You can track activity on a government-linked crypto address by starting with an official case record, checking the identified address or transaction on the relevant blockchain, and documenting what the ledger shows at a specific time. The chain records transactions, not government ownership: an address or a provider’s label alone does not prove who controls funds or their legal status.
Start with an official case or forfeiture notice
Choose a specific seizure, forfeiture, or other asset event rather than beginning with a provider’s estimate of government holdings. Search announcements from the Department of Justice (DOJ), a U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), or another relevant agency. Record the agency, publication date, case name or number, crypto asset and network, and the legal stage described.
Forfeiture.gov lets the public search federal forfeiture notices using keywords and fields such as asset type, description, seizure dates, court case number, and asset ID. The site describes its notices as pending federal forfeiture notices; it is a discovery tool, not a complete live record of assets currently held by the government. Follow a notice back to the underlying case record and check what has happened since it was published.
Distinguish a seizure announcement or forfeiture complaint from a final forfeiture order. For example, DOJ’s 2020 Silk Road release described a civil complaint and allegations, while its 2026 Helix announcement reported that a court had entered a final order of forfeiture. A seizure means authorities took control under legal process; it does not, by itself, establish permanent government ownership. ( DOJ’s Silk Road announcement; DOJ’s Helix announcement.)

Find the address-level evidence
In the official announcement, complaint, court filing, or other case record, look for a public wallet address, transaction hash, amount, or explanation of how investigators identified the funds. Prefer an address or transaction the primary record actually identifies. If the public record does not give an address, do not present an address found through an analytics service as officially confirmed; identify the provider and label the connection as its attribution.
The DOJ’s 2021 DarkSide ransomware announcement offers a concrete example: investigators traced Bitcoin ledger transfers to a specific address for which the FBI held the private key. DOJ announced the seizure of 63.7 bitcoin. That case-specific amount describes the seizure, not a current government-wide total. Read the DOJ announcement. Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco said, “Following the money remains one of the most basic, yet powerful tools we have.”

Inspect the address or transaction on the correct blockchain
Use a public blockchain explorer that supports the asset’s network. Search the exact address or transaction hash from the case record. A token or coin can exist on more than one network, so confirm that the explorer and network match the official record before interpreting the result.
- Open the explorer for the relevant network and enter the official address or transaction hash.
- For each relevant transaction, note its identifier, block and displayed time, amount and unit, and whether the funds moved into or out of the address.
- Record the address’s observed balance and the date and time you checked it. Treat the balance as a dated snapshot, not a permanent or legal-status finding.
- When checking again, compare the transaction history with your earlier record and note transfers since that observation.
The public ledger can show transactions associated with an address. It does not name the address’s owner. A wallet is software that manages addresses and keys, and one wallet may involve multiple addresses; therefore, a single address balance is not necessarily a wallet-wide or agency-wide balance. Transfers to custodial services, privacy techniques, cross-chain activity, and address reuse can also complicate interpretation. DOJ’s Silk Road complaint, for example, described use of a tumbler, illustrating why a simple address lookup may not tell the whole story.

Separate blockchain observations from entity labels
Analytics companies may group addresses under an entity name such as “U.S. Government.” That label is an attribution made by the provider, not a fact recorded on the blockchain. State which provider made the attribution, when you checked it, and whether the specific address is independently identified in an agency or court record.
Arkham Intelligence has published U.S. Government wallet labels and case examples. Its 2026 holdings overview estimates approximately 325,000 BTC attributed to the U.S. Government, using a definition that includes wallets linked to federal agencies regardless of legal status. This is Arkham’s estimate and grouping—not an official government inventory, proof of current custody, or a statement that all attributed funds have been finally forfeited. Any provider total should be presented with its definition and observation date, not as a raw on-chain fact. See Arkham’s holdings overview.

When comparing tracking views, check whether each address appears in a primary case record, whether the figure comes from an explorer or a vendor’s entity attribution, the observation date and network coverage, the legal stage of the assets, and whether a balance is for one address or an entity grouping. An analytics dashboard can help discover and follow addresses, but the official case record is the stronger basis for describing why an address is linked to a government action.

In a 2023 audit report, the DOJ Office of the Inspector General described limitations in USMS’s asset-tracking system, including recording cryptocurrency type, valuation changes, fees, and forks; staff supplemented the system with spreadsheets. That finding is a reason to keep your own observations clearly dated and sourced. It does not establish whether any particular address is currently held by the government. Read the DOJ OIG audit.
What on-chain tracking can—and cannot—establish
A careful public record can show that a named agency or court document identified an address or transaction, and an explorer can show the subsequent activity visible on that network. Neither step alone establishes current custody, the final legal disposition of the funds, or whether authorities plan to move or sell them. Verify the case docket or a current agency statement before describing an asset as finally forfeited or still held.
There is no official, consolidated live U.S. Government crypto-wallet inventory established by the sources cited here. Third-party totals are estimates based on each provider’s attribution method and may include assets regardless of legal status. Keep any portfolio-wide figure attributed to its named provider and date, and do not turn it into an official government balance.
