How to Start Affiliate Marketing With No Money

A no-cost start is possible if you use a suitable free publishing channel, create original content, follow program rules, and disclose affiliate relationships clearly. It is not a promise of quick or guaranteed earnings.

You can start affiliate marketing without paying for ads or a website right away: choose a subject you can cover responsibly, publish useful original content on a free channel, and add relevant affiliate links only when they help readers. “No money” does not mean no work, guaranteed approval, or quick earnings. You still need to create content, follow program and platform rules, and earn an audience’s trust.

What “starting with no money” means

A no-cost start is about deferring expenses, not eliminating the work. You can begin on a suitable free publishing channel rather than buying ads or paying for web hosting immediately. A website can cost money to create and maintain, and free services set their own rules and limits. Check whether a channel is public, allows the links you plan to use, and meets the affiliate program’s requirements before building your approach around it. Shopify’s beginner overview notes that creating a website can involve costs.

How to start affiliate marketing step by step

  1. Choose a focused subject you can serve. Pick an area where you can answer real questions accurately and keep publishing helpful material. A high advertised commission is not a reason to promote something that does not fit your audience.
  2. Choose one publishing channel you can maintain. A public social account or another free publishing option can let you begin without a paid website. Review the channel’s current rules for commercial links and disclosures; do not assume every service permits every link format or offers a permanent, searchable web presence.
  3. Publish useful original content before emphasizing links. Explain a task, answer a question, or compare approaches. For Amazon Associates, Amazon says robust original content matters and describes at least 10 posts as a good rule of thumb for its application review. That is Amazon-specific guidance, not a universal threshold for affiliate programs. Check Amazon’s current application requirements.
  4. Find a program that fits your audience and check its terms. Amazon Associates is one option for content creators, publishers, and bloggers. Programs differ in eligibility, qualifying actions, commission rates, and payout rules, so read the current terms of any program you consider rather than assuming Amazon’s rules apply elsewhere. Amazon explains its commission structure.
  5. Add offers only when they help answer the reader’s question. Explain what the offer does and any material limitations. Keep claims truthful and evidence-based; do not imply that you personally tested a product or service unless you did. The FTC says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and supported by evidence. FTC guidance on advertising and marketing.
  6. Disclose the relationship clearly. Put a plain-language disclosure where readers will notice it, near the relevant endorsement or link. Amazon also has additional disclosure requirements; see the next section.
  7. Learn from what readers use. Improve content based on audience response and the questions people ask. Do not treat a few clicks or an early commission as evidence of a reliable income stream.

What Amazon Associates requires from applicants

Amazon’s current application guidance, accessed in 2026, says it reviews an application after the applicant has driven at least three qualifying sales within 180 days; personal orders do not count. Amazon also says content must be public rather than closed or behind a paywall. Its guidance describes at least 10 posts as a good rule of thumb for robust original content, says website content should generally be recent—within the last 60 days—and says eligible social network pages should be established with a substantive number of organic followers or likes, in most cases at least 500. These are Amazon-specific application details and can change, so check the live requirements before applying. Amazon Associates application guidance.

Amazon says commissions are earned on qualifying purchases and program actions, with earnings varying by product category. Its program overview says payment is made approximately 60 days after the end of the month in which income was earned. That describes Amazon’s payment timing, not a promise of a particular commission or income. Amazon Associates program overview and rates.

How to disclose affiliate links

In the United States, the FTC says to disclose your relationship with a retailer clearly and conspicuously so readers can decide how much weight to give your endorsement. It gives this example: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” Place the disclosure where readers will see it in context, not somewhere they have to search for it. FTC disclosure guidance for social media influencers.

Amazon separately requires a clear, conspicuous disclosure near the link or review, with examples including “(paid link),” “#ad,” and “#CommissionsEarned.” It also requires the Associate identification statement: “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” For social user-generated content, Amazon says that statement must be associated with the account. Follow the current program and platform rules, and check the law that applies where you publish and where your audience is located. Amazon’s disclosure requirements.

Do you need a website, and can you use social media?

You do not necessarily need to pay for a website before getting started. A free public channel can be a practical first step if it permits affiliate links, gives you a way to publish useful original material, and meets the program’s eligibility rules. Social media is not automatically sufficient: Amazon’s current guidance, for example, expects an eligible social page to be established and, in most cases, have at least 500 organic followers or likes. Other programs and platforms may set different conditions. Check both sets of rules before posting links.

How long does it take to make money?

The available program guidance does not establish a typical beginner income, conversion rate, or time to a first commission. Amazon’s qualifying-sales threshold is an application-review condition, not an earnings forecast. Revenue depends on whether people find and trust your content, whether an offer fits their needs, and whether qualifying purchases or actions occur. Treat any promised income or schedule with skepticism unless it is backed by reliable evidence.
