To estimate your Social Security retirement benefit using your official earnings record, sign in to or create a my Social Security account. It gives you access to your Social Security Statement, yearly earnings history, and personalized estimates. Check that earnings history for errors, then use the account’s Retirement Calculator to compare potential start ages or dates and see how assumed future earnings affect the estimate.
Get an estimate based on your earnings record
The most direct way to estimate your retirement benefit from the earnings history Social Security Administration (SSA) has on file is through a personal my Social Security account. It brings together your Statement, earnings history, and personalized benefit estimates. That makes it a good starting point if your goal is not just a general illustration, but an estimate tied to your own record.

- Sign in or create an account. Go to my Social Security. The account provides your Statement and personalized benefit estimates. If you are comparing tools, remember that an account estimate is different from a calculator where you type in information yourself.
- Open your Social Security Statement. Use the account to review your earnings history and the retirement estimates available to you. You can also find information about the Statement on SSA’s Get Your Social Security Statement page. The Statement is the record to inspect before treating an estimate as representative of your earnings history.
- Check the earnings listed for each year. The online Statement shows yearly earnings, but not employer names or employer-by-employer detail. Review the annual entries for years that look missing, incomplete, or inconsistent with what you expect. The Statement is a yearly summary, not an itemized employment ledger.
- Compare possible retirement start dates. The account’s Retirement Calculator lets you compare estimates for different starting ages or dates. If you change assumed future earnings, treat the result as a projection based on that assumption, not a guaranteed amount. Note which start date and future-income assumption go with each estimate so you are comparing like with like.
- Report discrepancies before relying on the estimate. If you spot an error, SSA’s sample Statement directs you to report it through my Social Security or by calling SSA. Revisit the estimate after addressing a discrepancy, since the estimate depends on the earnings record SSA uses.
SSA bases retirement estimates on work earnings covered by Social Security. Pensions and investment income are not covered work earnings for this estimate. SSA describes the basis plainly: “We calculate your benefits based on your work earnings.” See its Get a benefits estimate page.

The result is a personalized estimate, not a guarantee of a future payment. The information you see is tied to the earnings record and assumptions used for the calculation. If the record is wrong or the calculator assumes future earnings different from what you expect, the result may not match the circumstances you are trying to plan for. First inspect the record; then make sure you understand the assumptions behind each comparison.

Choose the SSA calculator that fits your situation
The calculators differ in whether they use your official earnings record automatically, how much information you must enter, and whether you need advanced features. Those distinctions matter: a number from a quick tool should not be described as an estimate calculated from your official record if the tool does not access that record.
| Tool | Uses your SSA earnings record automatically? | What you provide | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| my Social Security account estimate | Yes; the estimate uses the earnings record SSA holds for you. | Sign in, then compare available start ages or dates. You can adjust expected future income. | A personalized estimate tied to your official record. |
| Online Benefits Calculator | No; it is not linked to the SSA earnings database. | Enter earnings from your Statement manually. SSA’s page says it was updated in August 2026. | Someone who wants to enter earnings history manually or calculate outside the account. |
| Quick Calculator | No; it does not access your earnings record. | Supply limited details and adjust assumed past earnings. | A rough estimate when you do not need a record-based calculation. SSA cautions that an insufficient earnings history makes the estimate unreliable. |
| Detailed Calculator | Not stated on the cited SSA page. | Download the calculator and provide information for a detailed calculation. | Estimates requiring more features. SSA lists version 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, and recommends trying simpler calculators first for ordinary estimates. |
For a standard personal estimate, start with my Social Security rather than treating a Quick Calculator result as earnings-record-based. If using the Online Calculator, transfer the earnings figures from your Statement carefully; entering different or incomplete earnings can produce a different estimate. SSA’s general Benefit Calculators page links to its available tools.
When each tool makes sense
Choose the account estimate when you want the easiest record-based route. It uses the earnings record SSA holds for you, and its Retirement Calculator allows comparisons across available start ages or dates. You can also adjust expected future income. Because it uses the agency’s record, checking that record first is part of using the tool well, not a separate optional calculation step.
Choose the Online Benefits Calculator if you want to enter earnings manually. This calculator is not connected to the SSA earnings database. The earnings history must come from your Statement and be entered by you. That gives you a way to calculate outside the account, but it also means omissions or transcription differences can change the result. SSA’s page reported an update in August 2026; software details can change, so check the linked SSA page when using it.
Choose the Quick Calculator only for a rough estimate. It requests limited details and does not access the earnings record. SSA’s own warning is direct: “For security, the ‘Quick Calculator’ does not access your earnings record; instead, it will estimate your earnings based on information you provide.” If your earnings history is insufficient, SSA cautions that the result may be unreliable. Do not use a Quick Calculator estimate as a substitute for reviewing your Statement and obtaining an account-based estimate when one is available.
Consider the Detailed Calculator for advanced features. It is a downloadable tool for estimates that require more features. SSA identifies the current version in the cited materials as 2026.2, released July 13, 2026, and recommends trying simpler calculators first for ordinary estimates. The cited page does not establish that it automatically accesses your SSA earnings record, so do not assume it does; use the tool’s instructions and the SSA page to understand its inputs.
In short, choose based on the job you need done: automatic use of the official record, manual entry of earnings, a quick rough figure, or advanced calculation features. Those are not interchangeable workflows. For a useful comparison, keep the earnings data and future-income assumptions consistent wherever you can, and label the tool used for each result.

