You can start vlogging with a phone and a clear idea; you do not need expensive equipment or a large audience to publish your first episode. Making money is less predictable: on YouTube, full ad-revenue sharing requires 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days, followed by a channel review. Other routes include memberships, Supers, sponsorships, and eligible Shopping features, but access and earnings vary.
How do I start a vlog?
Choose a specific viewer and a repeatable premise: what will that person get from each episode, and why can you keep making it? A vlog could document a learning process, explain a subject, or follow a project. The premise should leave room for distinct episodes rather than encourage near-identical uploads.
This is a practical starting point, not a guaranteed growth formula. YouTube says monetized channels should publish original and authentic content; repetitive, generic, or mass-produced videos may be ineligible. Its reviewers can consider the channel’s overall theme, popular and newest videos, share of watch time, metadata, and About section. YouTube’s policy puts the originality test plainly: “Be your original creation. If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own.” Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
A simple first-episode workflow
- Pick the viewer and premise. Write one sentence describing who the vlog is for and what each episode will deliver.
- Plan a few distinct episodes. Outline several ideas before filming so you can see whether the premise has enough variety.
- Record with what you have. A phone or camera you already own is enough to begin. Aim for clear visuals and understandable speech; consider a microphone only if your current setup makes audio difficult to hear.
- Edit for a coherent story. Remove distracting pauses and material that does not serve the episode. Use footage or music you have rights to use.
- Publish accurately. Give the video a title and description that match what it contains. Avoid misleading metadata or promises the episode does not fulfill.
- Review audience response in YouTube Studio. Use what viewers respond to as input for the next episode, while keeping the channel’s premise and originality intact.
What equipment do you need to start vlogging?
There is no required camera or microphone model established here. Start with equipment you can use reliably, then address a specific production problem rather than buying a full kit. If viewers cannot understand speech because of room noise or distance, a compatible microphone may help. A phone mount or tripod can steady a static shot; lighting can help when the subject is too dark. These are optional tools, not prerequisites for starting.

Before buying, check compatibility with your phone or camera and consider where you will record. A microphone that does not suit your device or surroundings may not solve the problem you have. No particular product has been tested or shown to be necessary.
How do vloggers make money?
Vloggers may earn from platform monetization, audience support, branded content, or product-related programs. On YouTube, access depends on the feature, channel, and location; check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio for the options currently available to your account.

- Audience support: YPP features include channel memberships and Supers, subject to eligibility and availability.
- Brand deals: A company may pay for a sponsorship or other branded content. Use YouTube Studio’s paid-promotion declaration when required by the platform, and make disclosures clear and prominent. - Shopping and product referrals: Eligible creators may be able to tag products through YouTube Shopping. The program and country eligibility can change, so check the current rules rather than assuming you can enroll.
YouTube announced on September 23, 2026, that more than 1.3 million creators participate in its Shopping affiliate program and that its program’s gross merchandise volume grew 13 times over the previous two years. Those are YouTube-reported figures about the program overall, not a forecast of what a new vlogger can earn. How many subscribers do you need to make money on YouTube?
For the full ad-revenue-sharing eligibility paths in YouTube’s YPP overview, a channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus one of two qualifying audience thresholds. The two routes use different formats and measurement windows:

Other YPP requirements
Audience numbers are only part of eligibility. YouTube also requires policy compliance and availability in an eligible location. Its overview lists requirements that include having no active Community Guidelines strikes, enabling 2-Step Verification, having access to advanced features, and linking or setting up an AdSense for YouTube account. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole using automated systems and human reviewers.
Can you make money vlogging without a big audience?
You can pursue routes other than full YouTube ad-revenue sharing, such as sponsorships or product-related programs, but access and results depend on your audience, offer, location, and the relevant program’s terms. The sources cited here do not establish a typical beginner income, a time to monetization, or a minimum audience for a successful deal. Treat income as uncertain, not as a predictable return on equipment or time.

Do not confuse a platform-wide participation figure or growth statistic with an individual creator’s likely earnings. No amount, schedule, or subscriber-to-income conversion is assured.

Passing the audience threshold is not enough if the channel does not meet YouTube’s other requirements or its content policies. Originality matters at channel level: uploads that feel interchangeable, generic, manipulative, or mass-produced can put eligibility at risk. Copyright rules and advertiser-friendly content policies can also limit revenue on individual videos. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies before building a format around reused material.
