Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo update GST registration details, log in to the GST Portal and open Services > Registration. Choose Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields for eligible non-core changes, or Amendment of Registration Core Fields for a core change such as a business-address amendment. Choosing the right route matters: non-core amendments are automatically updated after successful filing, while core amendments require tax-officer approval.
The safest approach is to identify exactly which particulars need changing, confirm how the live portal classifies them, and follow the form’s prompts for that amendment. The two routes have different completion points: a successful non-core filing is described as automatically updated, while a core amendment must be tracked through an officer decision. Keep the acknowledgement and ARN so you can confirm submission and follow up if needed.

First decide whether the change is core or non-core
Before starting an application, list the exact registration particulars you need to change and check how the live GST Portal classifies each one. GSTN’s Amendment of Non-Core Fields manual gives authorized-signatory details and stakeholder details, such as promoter or partner particulars, as examples of non-core information. These are examples, not a complete classification of every field. Do not assume that a particular change is non-core merely because it seems like a small correction; rely on the category shown for the field in the current portal.

The route is not interchangeable. The principal and additional places of business cannot be amended through the non-core form. A business-address change belongs in the core-amendment route. The official materials reviewed here do not provide a universal document checklist or a complete field-by-field core application guide, so follow the current portal’s instructions for the specific change.

This distinction answers an important practical question: which route should you use? If the detail is available as an editable field in the non-core service, use that service and follow its verification and submission steps. If the change concerns the business address, do not try to force it through the non-core screen. Open the core-amendment service instead. For any other field not covered by the examples below, check the live portal’s classification and prompts rather than extrapolating from another taxpayer’s application.
| Decision | Non-core amendment | Core amendment |
|---|---|---|
| Examples established by GSTN guidance | Authorized-signatory and stakeholder details | Business-address changes are excluded from the non-core route |
| What happens after filing | Automatically updated after successful filing; no tax-officer approval is described | Requires tax-officer approval |
| What to monitor | Successful filing acknowledgement and ARN | Application disposition, then the latest registration certificate |
In other words, “submitted” and “approved” do not mean the same thing for both routes. A non-core change is described as automatically updated after successful filing. A core filing still needs an officer decision, so retain its reference and keep checking its disposition rather than treating the ARN alone as confirmation of approval.
Prepare before you open the amendment form
- Identify every field to change. If more than one detail needs updating, check the live portal’s category for each rather than assuming all changes use one form. This is especially important if the set of changes includes an address: the principal and additional places of business cannot be amended through the non-core form.
- Check contact records. Compare mobile numbers and email addresses recorded for partners or promoters and authorized signatories. GSTN’s GST Portal – Known Issues & Suggested Solutions documents a duplicate-contact warning when these records share contact details. It says the warning does not arise when the same person is registered in more than one capacity. Check whether a duplicate is unintended before filing; do not assume every repeated contact is an error.
- Gather the evidence requested for your change. Requirements depend on the field and the current form. Use the live application’s instructions; do not assume one document list applies to every amendment. The official material reviewed does not establish a universal checklist, so a checklist for one kind of change should not be presented as if it applies to another.
- Use the current portal labels. GSTN identifies REG-14 as the taxpayer amendment application in its GST Forms Available on the GST Common Portal document, but that document is older than the live manuals. Confirm the form and service names shown after login.
- Plan to save the filing record. Note where you will keep the acknowledgement and ARN before submitting. These are useful for confirming receipt and for tracking a core application; the ARN itself should not be confused with a core-amendment decision.
A short pre-filing check can prevent avoidable restarts. Confirm that you are using the taxpayer’s correct portal account, that you have identified the specific registration details to change, and that you have reviewed any field-specific evidence or verification prompts that the live form displays. These are preparation checks, not a substitute for the portal’s requirements: follow the instructions attached to the amendment you are actually filing.
File a non-core amendment
Use this procedure for a change the portal classifies as non-core. The exact tabs and fields available depend on the particulars being amended. The route below follows GSTN’s non-core amendment manual; it is not a walkthrough for a core amendment.
- Log in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields.
- Open the relevant tab and edit the available particulars. GSTN’s manual includes authorized-signatory and stakeholder information as examples. If the field you need is not available or the change is an address amendment, stop and confirm the correct category rather than making an unrelated edit.
- Complete the verification section. Select the authorized signatory and enter the place as prompted by the form.
- Submit using an electronic authentication option available to you in the portal. Use the option offered for your filing and complete the on-screen authentication process.
- Save the acknowledgement and ARN. GSTN says a successful submission acknowledgement is sent to the registered email address and mobile number, and the ARN is also intimated to the primary authorized signatory.
GSTN describes successful non-core amendments as automatically updated; they do not wait for tax-officer approval. This is why the distinction between a successful submission and an incomplete attempt matters: save the acknowledgement confirming a successful filing, rather than relying only on the fact that you opened or edited the form. Retain the ARN with your records in case you need to verify that the filing was received.
If the portal raises a validation message while you are working, read it in the context of the field and records involved. The researched issue guide specifically identifies a warning about common mobile or email details across partner/promoter and authorized-signatory records. It does not establish that every other validation message has the same cause. Correct the relevant record or follow the live portal’s stated instruction; do not guess at a fix based on an unrelated error.

