How to Tell Whether a Spot Bitcoin ETF Has Net Inflows or Outflows

A positive total in a dated spot Bitcoin ETF flow table indicates net inflows; a negative total indicates net outflows. Check the units, fund coverage, and difference between flows and AUM.

Check a dated spot Bitcoin ETF flow table and read its combined Total column: a positive figure is a net inflow, and a negative figure is a net outflow. Confirm the date, units, and funds included before interpreting the number. For example, Farside Investors’ table reported a $118.8 million net inflow on 6 October 2026, in US millions; that is a dated example, not a current reading. Farside’s Bitcoin ETF Flow table also shows each fund’s result, which can differ from the group total.

How to check a daily spot Bitcoin ETF flow

  1. Open a daily flow tracker, such as Farside Investors’ Bitcoin ETF Flow table.

  2. Find the trading date you want and check the unit printed on the table. Farside labels its figures US$ millions, so a value of 118.8 means $118.8 million.

  3. Read the combined Total column. A positive number means net inflows; a negative number means net outflows. Farside displays negative figures in parentheses.

  4. Look at the individual fund columns to see how the total was composed. A positive total does not mean every fund received inflows.

  5. If you need to rely on a figure, compare it with dated issuer disclosures or filings and note what each source measures. A holdings snapshot is not automatically a flow report.

Farside says its table is generated automatically and disclaims liability for errors or inaccuracies. Treat tracker figures as useful data that may need verification, especially if a consequential decision depends on them. Farside Investors

What “net flow” measures

A net flow summarizes creations of fund shares minus redemptions over a trading session. When creations exceed redemptions, the net is positive; when redemptions exceed creations, it is negative. This is fund-level creation and redemption activity—not the ETF’s exchange trading volume and not a count of every investor purchase or sale. ETF shares can change hands between investors without the fund creating or redeeming shares. The flow figure is therefore a net measure of activity through the fund mechanism, not a tally of all market trading.

Why ETF flow is different from AUM and Bitcoin price

Assets under management (AUM) is the value of a fund’s assets at a point in time. Flow is net creation and redemption activity over a period. AUM can rise or fall as Bitcoin’s market price moves even when creations and redemptions are flat, so subtracting two AUM snapshots does not establish net flow.

Issuer holdings pages may show the amount of Bitcoin held and a calculated market value. BlackRock notes that public holdings data may differ from the accounting book used to determine net assets. Use a flow series to answer a flow question, and check the issuer’s description of the basis for any holdings or value figure. BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust product page

Read the group total alongside fund-level results

The group total is the sum of the funds included in the tracker. Individual funds can move in opposite directions: one may have inflows while another has outflows, leaving the group total positive, negative, or near zero. The total describes the included group, not every spot Bitcoin product everywhere.

Farside’s table currently lists IBIT, FBTC, BITB, ARKB, BTCO, EZBC, BRRR, HODL, BTCW, MSBT, GBTC, and BTC. Check the page’s current ticker coverage before comparing totals with another tracker or with a different date; coverage can affect whether two totals are comparable. A dated example: 6 October 2026

Farside’s table showed a $118.8 million net inflow for 6 October 2026. Its figures are in US millions: IBIT recorded $122.0 million in inflows and MSBT $7.8 million, while BTC recorded an $11.0 million outflow. Those listed amounts sum to the displayed group total. The example was checked on 7 October 2026; daily figures are volatile and may be corrected, so it should not be treated as a current reading after that date. Farside Investors

For historical context, CoinGecko’s 2024 annual report reported $35.2 billion in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF net inflows during 2024 and $106.6 billion in total AUM at year end. The report’s flow chart credits Farside Investors and The Block. These are annual historical figures, not a substitute for checking a particular day’s flow. CoinGecko 2024 Annual Crypto Report

How to compare flow sources

Before comparing trackers, check that they refer to the same date and use the same conventions. Pay attention to:

Issuer pages provide dated fund and holdings information, while SEC filings explain fund operations. They can help check a tracker, but they do not necessarily publish the same measure or use the same accounting basis. A holdings snapshot should not be read as a daily net-flow table.

What flows can—and cannot—tell you

A net flow tells you what creations and redemptions netted to for the funds and period covered. By itself, it does not establish why investors traded, whether activity reflects long-term conviction, or where Bitcoin’s price will go next. Treat it as descriptive information about past fund activity, not as a stand-alone price prediction or investment recommendation.
