What tariffs can affect at an aircraft manufacturer
A tariff on a completed aircraft is only one possible cost. Aircraft makers also buy materials and components across borders, operate international supplier networks, and depend on customers being able to accept deliveries. A trade dispute can therefore affect costs or delivery timing even when a completed aircraft or aircraft part receives different treatment under a trade agreement.
- Completed aircraft and parts: treatment depends on the trade route, applicable agreement, and product scope.
- Materials and other inputs: duties on metals or other imported goods can affect a manufacturer or its suppliers without being a tariff on the finished aircraft.
- Trade-related disruption: uncertainty, retaliatory measures, export restrictions, or customer decisions can affect suppliers and delivery schedules.
These channels should not be collapsed into one tariff figure. The cited public disclosures do not establish a directly comparable total cost for Airbus and Boeing.
What the EU-US aircraft framework covers
The European Commission says the EU-US trade framework entered into force on 1 July 2026 and places all aircraft and aircraft parts in a special most-favoured-nation (MFN)-tariff-only regime. This is a specific provision for aircraft and aircraft parts in EU-US trade; it is not evidence that every material, component, route, or related business cost is duty-free.

A separate US policy action followed on 9 July 2026. The presidential proclamation concerning imports of commercial aircraft, jet engines, and related parts directed further negotiations with trading partners. It records the Commerce Secretary’s recommendation that no immediate Section 232 tariffs be imposed. The proclamation leaves open the possibility of other remedies depending on the negotiations, so it does not settle what future policy will be.
How tariffs have affected Airbus
Airbus disclosed a partial tariff offset in 2025
At its 2026 annual results press conference, Airbus said higher commercial-aircraft deliveries, a more favourable hedge rate, and lower research-and-development costs were partially offset by tariffs, with most of the tariff impact occurring in Q4 2025. Airbus reported Commercial Aircraft adjusted EBIT of €5.5 billion in 2025, compared with €5.1 billion in 2024, and identified deliveries, hedging, lower R&D costs, and tariffs among the relevant factors. The company did not isolate a standalone tariff amount in that presentation; the EBIT change cannot be attributed to tariffs alone.

Its 2026 guidance includes applicable tariffs
In its H1 2026 results release, Airbus said its 2026 guidance includes the impact of currently applicable tariffs. The release reported H1 revenue of €33.2 billion and 351 commercial-aircraft deliveries. Those are operating results, not measurements of tariff costs.
Airbus describes a cross-border supplier base
Airbus says an aircraft fitted with a US engine has around 40% US-manufactured content, and it describes US companies as participating in A350 production. These are Airbus’s own illustrative figures and descriptions, not an independent estimate or a universal content percentage for every aircraft. They help explain why tariffs on inputs and cross-border production can matter even when aircraft and parts have a distinct trade-policy treatment.

How tariffs and trade disputes have affected Boeing
Boeing reports supply-chain and financial exposure
Boeing’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, describes a volatile global trade environment and says tariffs and export restrictions affect its supply chain. The filing warns that tariffs and retaliatory actions could materially affect Boeing’s financial position, results, or cash flows. It also says reported results reflected the company’s estimate of tariffs enacted by 31 December 2025 and certain potential mitigation. That filing describes its position through that date; it is not a live tariff schedule.
Some Chinese customers temporarily paused deliveries
Boeing’s filing says some Chinese customers temporarily paused accepting aircraft deliveries in 2025 while tariff negotiations were under way, and that deliveries later resumed. This is a disclosed example of trade tensions affecting customer acceptance and delivery timing, rather than only customs costs. The filing does not establish an ongoing pause as of its reporting.

Input tariffs are not automatically aircraft-export tariffs
Boeing’s filing describes 2025 US trade agreements with several partners—including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia—as recognizing tariff-free trade for products within the WTO Agreement on Trade in Civil Aircraft’s scope. It also notes tariffs on some other goods, including certain metal imports, goods from China, and goods from Canada and Mexico that do not comply with USMCA. These categories should not be treated as a duty on every Boeing aircraft export.

The disclosures support comparing the types of exposure and the events each company reported, not ranking which manufacturer paid more. Airbus’s statement is a directional performance explanation; Boeing’s filing emphasizes risk, estimates, and a customer disruption. Neither supplies an apples-to-apples tariff-cost figure.

Do tariffs mean higher plane-ticket prices or delayed flights?
The cited disclosures do not establish that tariffs have raised airline ticket prices, nor do they quantify a tariff-driven change in aircraft prices. A cost increase for a manufacturer or supplier does not by itself show whether the cost is absorbed, passed to an airline, reflected in a negotiated aircraft price, or offset elsewhere.
There is one specific delivery example: Boeing said some Chinese customers paused accepting aircraft during 2025 tariff negotiations, then resumed. That does not establish a general delay to aircraft deliveries, airline schedules, or passenger travel. Airbus’s cited tariff disclosure describes a financial-performance offset, not a measured delivery delay.
