answers the first at an agency level; it does not give an individual cutoff date, establish when a bank will post the money, or guarantee that the next deposit will use the new details. If timing matters, do not make plans on the assumption that a change submitted close to a payment date will apply to that payment.
SSA also says existing beneficiaries can continue receiving payments in the bank account already on record without taking identity-proofing action. You do not need to contact SSA merely to keep receiving benefits in your current account. The identity requirements described here concern making a change, not an obligation for all existing beneficiaries to re-verify themselves simply to keep the existing direct deposit in place.

SSA’s June 2, 2026 blog says federal benefits were required to be paid electronically as of September 30, 2025, citing federal law and Executive Order 14247, and says SSA planned to complete the transition for all beneficiaries during 2026. Because that transition information is time-sensitive, check SSA’s current page before relying on it as a present-tense rule for your own payment. It does not replace the direct-deposit update steps above.

Direct-deposit changes deserve care because they redirect benefit payments. SSA’s March 12, 2025 blog reported that “Approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct deposit fraud is associated with someone calling SSA to change direct deposit bank information.” This is SSA’s reported figure from 2025, not an independently verified or current fraud rate. It is a reason to be deliberate about who initiates a change and where you provide account details, not a basis for estimating your personal risk.

- Initiate changes through SSA’s official account, phone, or office process, or confirm that your bank is using ENR.
- Verify routing and account numbers directly with your financial institution before submitting them.
- Do not give an unsolicited caller your account password, one-time code, or other identity details. If you are unsure whether a contact is legitimate, end the call and use a contact route listed on SSA’s official site.
- Keep your account access information private and review SSA account activity for changes you did not request.
SSA’s Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek said in the March 18, 2025 announcement, “Americans deserve to have their Social Security records protected with the utmost integrity and vigilance.” That statement accompanied SSA’s focus on protecting records and expediting change requests. It does not alter the practical safeguards: use official channels, protect credentials, and check the account information you submit.
What to do if the change cannot be completed
- The online service is unavailable: Check whether ENR is available through your bank. If not, use SSA’s instructions for the phone-code or office route that applies to you.
- You cannot generate the one-time code: SSA says you must prove identity at an office to make the change. Check office instructions before you travel; if you live abroad, contact a Federal Benefits Unit.
- You receive SSI: Consult SSA’s SSI reporting guidance rather than relying on an ordinary My Profile change.
- You are changing someone else’s payment: Use the authorized representative payee process if you manage the benefit as a payee.
- You are unsure which account will receive an upcoming payment: Do not assume the change will affect the next deposit. Ask SSA about your case and confirm posting details with the receiving bank.
If you get stuck, the most useful next step depends on the reason: a benefit-type limitation points you back to SSA’s specific instructions; inability to access the online service may make ENR worth checking; inability to generate the phone code means office identity proofing is required under SSA’s guidance. Avoid repeating an unavailable route or responding to an unsolicited offer to “fix” the payment. Use SSA’s official instructions and ask about your own case when the payment date is near.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I change my direct deposit information for Social Security benefits?
If you receive eligible retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, sign in to your personal my Social Security account and choose SSA’s “Update direct deposit” service. Follow the prompts and enter the routing and account numbers you have confirmed with your bank. If the service is unavailable for your benefit, SSA will provide next steps; a participating bank may also submit an update through ENR.
Can I change my Social Security direct deposit by phone?
Yes. Under SSA’s current identity guidance, you need to generate a one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN, which requires signing in to or creating a personal my Social Security account. Then call 1-800-772-1213 and provide the code. TTY: 1-800-325-0778. If you cannot use SSA online services or generate the code, SSA says you must prove your identity at an office to make the change.

Does every bank offer Automated Enrollment (ENR)?
No. ENR participation is not universal. Ask your bank specifically whether it supports SSA’s Automated Enrollment process and what information it needs before relying on the bank to submit a change.
How long does a Social Security direct-deposit change take?
SSA announced on March 18, 2025 that it would expedite online and in-person change requests to one business day, replacing a prior 30-day hold. This is an agency processing announcement, not a promise that your next payment will go to the new account. SSA has not provided a universal cutoff date for a particular payment, and the announcement does not establish the receiving bank’s posting time.
Do I need to prove my identity if I am not changing my bank account?
SSA says existing beneficiaries can continue receiving payments in the bank account already on record without taking identity-proofing action. The identity steps described here apply when you want to change direct deposit.
Do I need an appointment to change direct deposit at a Social Security office?
SSA’s task page offers appointments, but its identity guidance says an appointment is not required solely for a direct-deposit change. Check the current office instructions before traveling, because office service details can change. People outside the U.S., its territories, or commonwealths are directed to contact a Federal Benefits Unit to request an appointment.
Can I update direct deposit for someone else?
If you are an authorized representative payee, use the appropriate payee route. SSA lists direct-deposit management as a capability of the Representative Payee Portal; do not assume the beneficiary’s ordinary personal-account flow applies.
The Bottom Line
For eligible retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries, SSA’s online my Social Security service is the fastest stated way to update direct deposit. Confirm the new routing and account numbers with your bank first. If online service is unavailable, ask whether your bank supports ENR; phone changes require a one-time code, and people who cannot use the online or code route must prove identity at an SSA office. SSI recipients and representative payees should use their specific SSA instructions. SSA announced one-business-day processing for certain requests, but that does not guarantee which account will receive your next payment.
