You can send a payment from Venmo to an eligible PayPal user directly by looking them up with the phone number linked to their PayPal account. To move your own Venmo balance into your own PayPal balance, you’ll need to transfer the money to a bank account first, then add it to PayPal.
Send money to another person’s PayPal account
Venmo’s cross-platform feature is for sending a payment to another person; it is not a direct transfer between your own Venmo and PayPal balances. In the U.S., Venmo says payments between Venmo and PayPal users are typically instant. Availability, timing, fees, and currency conversion can differ outside the U.S. Venmo’s guide to sending money between Venmo and PayPal explains current availability and conditions.

- In the Venmo app, start a payment and search for the recipient using the phone number associated with their PayPal account.
- Check that the profile is the right person. If it does not appear, verify the full phone number and ask the recipient to check their search privacy settings. The feature may not be available in their country or region.
- Enter the amount. Review the recipient, any fee, and any currency-conversion rate shown before confirming.
- Confirm the payment, then check Transactions in Venmo for its status.
Venmo says most payments are sent right away and generally cannot be canceled. A completed payment has been sent, but when the recipient sees it can depend on their region and account setup. Venmo’s current help guidance describes sending payments, not requesting money from PayPal users through this cross-platform feature.
Fees for a direct payment
For U.S. payments, Venmo says there is no fee when you pay from your Venmo balance, a debit card, or a bank account. Personal payments funded by credit card carry a fee. For international payments, fees or currency conversion may apply; Venmo displays the fee and exchange rate before you confirm.

Move your own Venmo balance into your PayPal balance
To move your own money, use a bank account as the bridge: transfer the Venmo balance to a connected bank account, then add funds to PayPal from that bank account or an eligible debit card. This takes two separate transfers, so it may take longer than paying another PayPal user directly.
1. Transfer the Venmo balance to your bank
- In the Venmo app, open Me and tap Add or Transfer under Wallet. Some accounts may show Manage instead.
- Enter the amount, choose Instant or 1–3 business days, and review the fee and destination details.
- Confirm the transfer and check its status in Venmo. Verify your bank details before sending.
Venmo also offers a balance-transfer option on its website. A standard transfer is free and typically takes one business day, but may take up to three business days. Weekends and U.S. bank holidays do not count toward that timing. Venmo’s standard bank transfer FAQ describes the process and timing.

An instant transfer generally arrives within 30 minutes when sent to an eligible U.S. bank account or participating Visa, Mastercard, or Discover debit card. Venmo lists a 1.75% fee, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Not every bank or card is eligible, and transfers can be reviewed, delayed, or declined. 2. Add the money to PayPal
After the money reaches your bank, PayPal says you can add funds to your balance from a confirmed bank account or an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card. On the PayPal website, go to Wallet and choose Transfer Money; in the app, use Add Money. Follow the options shown for your account.

PayPal says bank funding usually takes up to five business days, while debit-card funding is typically available in seconds. Available methods and daily, weekly, and monthly limits depend on the account. PayPal’s U.S. help article on adding money to a PayPal balance lists the current choices.

Limits and checks before you send
Venmo’s standard-transfer FAQ lists rolling weekly limits of $999.99 for users who have not verified their identity and up to $19,999.99 for verified users, plus an individual transfer limit of $5,000. Venmo says limits may change; international cross-platform payments have separate limits. PayPal also applies account-dependent funding limits. Check the limits and options displayed in your accounts before moving a large amount.
