How to Decide When to Claim Social Security: Early, Full, or Delayed Retirement

Claiming at 62, at full retirement age, or as late as 70 changes your monthly Social Security benefit. Compare personal estimates, work plans, household needs and Medicare timing before choosing.

There is no single best age to claim Social Security retirement benefits. You can generally start at 62, claim at your full retirement age (FRA), or delay—up to age 70—to receive a larger monthly benefit. The right choice depends on your own estimated payments, cash needs, work plans, health and longevity uncertainty, and the effects on your household. Compare actual estimates for different start ages before deciding.

What changes when you claim early, at full retirement age, or later?

Your claiming age changes the monthly retirement benefit Social Security pays you. Starting before FRA reduces the monthly amount compared with waiting until FRA. Delaying beyond FRA increases it, but delayed retirement credits stop at age 70; waiting longer than that does not add another increase. Age 62 is the earliest ordinary age to claim retirement benefits.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These are different starting points for the same retirement-benefit decision, not separate programs. The increase or reduction associated with your start age affects your monthly retirement amount. It does not determine when you must stop working: you can stop work before claiming, continue working after you claim, or make other combinations. If you work before FRA, however, the earnings test may reduce payments for a time.

When you start What to expect What to check
Before FRA, no earlier than 62 A lower monthly benefit than at FRA. For someone whose FRA is 67, starting at 62 can reduce the full retirement benefit by as much as 30%, according to Social Security Administration (SSA) guidance. Your personal estimates, immediate cash needs, and whether work earnings before FRA could trigger withholding.
At FRA Your benefit is not reduced for starting before FRA, and you avoid delaying beyond FRA in exchange for a larger monthly amount. Your FRA based on birth year, your income needs, and whether continued work could raise your earnings-based calculation.
After FRA and no later than 70 Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly benefit through age 70. Whether you can meet expenses while waiting, and the implications for your spouse or survivor benefits and household finances.
After 70 Waiting beyond 70 does not increase the retirement benefit further through delayed retirement credits. If you have not claimed by then, consider applying rather than expecting a higher benefit from additional delay.

The 30% figure is specific: it is the potential reduction for claiming as early as 62 when FRA is 67, not a universal reduction for every person. Your precise monthly amounts depend on your record and start date. The SSA’s FAQ on choosing when to start, dated March 13, 2024, describes the decision as one that affects the monthly benefit for the rest of your life. Its wording is: “Choosing when to start receiving your Social Security retirement benefits is an important decision that affects your monthly benefit amount for the rest of your life.”

Find your full retirement age

FRA is the age at which you qualify for your full retirement benefit under Social Security’s age adjustment. It is not always 65, and it is not the same as Medicare eligibility age. For people born in 1960 or later, FRA is 67. The SSA’s 2026 table lists age 67 for people born in 1960 or later, including people attaining age 62 in 2026.

Check the SSA table for your birth year rather than relying on a rule of thumb. Pay attention to the SSA’s note for people born on January 1: their age-based treatment can differ from what a simple calendar-year lookup suggests. Use the birth date and the applicable table entry when comparing your own benefit estimates.

Knowing FRA helps you interpret both the claiming adjustment and the work earnings test. If you are approaching FRA, the calendar month you reach it matters: in that year, the earnings limit applies only to earnings before the FRA month, and earnings from the FRA month onward do not reduce benefits.

Use your own estimates instead of choosing by age alone

The useful comparison is not “62 versus 70” in the abstract. It is the monthly amount SSA estimates for you at different starting ages, alongside your actual financial and household circumstances. SSA’s online retirement guidance provides benefit estimates and tools; review the figures for the ages you are seriously considering, and make sure you are comparing the same earnings record and assumptions.

Look at the actual projected monthly amounts for the start ages you might choose, rather than assuming a standard percentage or using someone else’s benefit as a stand-in. These amounts give you a way to see what you would receive each month under different timing choices. The reviewed SSA information explains how the age adjustments work, but it does not establish one break-even age or prove that a particular claiming age maximizes lifetime benefits for every person. Your estimates are an input to the decision, not a verdict about how long you will live or what your household needs.

