Yes—you can take Amtrak’s Empire Builder to Glacier National Park, but the train does not deliver you to every hotel, trailhead, or park shuttle. The key decision is which Glacier-area station fits your itinerary and how you will get from that station to your lodging and around the park. West Glacier is the best-documented option for a car-free west-side visit: in summer, Glacier National Park Lodges runs a fee-based shuttle from the depot to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald Lodge, with reservations required.
Can you take Amtrak to Glacier National Park?
The Empire Builder stops in the Glacier area. Amtrak’s timetable accessed October 7, 2026 lists the route as daily and includes West Glacier (Belton), Essex, and East Glacier Park; East Glacier Park is a seasonal stop, while West Glacier and Essex are year-round. Train schedules vary by direction and travel date, so check the official timetable for your specific trip rather than relying on a time printed in a static guide. Amtrak timetables.
A station stop is not, by itself, a connection to a park entrance or trailhead. Before booking, confirm how you will reach your lodging and destinations from the station, and whether the transfer operates on your travel dates.
Which Amtrak stop is best for Glacier National Park?
| Station | Train service | Documented onward connection | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| West Glacier (Belton) | Year-round | In summer, Glacier National Park Lodges offers a fee-based shuttle between the depot, Apgar Village, and Lake McDonald Lodge; reservations are required. | Travelers planning a west-side stay near the shuttle route. |
| East Glacier Park | Seasonal; check the timetable for the travel date. | No equivalent station transfer is documented in the reviewed National Park Service information. | Travelers with east-side lodging and local transportation arranged in advance. |
| Essex | Year-round | No park transfer is documented in the reviewed National Park Service information. | Only if you have separately confirmed lodging and transportation from the station. |
The West Glacier shuttle is not a general, year-round park transit service. Verify that it is operating on your dates, what it currently costs, and whether its stops work for your lodging or planned visit. The National Park Service’s public transportation information describes the seasonal connection; future-season dates and prices are not established here.

How do you get from the West Glacier train station into the park?
- Choose lodging that matches your arrival. If you plan to use the seasonal station shuttle, check whether your lodging is at Apgar Village, Lake McDonald Lodge, or otherwise reachable from those stops.
- Confirm shuttle service for your travel date. Contact Glacier National Park Lodges and verify operating dates, the current route, fare, reservation process, and schedule. NPS says reservations are required; do not assume the service operates every day or in every season.
- Plan local transportation beyond the shuttle route. The station shuttle does not provide comprehensive door-to-door transportation to every lodging, trailhead, or park area. Arrange any additional rides before relying on a car-free itinerary.
- Check the train timetable for your direction and date. Leave enough time for the transfer and account for the possibility that rail and local transportation schedules may not align.
Can you visit Glacier without a car?
It is possible to plan a visit around the train and seasonal transportation, but it requires more advance coordination than simply arriving at a station. The West Glacier depot shuttle provides a documented link to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald Lodge when it is operating. Park shuttles may serve selected locations during limited seasonal windows; they are not a substitute for comprehensive transportation across the park or to all accommodations.
A rental car offers more flexibility for reaching different park areas and adjusting plans, but it does not remove seasonal road limits, parking rules, or weather-related closures. The practical choice depends on where you are staying, which places you want to visit, and whether the available connections match your dates.

Understand the distances and seasonal limits
Glacier is large enough that a one-sided itinerary and a cross-park trip are very different plans. NPS estimates the drive from West Glacier to St. Mary at 50 miles and 2 to 2½ hours via Going-to-the-Sun Road, or 90 miles and 2 to 2½ hours via U.S. Highway 2 and Highway 89. These are approximate driving estimates, not train-to-train transfer times; they exclude shuttle waits and stops, and road access depends on conditions and season. See the NPS directions and distance information.
Going-to-the-Sun Road and park transportation change with the season. NPS notes that snow and avalanche conditions affect when the road opens, while hazardous snow can keep popular trails such as Highline closed even after road access begins. Check current road, trail, weather, and transportation information shortly before travel.

What the 2026 Logan Pass shuttle rules meant
The following details apply to the 2026 season only; they should not be treated as rules for a later year. NPS listed the Logan Pass pilot shuttle as operating July 1 through September 7, 2026. It required a ticket for a specific date, time, and boarding location, obtained through Recreation.gov, and each passenger age two and older needed a ticket. The shuttle was for same-day day use, not overnight trips. Consult the NPS shuttle page for the applicable season’s rules.
- West-side boarding locations included Apgar Visitor Center and Lake McDonald Lodge.
- East-side boarding locations included St. Mary Visitor Center and Rising Sun Picnic Area.
- Service to Logan Pass was express, with limited stops that included The Loop at designated times.
- For the 2026 schedule, the last departures were listed as 7:30 p.m. to the west and 8:00 p.m. to the east. NPS described times as approximate and subject to delay from weather, road conditions, or wildlife.
- NPS warned there was no other public transportation to return visitors to a parked vehicle after the final Logan Pass shuttle.
For 2026, Logan Pass parking was limited to three hours from July 1 through September 7, weather permitting. NPS also said vehicle reservations were not required anywhere in the park in 2026. Those statements describe that season only, not a guarantee for future travel. The 2026 shuttle ticket carried a $1 processing fee per ticket; that was not a park entrance fee. See the NPS 2026 vehicle-reservation announcement.

Build a trip around your dates, not a static schedule
- Check Amtrak’s timetable for the exact date, station, and direction.
- Confirm station-to-lodging transportation and reserve any required transfer.
- Review park shuttle rules, road status, trail openings, and weather for the year you are traveling.
- Allow time for delays and avoid an itinerary that depends on catching a final shuttle without a backup plan.
- If hiking, bring a comfortable daypack with room for your personal essentials and weather layers; conditions can change quickly.
Because transportation, road access, and trail conditions vary, verify details through the NPS current conditions page close to departure.
