To track Sensex or Nifty movements without a stream of stock news, set a small number of notification-only alerts in a broker app that supports the exact index you want. Choose a level or percentage condition for a clear monitoring purpose, confirm where notifications will arrive, and check that the alert will not place an order. Alert features, limits and expiry vary by provider.
Set up an index alert in the app you already use
- Find the exact index instrument. Search for “Sensex” or the intended Nifty index in your broker’s app or web platform. A platform may list multiple indices or related instruments, so confirm the name before creating an alert.
- Choose a condition with a defined purpose. Depending on the platform, you may be able to set an absolute price level or a percentage move. Decide what information you want the notification to provide, name the alert clearly, and start with only alerts you have a reason to receive. There is no established optimal threshold or alert count.
- Select notification-only behavior and check delivery. Confirm whether the alert appears in the app, arrives by email, or uses another channel. Do not assume every provider supports the same channels or conditions.
- Review the alert type before saving. Make sure you have selected a notification rather than a feature that can trigger an order.
- Check expiry and delivery settings later. Alerts may expire or be subject to provider-specific limits. Review them periodically, especially if a notification stops arriving or a saved condition is no longer listed.

When comparing apps, check the exact index, available conditions, delivery channel, whether the feature only notifies or can submit an order, and any limit or expiry. To verify a broker app, SEBI Investor links to exchange lists of authorised intermediary apps.
Do not confuse index notifications with transaction alerts
NSE’s trade-alert facility sends SMS or email to retail investors about their trades conducted on NSE, after market hours. SEBI Investor also describes free SMS and email alerts for trading or demat account transaction activity. Those messages concern activity in an account; they do not tell you that Sensex or Nifty has crossed a level you selected. For that, you need a configured index-movement alert.

Keep a notification from becoming a trading signal
An index alert reports that a condition occurred; by itself, it is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Before saving one, decide what information it is meant to give you. When it arrives, consider the wider context before acting rather than treating the threshold as an instruction. This is a practical way to use alerts deliberately, not a claim that a particular number of alerts or threshold has been proven to prevent overreaction.
