A message or call claiming your Social Security benefits are at risk is not proof that anything is wrong. Scammers impersonate Social Security and other government agencies by phone, text, email, letter, social media and fake websites. They may threaten to stop benefits, claim your Social Security number will be suspended, or offer to protect your money. Don’t click a link, call a number, share information or move money because of an unexpected contact. End the exchange and verify the claim independently through my Social Security or an official contact channel.
Recognize how a Social Security scam works
An impersonation scam starts with a false claim designed to make you act before you can check it. The contact may appear to come from the Social Security Administration (SSA), the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), a bank or another government agency. A scammer might say your benefits will end, your Social Security number (SSN) will be suspended, there is a problem with your account or bank, or you must take action to receive a benefit increase. SSA and OIG warn that scammers use calls, texts, emails, letters, social media and websites to seek money or personal information. SSA and OIG’s scam guidance describes these approaches.

The contact can look convincing. A caller can spoof caller ID, give a real employee’s name, display a fake badge, or send an official-looking letter. A person may also know details about you or your account. None of those details proves the contact is genuine. Treat the claim as unverified until you have checked it through a channel you found independently.
Common tactics and what to do
| What the contact says or does | Why to pause | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Threatens to stop benefits, suspend your SSN or arrest you unless you act immediately. | Urgency and threats are used to prevent independent verification. | End the contact. Check your account or contact SSA through an independently located official channel. |
| Asks unexpectedly for your SSN, bank details, account credentials or a verification code. | The request may expose personal information or give someone access to an account. | Do not provide it in response to the contact. Verify the reason for any requested action through SSA’s official site or number. |
| Says a bank or government office can protect your money if you transfer it. | A supposed helper may be steering you to move funds into a scammer-controlled destination. | Do not transfer funds or follow the caller’s instructions. Call your bank using the number on your card or statement. |
| Demands payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, payment app, cash or another hard-to-trace method. | Government agencies do not demand payment in these ways, according to SSA’s scam guidance. | Do not pay, load a barcode or share account access. Stop the exchange and report the attempt. |
| Asks you to keep the conversation secret or stay on the phone while you act. | Isolation can prevent you from asking a trusted person or checking the story. | End the call or conversation. Take time to verify the claim independently. |
The SSA OIG has warned about a particularly manipulative version of the money-transfer tactic: a supposed bank or government employee claims there is fraud, offers to protect your funds and guides you through a transfer, sometimes while keeping you on a call. OIG says the government will not help you move money to protect it. If the story involves your bank, contact the bank directly using a trusted number. OIG’s September 14, 2026 alert explains this scheme.

Be especially cautious if the person tries to keep you from pausing to think, checking with someone you trust or ending the call. They may present a transfer as temporary, tell you to withdraw cash, or direct you to a payment service or location. The exact story can change; the warning sign is the instruction to move or hand over your own money to protect it. Do not load a barcode, disclose a one-time code or let the caller guide you through banking screens. A familiar name, number or account detail does not make those instructions safe.
Verify a contact without relying on it
Do not use the link, callback number or instructions in an unexpected message to confirm that same message. Instead, end the exchange and navigate to SSA’s website yourself or find the agency’s published contact information independently. You can use my Social Security to check account information. If the contact claims there is a bank problem, call the bank using the number printed on your card or statement. These precautions apply even when caller ID appears authentic or the person already knows personal details. SSA’s scam guidance advises people to be cautious with unexpected requests and verify claims through official channels.
This does not mean that every genuine SSA contact must be initiated by you. The practical rule is narrower: treat an unexpected request for personal details, bank information or money as unverified, and check it independently before taking action. Do not let a caller’s urgency determine how you handle your benefits or finances.

