Measure the income using the rewards’ fair market value in U.S. dollars at that time. If you later sell or exchange those tokens, that is a separate tax event: when the asset is held as a capital asset, calculate any gain or loss using its basis and report the disposition separately.
The practical challenge is preserving enough detail to support both events: when you received control of a reward and what it was worth then, and what happened if you later transferred or disposed of it. A transaction-level ledger, original platform records, and a year-end reconciliation can help you keep those parts distinct.

When are staking rewards taxable?
The key federal rule comes from IRS Revenue Ruling 2023-14. It addresses a cash-method taxpayer staking cryptocurrency native to a proof-of-stake blockchain and receiving additional units when validation occurs. The ruling says the taxpayer includes the value in gross income in the tax year they gain “dominion and control” over the rewards. The amount included is the rewards’ fair market value at that point.
In the ruling’s words, “A cash-method taxpayer who stakes cryptocurrency native to a proof-of-stake blockchain and receives additional units of cryptocurrency as rewards when validation occurs must include the value of the rewards in the taxpayer’s gross income in the taxable year that the taxpayer gains dominion and control over the rewards.” This is the IRS rule for the facts it describes; it should not be stretched into a one-size-fits-all answer for every staking product.

Dominion and control is the important timing test. A platform’s displayed reward date may be useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish when the tokens were available to you or subject to your control. Check the arrangement’s actual terms and mechanics, including whether the rewards were accessible, withdrawable, or subject to a meaningful restriction. These are facts to document, not a checklist that automatically decides the tax date. The ruling is authority for its described facts; it does not settle every custodial, delegated, locked, or protocol-specific arrangement.
Keep the receipt question separate from what you do with the tokens later. The income event is tied to when you gain control and the rewards’ value then. A subsequent sale or exchange is analyzed as a separate disposition. Waiting to sell is not, by itself, a reason to omit the income event when control has already been obtained.
What to do when the date is unclear
Preserve records showing both the platform’s reward date and the date you believe you obtained control, along with evidence explaining the difference. Save platform terms or notices relevant to access restrictions, transaction histories, wallet records, and any messages that clarify when a credit became available. Note the time zone used by each source; records may display dates and timestamps differently.

If rewards are locked, credited through a custodian, or subject to conditions, do not assume that either the display date or the eventual withdrawal date is automatically correct. The tax result depends on the facts of the arrangement. Record what the restriction was, when it began or ended, and which source supports your conclusion. If evidence is incomplete or the amount is material, seek qualified tax advice rather than selecting a date simply because it is easiest to export.
How to track each reward
Use a transaction-level ledger and retain the original exports from exchanges, wallets, validators, and protocols. The IRS identifies the asset type, acquisition date and time, units, and U.S.-dollar fair market value as information relevant to basis records. Recording those fields for each reward also gives you a supportable record of the income event and helps establish basis if you later dispose of the tokens.
Think of the ledger as an index to your evidence, not a replacement for it. A summary row should let you find the underlying record and understand how you arrived at the date, quantity, and value. Keep records in a form you can retrieve later, including original downloadable files and transaction identifiers where available. If you later amend a spreadsheet or correct an entry, preserve enough of the source material and notes to explain the change.