Understand what the earnings record means
Your record is a year-by-year history of earnings that SSA uses to calculate benefits. It is important to check it because the estimate depends on the work earnings credited to your record. The online Statement is useful for reviewing annual totals, but it does not identify employers, so it is not an itemized employment ledger.
The estimate concerns earnings covered by Social Security, not every source of money you may receive. Pension income and investment income do not count as covered work earnings for this estimate. This is why entering or reviewing work earnings is central to the process: an estimate is not calculated by adding all income sources together.
2026 earnings and work-credit figures
For 2026, SSA sets the annual earnings limit at $184,500; earnings above that limit do not increase benefits. A worker earns one Social Security work credit for each $1,890 in covered earnings in 2026, up to four credits in a year. These figures are specific to 2026 and can change annually; check SSA’s benefit-estimate information for the applicable year.
These figures serve different purposes. The earnings limit caps the amount of earnings counted for benefit calculations in a year, while work credits measure eligibility for benefits. Neither figure, by itself, tells you the monthly retirement amount; that requires an estimate using the earnings record and the retirement timing you are considering.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do not treat the credit threshold as a benefit estimate or as a substitute for reviewing the earnings history. The credit amount answers how much covered earnings is needed for one credit in 2026, with no more than four credits earned in a year. The annual earnings limit answers a different question about how much earnings can increase benefits in that year. They are year-specific figures, not a prediction of your own benefit amount.
What to do if your earnings history is wrong or incomplete
- Identify the year and amount in question. Compare the annual totals on your Statement with records you retained, such as tax or wage documents. The online Statement gives yearly earnings, so begin by noting the particular year or years that appear incorrect.
- Report the error to SSA. The Statement sample directs people to report errors through my Social Security or by calling SSA. Provide the year involved and supporting information requested by SSA. Reporting the issue is the route to address the record; a calculator cannot correct it.
- Distinguish yearly totals from employer detail. The free online Statement shows yearly earnings, not employer information. If you need itemized employer-level earnings data, SSA offers a separate request process through Form SSA-7050, Request for Earnings Information.
SSA’s Form SSA-7050 page lists fees effective October 1, 2024: $35 for certified yearly totals, $61 for a non-certified detailed statement, and $96 for a certified detailed statement. These are form-request fees, not a charge for accessing the online Statement. Check the form page for current charges before submitting a request because fees may change.
Use the distinction between the two records to avoid paying for information you do not need. If your aim is to get a retirement estimate and review the annual earnings SSA has on file, start with the online Statement in your account. If you specifically need employer-level detail, the SSA-7050 process is separate and has the listed fees. The online Statement itself does not show employer names, and the Form SSA-7050 fee schedule may change, so verify it before ordering.

How to use estimates when planning a retirement date
Use estimates as comparisons, not promises. Run the available estimates at the different ages or dates you are considering, keeping track of any assumptions about future work earnings. If you expect to stop working or earn a different amount than the calculator assumes, update the future-income assumption where the tool allows it; otherwise the result may not reflect your plan.
- Start with the account estimate tied to your earnings record, rather than a rough calculator, when available.
- Review your yearly earnings before interpreting the estimate.
- Compare start dates using the same record and note any changed assumptions.
- Recheck the estimate if your work plans or credited earnings change.
An estimate cannot correct an inaccurate record by itself. Resolve any earnings discrepancy with SSA, then revisit the estimate so the calculation reflects the corrected information.
A practical comparison routine
- Begin with the record. Open the Statement and inspect the annual earnings before focusing on the estimate. This keeps you from comparing retirement dates using an earnings history you already suspect is wrong.
- Choose the dates to compare. Use the Retirement Calculator’s available start ages or dates. SSA’s materials support comparing those options, but they do not provide a universal best date; the relevant comparison is the one that fits the dates you are considering.
- Keep assumptions visible. Record the future-income assumption used for each result. If you change expected future earnings, you have changed one input, so note it rather than attributing the entire difference to the start date.
- Use the correct tool for the question. For an estimate based on the SSA record, use my Social Security. For a manual calculation, use the Online Calculator with earnings from the Statement. Treat a Quick Calculator result as rough, and use the downloadable Detailed Calculator when you need its additional features.
- Revisit when facts change. Changed work plans or corrected credited earnings can alter the assumptions or underlying record. Recheck the estimate rather than treating an earlier projection as fixed.
The purpose of this routine is not to produce a guaranteed future payment. It is to make the comparison understandable: which record was used, which potential start date was selected, and what future earnings were assumed. If one result came from a rough tool and another from the official record, that difference in inputs matters when interpreting the numbers.