- Stop the interaction. Do not argue, confirm personal details, follow instructions or stay on the line while the other person directs your actions.
- Do not click or call back through the message. Close the message or webpage, and avoid numbers, links, QR codes or payment instructions it supplies.
- Find a trusted route yourself. Type ssa.gov/myaccount into your browser or locate SSA’s published contact information independently. For a claimed bank issue, use the bank’s number on your card or statement.
- Check the claim, not the caller’s story. Review your account information or ask the agency through the independently verified channel whether action is needed.
- Do not move money or share access while checking. A genuine concern can be reviewed without following an unsolicited caller’s transfer instructions.
If you are helping a parent, partner or other family member manage benefits, follow the same routine together. Encourage them to end unexpected calls and reach you or another trusted person using a number they already know, rather than staying on the line with someone directing a financial decision. Do not take the caller’s word that a relative must keep the matter secret. When checking an account, use the official SSA service rather than a link forwarded in a text or email.
Protect your Social Security account and information
A personal my Social Security account lets you access information and manage benefits through SSA rather than relying on an unsolicited contact. SSA says account access can help you monitor your information and notice suspicious activity. Use the official SSA site to reach the service, and do not sign in through a link sent by someone you have not verified.
Make a habit of checking account information through that independently reached service, particularly if you receive an unexpected claim about benefit status or direct deposit. If you see a change you do not recognize, contact SSA through a channel you independently locate. A scam message itself is not proof that your SSA account has been accessed or that benefits have changed; verify what is actually on the account.

Keep your SSN private, particularly when someone contacts you unexpectedly. If you think account credentials were exposed, change the affected password to a strong, unique password and use official SSA channels for account changes. Do not give another person account access or a sign-in code because they say they need it to protect your benefits. SSA’s August 31, 2026 OIG alert on protecting your SSN discusses unexpected requests for this information.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Understand SSA’s account blocks before requesting one
SSA’s Fraud Prevention and Reporting page describes two blocks that restrict specific ways of accessing or changing information:
- eServices block: prevents online viewing or changing of personal information.
- Direct Deposit Fraud Prevention block: prevents direct-deposit enrollment or changes through specified online and financial-institution routes.
These are account controls, not a substitute for checking whether a contact is genuine. Review SSA’s current instructions and the effects on how you can manage your account before requesting either block. The restrictions may affect legitimate access or direct-deposit changes, so make the decision using SSA’s published information rather than a caller’s directions.
In particular, understand what an online-access restriction means for your own routine before placing a block: the eServices block prevents online viewing or changing of personal information. The Direct Deposit Fraud Prevention block restricts enrollment or changes through the online and financial-institution routes specified by SSA. These blocks have different effects, so do not assume one is interchangeable with the other or that either prevents every kind of fraud. Consult SSA’s current instructions for the request process and for how to manage legitimate changes afterward.
If you shared information or sent money
Act promptly, but do not assume a payment can be reversed. Stop talking to the suspected scammer and block the contact. If money was sent or a transfer is in progress, contact the bank or payment provider as soon as possible using a number or channel you independently verify. Explain what happened and ask what steps may still be available. If money was stolen, SSA’s scam guidance recommends reporting the crime to local police. SSA’s scam resource also points people to the FTC’s recovery guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not rely on a phone number the suspected scammer gave you, and do not pay someone who contacts you afterward claiming they can recover the money for an advance fee. Keep messages, transfer records and other details that may help you explain what happened when reporting it. The provider can explain what options exist, but a reversal is not guaranteed.

If you exposed account credentials
- Change the exposed password, and change it anywhere else you reused it.
- Use the official site or app for the affected account, not a link from the suspicious contact.
- Check your my Social Security account for information or changes you do not recognize.
- If you cannot access an affected account or see an unauthorized change, contact the relevant organization through its independently verified channel.
If you shared a sign-in or verification code, tell the organization whose account it was intended to protect when you contact it. Change the password through the official service and check for unfamiliar activity. Do not keep responding to the original contact to ask whether the account is safe; verify directly with the organization.
If you exposed personal information
Exposure and identity theft are not the same thing. If your SSN was exposed but has not been misused, SSA says you do not need to file an FTC identity-theft report solely because of that exposure. Take protective steps, watch for signs of misuse and use the appropriate reporting route if you discover that someone used your information.
If you find that someone used your information to obtain a loan, get a job, claim a tax refund or conduct other business, use IdentityTheft.gov for identity-theft reporting and a recovery plan. SSA also recommends contacting the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert. See SSA’s fraud-prevention guidance for its current advice.
A fraud alert is a step to take when you are concerned about possible misuse; it is not the same as reporting a scam contact to SSA OIG. Keep those purposes separate: an impersonation attempt belongs in the scam-reporting channel, while confirmed misuse of personal information calls for identity-theft recovery steps. If the only thing that happened is exposure and you have no indication of misuse, SSA’s guidance distinguishes that from established identity theft.
Report the incident to the right place
The right reporting route depends on what happened. Reporting an impersonation attempt is different from reporting suspected fraud, waste or abuse involving Social Security or SSI program operations.
| What you need to report | Where to start | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| A person or message impersonating Social Security or claiming to be from SSA. | SSA’s scam resource, which routes reports to the Office of the Inspector General. | Use this route for Social Security-related scam attempts, including ones where you did not lose money. |
| Government impersonation or another type of scam. | FTC ReportFraud.ftc.gov. | The FTC accepts reports of scams and government impersonation. SSA’s scam page lists FTC phone and interpreter information for people who need language assistance. |
| Suspected fraud, waste or abuse involving Social Security, SSI or Medicare program operations. | SSA OIG’s reporting instructions. | This is for suspected program-related wrongdoing, rather than simply an impersonation attempt. SSA’s FAQ, updated August 11, 2026, lists the OIG hotline as 1-800-269-0271 (TTY 1-866-501-2101), available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. Fax and mail options are also listed there. |
| Identity theft in which your information was used to conduct business. | IdentityTheft.gov. | Use it to report identity theft and get a recovery plan when personal information has been misused. |
You can report an impersonation even if you are not sure whether the contact succeeded in taking information or money. If you did lose money, separately contact the bank or payment provider and consider reporting the theft to local police; submitting an agency report does not replace those immediate steps.

