The fix depends on which payment flow is charging you. For Apple Pay checkout, change the default card in Wallet or choose another card during checkout. For App Store purchases and Apple subscriptions billed to your Apple Account, change the payment methods under Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping. These are separate settings.
First, identify which payment setting is in use
- The screen shows Apple Pay or Wallet: change the Wallet default card or select a different card at checkout. This is the relevant route for an Apple Store order paid with Apple Pay.
- The charge is for an App Store purchase or Apple subscription: update the payment methods associated with your Apple Account. Apple says these are used for media purchases and services.
Apple Pay uses a default card stored in Wallet on a device. Apple Account billing methods are managed separately, so changing one does not change the other.

Change the default card for Apple Pay
On iPhone
- Open the Wallet app.
- Touch and hold the card you want to use.
- Drag it in front of the other cards.
Apple Support says, “The first payment card that you add to Apple Wallet on a device becomes your default card for that device.” Moving another card to the front changes that device’s default. Apple’s instructions for changing Apple Pay cards

- Apple Watch: manage the default in the Watch app’s Wallet & Apple Pay settings.
- Mac with Touch ID: open System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions) and choose Wallet & Apple Pay.
- iPad or Vision Pro: open Wallet & Apple Pay settings.
Labels and paths can vary with the operating-system version.

Choose a different card during checkout
- At Apple Pay checkout, tap Change Payment Method or Other Cards & Pay Later Options, depending on what appears.
- Select the card you want to use.
- If offered, choose Set as Default Card to make it the default.
This option lets you switch cards during a purchase without first changing Wallet settings. Apple’s Apple Pay card guidance
Change the payment method for Apple Account purchases and services
On iPhone, iPad, or Vision Pro
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Payment & Shipping.
- Add another payment method or update an existing one.

On Mac or Windows
On Mac, manage payment methods through your App Store account settings. On Windows, Apple documents account payment management in the Apple Music or Apple TV app. Available payment methods vary by country or region; see Apple’s country- and region-dependent payment-method information.

If you want to stop using Apple Card entirely, add a replacement payment method first, then try removing Apple Card from the account. Apple may require at least one payment method to remain on file when you have certain active subscriptions, an unpaid balance, or Family Sharing purchase sharing.
