Treat the result as an estimate tied to that source and its refresh time—not as a guaranteed sale price. To estimate unrealized gain or loss, you also need a cost basis for the holdings that remain.
Calculate the current USD value of each holding
- Identify the asset and quantity. Record the asset’s name or platform identifier as well as the amount you own. A ticker alone may not uniquely identify an asset.
- Choose a price source and currency. Retrieve the asset’s price explicitly in USD, and note the source and time it was refreshed. CoinGecko documents current and historical market data through its API and spreadsheet tools.
- Multiply quantity by price. Use
Position value (USD) = quantity held × current price (USD per unit). For example, if you hold 0.25 units and your selected feed reports $40,000 per unit, the arithmetic estimate is $10,000. This is an illustration, not a live quote. - Add the positions. Use
Total portfolio value (USD) = sum of each position value (USD). Keep the source and retrieval or refresh timestamp beside the total.
Choose a tracking method
Spreadsheet with a data add-on or API
A spreadsheet makes the arithmetic visible and lets you customize columns or combine holdings from different places. CoinGecko’s Google Sheets guide describes an add-on and API workflow; its Excel guide describes an add-in and formulas. Spreadsheet results may be cached, and refreshing more often can consume API call credits. Check the displayed refresh time rather than assuming a value is live.

Exchange or platform portfolio feature
A platform view can be convenient for holdings already recorded there. Coinbase says its investment performance feature tracks changes in asset value and unrealized performance; see Coinbase Help. A platform view may not include assets in other accounts or wallets, so a combined portfolio requires consolidating those holdings.

Custom API tracker
A custom tracker gives you control over asset coverage and history, but you must handle asset identifiers, API credentials, rate limits, refresh timing, and missing prices. CoinGecko’s API describes access to current and historical market data. Confirm that the specific assets and markets you need are supported before relying on the total.

Estimate unrealized gain or loss carefully
Current value is not the same as profit. A basic estimate for a position is Current position value − assigned cost basis. CoinGecko’s Excel guidance uses holdings value less total invested as a P&L column. The result depends on how cost basis is assigned to the units still held; it is not a universal tax or accounting calculation.
For a useful performance record, keep transaction history—not just today’s balances. Buys, sells, fees, transfers, rewards, and partial disposals can change holdings and cost basis. CoinGecko’s Excel tracker guide describes a workflow using transaction details and historical prices. A sheet containing only current quantities can estimate today’s value, but cannot reconstruct reliable realized performance by itself.

Check what your portfolio total includes
Before relying on a total, verify which assets, wallets, and networks it covers; whether prices are in USD and which market or data source they represent; and when prices were refreshed. Also check whether the tracker supports historical data or transaction imports, allows export, and accounts for duplicates, transfers, fees, or missing prices. An unsupported asset or unimported wallet can make a displayed total incomplete, while liabilities and fees may be absent from the calculation.
A quoted price can move quickly, and a spreadsheet may show cached data. The calculated value is therefore an estimate at a particular time and source, not a guaranteed execution price. Do not treat an unrealized gain estimate as the amount of tax owed: tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and circumstances, and the tracking formulas above do not establish a jurisdiction-specific tax result.
