How to Unlock or Unfreeze a Chime Card in the App

Use the Chime app’s card controls to unfreeze a card. If it is blocked after wrong PIN attempts or was reported lost, use the separate fix for that situation.

If you froze your Chime card, open the app and go to Profile > Cards. Select the card you want to use, then turn off the Freeze card toggle. Gray means the card is unfrozen; green means it is frozen. If the card remains declined, it may be blocked for another reason, such as repeated incorrect PIN attempts or a lost-or-stolen report.

Unfreeze a Chime card in the app

  1. Open the Chime app and tap Profile > Cards.
  2. If you have more than one card, swipe through the cards at the top of the screen and select the one you are trying to use.
  3. Turn off the Freeze card toggle. Gray indicates the card is unfrozen; green indicates that it is frozen.

While a card is frozen, new transactions are blocked, but recurring or already-pending payments may still go through. You can also manage the freeze on chime.com by going to Profile > Account details > Transactions. Chime’s card-freeze instructions explain the same control.

Check what kind of card restriction you have

“Locked” can mean different things, and the right fix depends on what happened.

Situation What to do Can the card be restored?
You froze the card Turn off the Freeze card toggle in Profile > Cards. Yes. The freeze can be toggled off. Chime
Three consecutive incorrect PIN attempts at a store or ATM Reset the PIN under Profile > Cards. If available, choose Manage physical card > Reset PIN and follow the prompts. Yes. Chime says a PIN reset immediately unblocks the card. Chime
The card was reported lost or stolen Request or use the replacement card rather than trying to unfreeze the old one. No. Chime says a reported lost-or-stolen card is deactivated and cannot be reactivated, even if it is found. Chime

If the card is still declined

Unfreezing only removes a freeze; it does not fix every decline. Open the declined transaction in the app and review the reason and suggested next step. Chime lists possible causes including an inactive or closed card, disabled transactions, insufficient funds, account limits, incorrect PIN or card details, a merchant issue, a blocked country, or fraud prevention. See Chime’s declined-transaction guidance.