For suspected program fraud, use the OIG route rather than treating the hotline as a general-purpose way to check an unexpected call. The hotline hours and contact options are listed in SSA’s FAQ; check that page for the current instructions. For a simple impersonation message, SSA’s scam resource directs reports to OIG, while the FTC accepts reports of government impersonation and other scams. The FTC route may be helpful if you need its listed phone or interpreter options.
How common are government impersonation scams?
Government impersonation is a broad category that includes, but is not limited to, Social Security scams. In a September 25, 2026 SSA blog post, FTC author Ari Lazarus described more than 375,000 reports about government impersonation scams from people who lost more than $900 million collectively in 2025. Those figures describe reports from people who lost money, not all complaints and not Social Security scams alone. The SSA blog post also warns that scammers may use personal information to make an approach sound credible.
A separate SSA press release says the FTC received more than 330,000 complaints involving government impersonation in 2025, a 25 percent increase over 2024. That figure covers government impersonation generally, not only SSA-related schemes. SSA’s March 5, 2026 press release gives that comparison.
For earlier Social Security-specific context, an SSA advocate notice reported that the FTC received more than 195,873 complaints of government imposter scams in 2024, that Social Security was the most frequently impersonated agency, and that nearly 12 percent of complainants said they lost money. The notice put reported losses from Social Security scams at more than $97.8 million for that year. These are historical 2024 figures, not a forecast of any individual’s risk. SSA’s February 28, 2025 notice provides the details.
The statistics use different descriptions and scopes: complaint counts, reports from people who lost money, and Social Security-related losses are not interchangeable. They should not be added together or read as estimates of losses caused only by scams impersonating SSA. The broad numbers illustrate why impersonation deserves caution, but your safest next step is the same whether a scam is widespread or rare: end an unexpected, high-pressure contact and verify it through an independently found official channel.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a Social Security call is a scam?
You cannot establish that a call is genuine just from caller ID, a badge, a familiar employee name or personal details the caller knows. Treat an unexpected demand for money or personal information, a threat about suspended benefits or an SSN, pressure to act immediately, or instructions to move funds as a warning. End the call and verify the claim through SSA’s official site or independently located contact information.

Will Social Security call or text me about suspended benefits?
Do not assume that an unexpected call or text is genuine because it claims to concern benefits. SSA’s scam guidance warns about impersonators using calls and texts to threaten benefit suspension or seek information and money. The safe approach is not to rely on the contact’s number or link: end the exchange and check your account or contact SSA independently. This does not mean every real SSA contact is initiated by the beneficiary; it means unexpected requests should be verified.
What should I do if I gave a scammer my Social Security number?
Stop communicating with the contact and watch for signs that the information is being misused. If account credentials were also exposed, change them through the official service. If you discover that someone used your information to obtain a loan, job, tax refund or conduct other business, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan and follow SSA’s advice about contacting the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert. SSA says exposure alone, without misuse, does not require an FTC identity-theft report.
How do I report a Social Security scam?