File and track a core amendment
For a core change, including a business-address amendment, use Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields. The reviewed official guidance establishes that core amendments require tax-officer approval, but does not provide a complete core-form walkthrough. Follow the current form’s field-specific prompts and evidence requirements instead of applying the non-core steps to it.
In particular, do not assume that the non-core manual’s tabs, verification fields, authentication sequence, or automatic-update outcome also describe the core service. The material reviewed here supports the route distinction and approval requirement, but not a universal set of core form fields or supporting documents. Let the live core application determine what information and evidence are required for your specific amendment.
After submission, keep the application reference and check the status until the application is disposed of. An ARN or acknowledgement records filing; it does not itself mean the officer has approved the core change. GSTN’s issue guide says to contact the jurisdictional officer if a core amendment remains undisposed after 15 working days, counting neither Saturdays, Sundays nor public holidays. That is the guide’s escalation point for this delay case, not a guarantee that every application will be decided within that period.
Use the 15-working-day guidance as a point to decide when to follow up, not as a reason to assume that a decision has already been made. Keep the ARN or other application reference available when contacting the jurisdictional officer so you can identify the pending application. The researched guide does not prescribe a different escalation route for every type of delay, so do not substitute an invented timeline or process for its stated advice.
Fix the common errors that interrupt an application
The amendment was started in the wrong category
If the form does not allow the change you need, check the classification before trying again. A principal or additional place of business cannot be changed through the non-core form; use the core-amendment service for a business-address change. The non-core examples in GSTN’s manual are useful for orientation, but they do not establish that every other field is core or non-core. Confirm the relevant category on the live portal.

The portal flags duplicate email or mobile details
Review the contact information on partner or promoter records and authorized-signatory records. Correct unintended sharing of an email address or mobile number before resubmitting. GSTN notes that the warning does not arise when one person is listed in multiple capacities, so do not treat that particular arrangement as the documented cause of the warning. Focus on the relationship between the records the warning identifies and check whether their contact details were entered as intended.

This warning is a concrete reason to review contact records before beginning, not a reason to alter a person’s details without checking them. If the same person appears in more than one capacity, the issue guide says that arrangement does not produce this warning. If the records belong to different people, review whether a shared email or mobile number is causing the portal alert and resolve any unintended duplication before trying the filing again.
You have an ARN but no core-amendment decision
An ARN or filing acknowledgement confirms submission; it is not the same as an approval decision for a core amendment. Track the application’s disposition. If it remains pending beyond GSTN’s 15-working-day period, excluding weekends and public holidays, contact the jurisdictional officer. Do not use the automatic-update rule for non-core amendments to infer that a core change has been approved.
You cannot find the updated registration certificate
After a core-amendment decision, open Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates from the dashboard. GSTN’s issue guide says the latest certificate is selected by its issue date. Check that service rather than relying on an older downloaded copy. The relevant check is to retrieve the latest certificate after the core application has been decided, rather than expecting the old file already saved on your computer to change.
You are unsure which supporting documents to upload
Do not borrow a document list from a different amendment type and assume it will be accepted for yours. The official sources reviewed do not establish a universal evidence checklist or a complete field-by-field core application guide. Follow the instructions and document prompts shown for the specific field in the live application. If the portal does not make a requirement clear, consult the current official guidance for that route rather than inventing a requirement.
You are relying on an older form reference
GSTN’s forms document identifies REG-14 as the taxpayer amendment application, but it is older than the live manuals. That reference can help explain terminology, but it should not override the labels or instructions currently displayed after you log in. Confirm the current service name and form flow before proceeding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the right records after filing
- Retain the ARN and acknowledgement for the amendment. For a non-core filing, GSTN says the acknowledgement is sent to the registered email address and mobile number and the ARN is intimated to the primary authorized signatory; save your own record as well.
- For a core amendment, retain the application reference and decision information. Continue tracking the application until it is disposed of, and use the jurisdictional-officer follow-up advice if the documented 15-working-day period has passed without disposition.
- After a core decision, retrieve the latest certificate through Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates. The issue guide says the latest certificate is selected by issue date, so use the current portal copy rather than an older saved version.
- Keep copies of supporting evidence requested by the form and the version of the details submitted, so you can reconcile the application with your business records. Evidence requirements vary by amendment; retain what the live form required rather than assuming the same materials apply in every case.
The administrative record you need depends on the amendment: a successful non-core submission is automatically updated, whereas a core change requires an approval decision. Do not treat the two processes as having the same completion point. In both cases, keeping the reference and the submitted details makes it easier to establish what was filed; for a core change, the decision and latest certificate are additional checkpoints.

The official portal guidance supports a straightforward sequence: classify the field, use the matching amendment service, satisfy the live form’s prompts, and keep the filing record. For a core amendment, add status tracking and certificate retrieval to that sequence. This avoids two frequent sources of confusion: trying to change an address through the non-core service and mistaking proof of submission for an officer’s decision.