Fields to include in the ledger
- Asset and amount: record the asset name and ticker, plus the quantity received. Keep separate entries for different assets rather than combining them into a single dollar total.
- Dates and times: record when the reward appeared and when it became available or subject to your control. Include the time zone and preserve the platform’s original timestamp when possible.
- Receiving location: identify the wallet, exchange account, validator, or other account associated with the reward. This helps match a ledger entry to the export that supports it.
- Transaction evidence: capture a transaction ID or other identifier and the relevant platform, wallet, validator, or protocol record. If there is no on-chain transaction ID for a custodial credit, retain the account statement or other source showing it.
- U.S.-dollar value: record the fair market value when you obtained control, not just the token’s value at year-end or at a later sale.
- Price support: identify the source and conversion method used to determine the U.S.-dollar amount. Keep enough detail that you can later explain which value you used and when it applied.
- Fees: record fees, if any, separately and describe what they relate to. Do not silently net an amount against the reward or a later transaction without preserving the underlying details.
- Source file: note the file name or location for the exchange, validator, wallet, or protocol record supporting the row.
Build a repeatable reward-recording process
- Collect source records. Download the original activity exports from each platform and wallet where you stake, receive rewards, or move tokens. Save the files with dates or other clear identifiers so the relevant tax-year records are easy to locate.
- Identify each reward entry. Match the reward credit to the source record and record its asset, quantity, receiving account, and transaction ID or statement reference. If the platform groups several credits, retain the grouped source and make clear how your ledger reflects it.
- Assess the control date from the facts. Compare the displayed date with the arrangement’s mechanics and the evidence of availability or restrictions. Keep the reasoning and source records together, especially when the date you use differs from the platform’s label.
- Record the value and method. Enter the fair market value in U.S. dollars for the time control was obtained, together with the price source and conversion method. Avoid leaving the source of the value to memory; the ledger should point to it.
- Preserve later activity separately. Add records for subsequent transfers, sales, exchanges, and fees as their own activity. Do not overwrite the reward entry to make it look like the later movement was the original receipt.
- Reconcile and review. Compare the ledger with all account and wallet exports, investigate unmatched entries, and retain notes explaining corrections or unresolved questions.
Choosing a tracking tool or method
A spreadsheet, a tax-tracking service, or another recordkeeping method can be useful, but no particular paid product is required. Compare methods by practical recordkeeping features: whether timestamps are precise and include time zones; whether the method covers all relevant wallets and platforms; whether it can export the underlying data; whether it preserves an audit trail or correction history; and whether it records the price source and conversion method for each value.
Recommended Free Tools
Automation can make it easier to gather activity, but imported data still needs review. Check that the tool has not omitted a platform, confused a transfer with a disposition, duplicated an entry, or substituted a displayed date for the date supported by your control analysis. Retain the original source exports even if a service imports or reformats them. The goal is a record you can explain and substantiate, not a particular brand of software or a polished dashboard.
Reconcile wallets and platforms
At year-end, compare the ledger with activity from every wallet and platform where you received, held, or moved rewards. Reconcile by account and asset, not only by the total dollar value. A total can look plausible while still omitting a reward, duplicating an imported record, or losing the link between a reward and the wallet that received it.
Record wallet-to-wallet movements distinctly from sales or exchanges rather than treating every transfer as a disposition. Keep transaction details so you can substantiate ownership and continuity of the asset. A transfer record should help you connect the sending and receiving locations and distinguish that movement from an exchange of one asset for another. This is a recordkeeping practice, not a rule that resolves every unusual movement’s tax treatment; seek current guidance or professional advice if the facts are unusual.
If an export is unavailable or a platform account has been closed, preserve what you can retrieve—such as statements, wallet history, transaction identifiers, or correspondence—and note the gap. Do not fill a missing entry by guessing. A short note describing the missing source and any steps taken to reconstruct the record is more useful than an unsupported number.
How to report staking income on a federal return
The IRS directs taxpayers to report other ordinary income related to digital assets, including staking, on Form 1040, Schedule 1. Use the form and instructions for the tax year of the return; line references can change. Report the income for the year you obtained dominion and control, based on the fair market value you recorded for that event.

A practical preparation sequence is to total the reward income entries for the relevant tax year after reviewing the control dates and supporting values, then use the applicable Schedule 1 instructions to place the income on the return. Keep the underlying transaction-level detail even if the form displays a total rather than a list of each reward. The ledger and source records are what let you explain how the total was calculated.
This is the initial recognition of the reward. Do not combine it with a later sale or exchange as if they were one transaction. Keep the reward-entry calculation and its supporting evidence separate from the records for any subsequent disposition. A broker form, where received, also does not eliminate the need to account for income under the applicable rules.
What happens when you later sell or exchange the reward?
A later sale, exchange, or other disposition is a separate event. If you hold the reward as a capital asset, calculate the gain or loss on Form 8949 and report it on Schedule D, following the applicable tax-year instructions.
The value included in income when you obtained control is relevant to the reward’s later basis. To determine a disposition result, retain the quantity disposed of, the date, proceeds or exchange value, and any related records needed to establish basis and fees. Do not assume the initial income entry also reports the later disposition; they are distinct reporting steps.
For a clear audit trail, link the later disposition to the relevant reward or lot information in your records. If a reward was split across several transfers or only part of it was sold, preserve enough quantity and transaction detail to show what left the account and what remained. This does not replace the applicable tax-year rules for basis or disposition reporting; it helps keep the reward receipt, holding history, and sale or exchange from being collapsed into one vague entry.
Do not assume that every movement is a sale, or that every movement is automatically tax-free. A movement between wallets you control should be recorded as a transfer with supporting details; an exchange or sale should be recorded as a disposition for analysis under the applicable rules. If the nature of a transaction is not clear from the records, investigate it rather than forcing it into the category that produces the simplest spreadsheet entry.