  1. Review your earnings record and estimated benefits. Use your SSA account or the official SSA retirement estimator resources to inspect your record and compare projected monthly amounts at different start ages. Check for missing or incorrect earnings years, because those can affect the estimate.
  2. Write down your necessary monthly expenses and other income. Include income you expect from work, savings, pensions, or other sources. Identify whether you need retirement benefits to meet expenses now or could bridge the gap while delaying.
  3. Set realistic work assumptions. Estimate wages or net self-employment income before FRA, the month you expect to reach FRA, and whether another year of work could replace a low- or zero-earnings year in your record.
  4. Consider your health and uncertainty without treating either as a guarantee. A higher monthly amount later may matter more if you receive benefits for many years, while earlier payments may matter more if you need income now. No general age rule can predict how long you will live or establish a best choice for every person.
  5. Look at household consequences. Consider whether a spouse, former spouse, or survivor could be affected by your decision, and how a claiming choice interacts with other household income. The SSA estimates explain your own projected retirement amount; they do not, by themselves, settle every household strategy.
  6. Check Medicare separately. If you are approaching 65, determine whether you need to enroll in Medicare even if you plan to delay Social Security cash benefits. If you have employer coverage, verify Part B timing with the plan administrator.
  7. Compare feasible options, then apply when ready. Narrow the choice to start ages you can afford and that fit your work plans. SSA provides an official retirement application; follow its current instructions when you are ready to claim.

These steps organize the decision; they do not produce a universal break-even age. The SSA sources establish how age adjustments and earnings rules work, but they do not determine the best household choice for an individual. Taxes, pensions, portfolio withdrawals, survivor considerations, and other circumstances can affect the broader plan. If those interactions are consequential or hard to evaluate, consider speaking with a qualified adviser familiar with Social Security and retirement planning.

How your earnings record affects the base benefit

Your claiming-age adjustment is applied to a benefit calculated from your work record. SSA uses your highest 35 years of earnings in the retirement-benefit calculation. If you have fewer than 35 years with earnings, the calculation includes zero-earnings years. As a result, the age at which you claim is only one part of the amount you may ultimately receive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Continuing to work can potentially raise the earnings-based calculation if a new year of earnings replaces a lower year—or a zero year—among the years used. That possibility is not the same as an automatic increase for every additional year of work: whether a year replaces a lower one depends on your existing record. Check your earnings history and estimate before assuming that working longer will change the amount.

Separate two questions when planning: “When should I stop working?” and “When should I start benefits?” A person may stop work and delay benefits, work while receiving benefits, or continue working until claiming. The earnings test may affect payments before FRA, while the 35-year calculation concerns the earnings history used to calculate the benefit.

Working while receiving benefits before full retirement age

If you claim before FRA and keep working, SSA may withhold some benefits when your wages and net self-employment income exceed the applicable annual limit. The limits below are for 2026; they are not permanent figures and should not be reused for a different year without checking SSA’s current rules.

Situation in 2026 Earnings limit Withholding rule
Below FRA for the entire year $24,480 for the year SSA reduces benefits by $1 for every $2 earned above the limit.
Reach FRA during 2026 $65,160, counting only earnings before the month you reach FRA SSA reduces benefits by $1 for every $3 earned above that limit. Starting with the FRA month, earnings do not reduce benefits.

The earnings test is about when you earn the income and when you reach FRA. In the year you reach FRA, do not compare all of your calendar-year earnings with the $65,160 limit: only earnings before your FRA month count for that limit. Beginning in the FRA month, work earnings no longer reduce benefits under this test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Withholding due to excess earnings is not simply a permanent forfeiture of those withheld payments. SSA recalculates the benefit to credit months in which benefits were withheld because of excess earnings. This later adjustment is distinct from the initial reduction for claiming before FRA.

The special first-year monthly rule

SSA also has a special rule that can allow a full benefit for a whole month treated as retired even when annual earnings exceed the usual annual limit. For 2026, the monthly amounts are $2,040 for someone below FRA all year and $5,430 for someone reaching FRA during 2026. These are monthly special-rule thresholds, not replacements for the annual limits.

The rule is relevant when someone retires or sharply reduces work during a year in which annual earnings are high—for example, because earnings earlier in the year were substantial. It is not a blanket exemption for anyone whose annual income exceeds the limit. Whether a month qualifies depends on the special rule’s conditions and the person’s circumstances. Check SSA’s current explanation before relying on it to plan a claim or work schedule.

Keep Medicare enrollment separate from Social Security claiming

Medicare eligibility remains tied to age 65, while FRA can be later. Someone delaying Social Security cash benefits should not assume that delaying the retirement application automatically handles Medicare enrollment. Determine separately whether you need to apply for Medicare as you approach 65.

If you have coverage through an employer, ask the plan administrator how that coverage affects the timing of Medicare Part B enrollment. Do this before the age-65 transition so you understand the applicable enrollment requirements for your coverage. Social Security claiming and Medicare enrollment are related planning milestones, but one does not substitute for checking the other.

