Choose storage to suit each item: wind outdoor lights onto a reel or another support, pack inflatables and large yard décor in a lidded bin or suitable durable bag, and protect wreaths in a bag or container that will not crush them. Before putting anything away, make sure it is clean and dry; inspect light strands and discard those with damaged cords. Measure both the décor and your available storage space before choosing a container.
Choose storage by the kind of décor
The best option is the one that fits the item, protects its shape or components, and can be stored safely in your available space. The December 2021 Real Christmas Tree Board guide recommends reels for extra outdoor-light yardage; current item-specific guidance from Home Depot, updated September 23, 2026, and Lowe’s, updated May 23, 2025, also covers trees, wreaths, lights, ornaments, and yard displays. These are practical storage options, not a tested product ranking.

Store outdoor lights without tangles—or electrical damage
Wind each strand around a reel or another suitable support so it stays organized. A reel is optional: the 2021 Real Christmas Tree Board guide specifically mentions reels for extra outdoor-light yardage, while Lowe’s also describes winding supports as an option. Keep the wound lights in a dry place, and label the strand or its container so you can identify it next season.
Inspect before packing
Check each strand before putting it away. The U.S. Fire Administration’s Holiday Fire Safety guidance, reviewed October 7, 2026, says to inspect lights each year and throw away strands with frayed or pinched wires. Lowe’s also advises discarding strings with broken or frayed cords. Do not store a damaged strand for later use.

When you reinstall lights, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many strands may be connected. The U.S. Fire Administration page attributes this statistic to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA): “Almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.” The page does not state the statistic’s publication year.
Protect inflatables and large yard displays
Pack inflatables and other bulky yard décor only after they are dry. Use the original packaging if it remains practical, or choose a lidded bin or suitable durable bag that fits the packed item without forcing it. Keep the item’s cords and instructions with it so they do not get separated before next season. Keep wreaths and fragile pieces in shape
Use a wreath bag or container sized for the wreath’s diameter and decorative bulk. The goal is to keep out dust and moisture without putting pressure on the wreath. Avoid stacking items on top of it or placing it where its shape can be crushed. For smaller fragile décor, retain original boxes and dividers where possible; otherwise, use padding in a container to limit shifting and contact between pieces.