How Form 1099-DA fits into your records
Form 1099-DA concerns broker reporting of proceeds from certain digital-asset dispositions. IRS guidance describes gross-proceeds reporting for transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and basis reporting for certain transactions on or after January 1, 2026. Those dates refer to broker reporting rules, not a change to the taxpayer’s obligation to maintain complete records.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe IRS identifies certain staking transactions as temporary broker-reporting exceptions under Notice 2024-57, but says the exception does not apply to rewards or other compensation earned by participants. Do not read that exception as a general exemption from reporting your own reward income. A Form 1099-DA is not a complete record of every reward or tax event, and you must report taxable income, gains, and losses whether or not you receive one.
When you receive a Form 1099-DA, compare its reported proceeds and transaction information with your own disposition records. Investigate differences rather than assuming the form is a complete history or that every item on it captures your basis. Keep the form with the records explaining your reward income, basis, transfers, and later dispositions. Broker proceeds reporting and your own income and gain-or-loss calculations serve different recordkeeping purposes.
Common tracking and reporting mistakes
- Using the platform date without checking control. A displayed date is evidence, not necessarily the tax receipt date under the ruling’s dominion-and-control test.
- Recording quantity but not U.S.-dollar value. Preserve the value at the time control is obtained, as well as the price source and conversion method.
- Using a later price for the receipt event. The relevant value in the ruling is the fair market value when dominion and control are obtained, not simply a year-end figure or the price on a later sale date.
- Combining receipt and sale. Reward income and a later capital-asset disposition are separate events with separate records and reporting.
- Relying only on a broker form. Broker reporting covers specified transactions and periods; it does not replace your own records or reporting obligations.
- Leaving transfers unexplained. Retain transaction details for movements between accounts so a transfer is not confused with a sale and asset continuity can be substantiated.
- Keeping only a summary spreadsheet. A summary without original exports, transaction references, or price support may not show where the numbers came from.
- Ignoring missing or inconsistent data. Reconcile records across platforms and wallets, and document gaps or corrections rather than silently guessing or deleting discrepancies.
- Assuming one answer covers every staking setup. The ruling describes specific facts. Custodial, delegated, locked, or protocol arrangements may require individual analysis.
Scope and situations needing extra care
This guidance concerns U.S. federal income-tax treatment for an individual cash-method taxpayer receiving proof-of-stake rewards. It does not determine state or non-U.S. tax treatment, business or trust reporting, the tax status of every fee, valuation of illiquid tokens, or the treatment of every locked, delegated, custodial, or protocol reward. Consult jurisdiction-specific guidance or a qualified tax professional when those circumstances apply, or when records do not establish when control began.
Professional help may be especially useful if you have rewards across multiple wallets and platforms, cannot establish a control date, received rewards through an arrangement with restrictions, face valuation questions for an illiquid token, or have business, trust, state, or foreign tax considerations. A crypto-aware tax preparer can review the facts and current rules; no particular firm or product is required by the IRS guidance discussed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report staking rewards on my taxes?
For U.S. federal reporting, the IRS directs taxpayers to report other ordinary income related to digital assets, including staking, on Form 1040 Schedule 1. Track each reward’s quantity, control date, U.S.-dollar fair market value, and supporting records. If you later dispose of the reward as a capital asset, report that separate gain or loss on Form 8949 and Schedule D under the applicable tax-year instructions.

When are crypto staking rewards taxable?
Under Revenue Ruling 2023-14, the cash-method taxpayer in the ruling’s described circumstances includes rewards in gross income in the year they gain dominion and control. The platform’s displayed reward date alone may not establish that date; consider the facts of availability and any restrictions, and preserve evidence.
Do I pay tax when I receive staking rewards or when I sell them?
These are separate potential tax events. The reward is included in gross income when you obtain dominion and control, measured at its fair market value then. A later sale or exchange of an asset held as a capital asset is a separate disposition that may produce a gain or loss.
What records should I keep for crypto staking rewards?
Keep the asset and ticker, quantity, date and time with time zone, receiving account or wallet, evidence of when control began, U.S.-dollar fair market value, price source and conversion method, transaction identifiers, relevant fees, and the original exchange, validator, wallet, or protocol records. Also retain records of later transfers and dispositions.
Is a Form 1099-DA enough to report my staking activity?
No. Form 1099-DA concerns broker reporting of proceeds from certain dispositions, and it is not a complete history of rewards or every tax event. Taxpayers must report taxable income, gains, and losses whether or not they receive the form, and should reconcile it with their own records.
Do I need paid crypto tax software to track rewards?
The cited IRS guidance does not require a particular paid product. Whatever method you use should preserve precise timestamps, cover all relevant wallets and platforms, allow exports, maintain an audit trail, and record the source and method for each valuation. Keep original source files even if you use an automated tracker.
The Bottom Line
For U.S. federal purposes, track each reward from the moment you obtain dominion and control: preserve its quantity, control date and time, U.S.-dollar value, price support, and source records. Report the reward income separately from any later disposition. Reconcile wallets, platform records, and any Form 1099-DA, and get qualified advice when your arrangement or control date is unclear.