Questions to resolve before settling on a start age

  • Can you cover expenses if you wait? Compare your essential spending with other available income during the months or years you would delay. If a delay would leave a cash-flow shortfall, that constraint matters more than a theoretical comparison of monthly amounts.
  • What is the effect of working? Consider both the earnings test before FRA and whether another year of work could improve the 35-year earnings calculation. They are separate mechanisms, and either could matter depending on your record and earnings.
  • How much uncertainty can your plan absorb? Health and longevity are uncertain. Avoid treating a projected break-even point as a guarantee; the choice involves timing, income needs, and risk rather than a universally optimal age.
  • Could a spouse, former spouse, or survivor be affected? The worker’s own estimate does not capture every possible household implication. Investigate how your choice relates to benefits and income available to other family members.
  • Are taxes, pensions, or savings withdrawals part of the decision? The SSA claiming estimate does not resolve how benefits interact with your full retirement-income plan. Include these factors when comparing options, and get qualified help if their interactions are material.
  • Are you approaching 65? Confirm Medicare timing independently, including how employer coverage affects Part B enrollment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating 62 as the default. It is the earliest ordinary claiming age, not a recommendation. Starting then lowers the monthly amount compared with waiting until FRA.
  • Assuming age 65 is full retirement age. FRA depends on birth year; it is 67 for people born in 1960 or later. Medicare eligibility at 65 is a separate milestone.
  • Waiting beyond 70 for a larger age-based benefit. Delayed retirement credits do not increase the benefit beyond age 70.
  • Using an average instead of your estimate. The base calculation depends on your earnings record, and the age adjustment depends on the start date. Compare your own projected amounts.
  • Assuming withheld payments are lost forever. SSA recalculates benefits to credit months withheld under the earnings test.
  • Confusing the work decision with the claim decision. Stopping work does not require you to start benefits immediately, and claiming does not necessarily mean you stop working.
  • Relying on an old earnings limit. The dollar limits change by year. The figures here apply to 2026; confirm current SSA amounts when making a decision for another year.

Where to verify your numbers and next steps

Use the Social Security Administration’s official retirement guidance, personal benefit estimates, and retirement application resources. Confirm your earnings record, compare projected monthly benefits at plausible starting ages, and review the current earnings-test limits if you plan to work before FRA. SSA’s public guidance and tools are available at no cost.

For the age-65 transition, verify Medicare enrollment needs separately and ask an employer-plan administrator about Part B timing if you have employer coverage. If your decision depends on coordination among taxes, pensions, savings, spouse or survivor considerations, and Social Security, the official estimate is an important input rather than a complete household plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age to start Social Security retirement benefits?

There is no universally best age. Compare your personal SSA estimates for plausible start ages with your cash needs, other income, work plans, health and longevity uncertainty, and household considerations. The official rules describe how the monthly amount changes, but they do not identify a best age or break-even point for every person.

What is full retirement age, and is it the same as Medicare age?

Full retirement age depends on your birth year. For people born in 1960 or later, it is 67; check the SSA table for your year of birth, including its note for people born on January 1. Medicare eligibility remains at age 65, so it is a separate milestone.

If I keep working after claiming, will my Social Security payments be reduced?

Before FRA, wages and net self-employment income above the applicable annual earnings limit may lead SSA to withhold benefits. In 2026, the limit is $24,480 for someone below FRA all year, with $1 withheld for every $2 above it. In the year you reach FRA, the $65,160 limit counts only earnings before your FRA month, with $1 withheld for every $3 above it. From the FRA month, earnings do not reduce benefits. SSA recalculates the benefit to credit months withheld for excess earnings.

Should I delay Social Security past age 70?

Delayed retirement credits increase the monthly benefit only through age 70. Waiting beyond 70 does not add another age-based increase, so do not delay solely in expectation of a larger benefit from those credits.

Do I have to claim Social Security to enroll in Medicare at 65?

Social Security cash benefits and Medicare enrollment are separate decisions. If you plan to delay benefits, check whether you need to apply for Medicare separately. If you have employer coverage, ask the plan administrator about Part B timing.

The Bottom Line

Choose a start age by comparing your own SSA estimates with the income you need, work earnings you expect, health and longevity uncertainty, and possible effects on your household. Age 62 is the earliest ordinary start; claiming early can reduce the monthly amount, while delaying raises it only through age 70. Check your birth-year FRA, review current-year earnings-test rules if you work, and handle Medicare timing separately at 65. There is no age that is best for every household.
