Store your Zcash recovery phrase offline, privately, and in a place only you can access. Never enter it into a website, send it in a message, email it, or save it in a screenshot or cloud note. Most importantly, follow the backup and restore instructions for the specific wallet you use: Zcash wallets do not all use interchangeable recovery formats, and a private-key export may not restore a wallet’s full state.
What a Zcash recovery phrase protects
A wallet holds keys that control your ZEC. In a hierarchical deterministic wallet, a seed can derive multiple addresses, so preserving the seed may be necessary to recover addresses created after the original backup. Zcash’s ZIP 32 standard requires a seed with at least 256 bits of entropy for Zcash purposes: ZIP 32: Shielded Hierarchical Deterministic Wallets.

A phrase is not automatically compatible with every wallet just because it has familiar-looking words. ZIP 315 says a 24-word BIP 39 mnemonic is needed when generating a phrase to meet ZIP 32’s entropy requirement; wallet implementations and recovery procedures can still differ. Check your wallet’s documentation rather than trying a phrase in an unrelated wallet: ZIP 315: Best Practices for Wallet Implementations.

- Write it down offline. Use the backup method specified by your wallet. Keep the words in their exact order and spelling, and check the written copy carefully.
- Keep the record private and access-controlled. Store it where visitors, household members who should not have access, and anyone who might find or photograph it cannot casually reach it. A physical backup should be protected from loss and unauthorized access.
- Do not make casual digital copies. Avoid screenshots, photos, email drafts, text messages, password-free files, cloud notes, and web forms. Trezor’s recovery-card instructions warn: “Never share your wallet backup anywhere, especially online!” Trezor seed card instructions.
- Do not reveal it to support or another person. Treat any request to disclose the phrase as a request for control of the wallet. Legitimate troubleshooting should use the wallet provider’s documented recovery process, not ask you to send the secret.
- Keep wallet-identifying notes separate from the secret. It can help to record which wallet and setup the backup belongs to, but do not leave that information with the phrase in an exposed location.
A metal seed phrase backup plate is one possible way to make an offline physical record. It is an optional storage format, not a guarantee against theft, loss, or environmental damage; the cited sources do not establish that any particular plate resists fire or water.

How to back up a Zcash wallet
Start with the instructions for the wallet that currently holds your funds. The Zcash documentation’s backup commands apply specifically to zcashd; it directs users of third-party wallets to those wallets’ own guides or support channels. Do not assume a generic seed phrase, key export, or wallet file can substitute for another wallet’s backup procedure.
For zcashd: prefer a whole-wallet backup for a full restore
The zcashd Wallet Backup Instructions describe backing up the complete wallet.dat, exporting private keys for addresses, or exporting a single private key. The documentation calls the whole-wallet backup the easiest option and points to it for a full restore that includes the Sapling HD seed.

Timing matters: a backup made before new addresses are generated may not reflect those addresses. The documentation explains that HD Sapling addresses can be regenerated in sequence from a wallet backup, followed by a rescan. Keep backups current according to the wallet’s instructions and ensure you understand how its restore procedure finds later activity.
Why a private-key export is not the same as a full backup
The same zcashd documentation says z_importwallet imports exported keys but does not currently import HD seeds. Imported Sapling addresses are treated as standard non-HD keys. An exported key file therefore should not be treated as a complete replacement for the whole-wallet backup when you need the HD wallet’s seed and address-generation behavior.

Protect the wallet data as well as the phrase
An offline phrase and the wallet data on a computer are separate security concerns. Zcash’s Privacy Recommendations and Best Practices says zcashd wallet encryption is disabled and recommends full-disk or home-directory encryption, regular backups, and controlled access to the machine and wallet environment. These recommendations are specific to zcashd; consult the security guidance for other wallet apps rather than assuming they use the same protections.

- Maintain backups using the wallet’s documented procedure, and protect the backup files as sensitive material.
Choose a wallet with recovery and privacy needs in mind
Zcash materials describe hardware, mobile, and desktop wallet categories. If transaction confidentiality is a priority, Zcash advises choosing a wallet that is shielded by default; that feature choice does not protect a recovery phrase from disclosure or theft. Before relying on a wallet or device, check its current official documentation for these specific points:

- Whether shielded use is supported and enabled by default.
- Whether you control the keys or the service holds them for you.
- Which seed format and derivation setup it uses, and how recovery works.
- Whether a hardware wallet supports the exact Zcash features you need.
- Whether you can create and maintain an offline backup safely.

If you think your phrase was exposed
Do not enter the phrase into another website or send it to someone offering to help. Use the wallet provider’s official recovery instructions to assess the situation and move funds to a wallet with a new recovery setup if the provider’s guidance indicates the secret may be compromised. Because recovery and migration steps vary by wallet, do not improvise with an unverified app or assume importing exported keys restores the complete wallet.
