First confirm which accounts have an RMD, determine the amount and deadline, then enroll with the custodian that will make the payments. Afterward, monitor the total distributed: the account owner remains responsible for meeting the requirement.
Confirm that your IRA has an RMD
RMDs are annual minimum withdrawals required from certain retirement accounts. Under the general rule, owners of traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs begin taking RMDs for the year they reach age 73. Owners of Roth IRAs do not have lifetime RMDs from their own Roth IRA. A beneficiary who inherits a Roth IRA may have distribution requirements, however, and inherited IRAs and employer plans can follow different rules. The IRS describes RMDs as minimum amounts that account owners generally must withdraw annually beginning with the year they reach age 73; its RMD FAQ was updated December 10, 2024.

Before you enroll, identify the account owner, account type, and whether the account is inherited. An automated service intended for an owner’s traditional IRA may not handle a beneficiary’s account or an employer plan under the same rules. If you have an inherited account or workplace plan, check the rules for that specific account rather than assuming your personal IRA’s schedule applies.

Before relying on an enrollment option, establish which account or accounts it covers and what calculation the service performs.

Work out the year and deadline
For most IRA owners, the first RMD is due by April 1 of the calendar year after the year they turn 73. Each later year’s RMD is generally due by December 31 of that year. For example, an owner who turns 73 in 2026 generally has a first-RMD deadline of April 1, 2027. If that owner waits until April 1, 2027 to take the first RMD, the 2027 RMD is still due by December 31, 2027. That can mean two taxable distributions in one calendar year.
Deciding whether to use the first-year deferral is a tax-planning question, not merely a scheduling preference. The deferral shifts the first payment into the next year but does not cancel the next year’s RMD. Consider the effect of the two distributions on your tax situation and cash needs, and confirm the timing with your custodian or tax adviser before choosing a start date.
When setting up automation, make the deadline explicit. If your first RMD is due April 1, a schedule designed around a December 31 year-end deadline may not be early enough. Ask the custodian when its first payment will be initiated and how much time it needs to process a distribution. Do not treat a requested or scheduled payment as complete until you confirm that it was actually distributed.
Determine the RMD amount before choosing a payment schedule
For a 2026 RMD, the ordinary calculation starts with the IRA’s value on December 31, 2025 and divides it by the applicable life-expectancy factor. The factor comes from the applicable IRS table and depends on the owner’s circumstances; special rules may affect which table or calculation applies. Do not use a factor from a different year or assume every account uses the same denominator.
Your custodian may calculate the RMD for assets held there, but check what its figure includes. A number displayed for one IRA may not account for other IRAs, an inherited account, or a workplace plan. Use the applicable IRS calculation rules for the accounts involved, and ask the custodian what account balances and circumstances are reflected in its estimate.
Traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRA RMDs may generally be aggregated: an owner can calculate the RMDs for those IRAs and take the combined amount from one or more of them. That does not mean you can treat every retirement account as one pool. Employer-plan RMDs generally must be taken separately from each plan. Do not apply the IRA aggregation rule to inherited accounts or workplace plans without checking their separate rules.

Aggregation can make payment planning more flexible, but it makes recordkeeping more important. If you use one IRA to take amounts associated with several eligible IRAs, track the calculated requirement for each account, the combined amount due, and each gross distribution made during the year. Confirm that the accounts and circumstances qualify for aggregation rather than assuming that a custodian’s combined display is complete. Keep workplace plans outside that calculation unless the rules for the specific plan say otherwise.

Providers use different names and rules for automatic RMD payments. Some describe a service that calculates the annual RMD and distributes it according to enrollment instructions; a recurring transfer, by contrast, may only send a fixed amount on a repeating schedule. Confirm which service you are enrolling in and whether it recalculates the payment as the RMD changes each year.
| Provider example | What its official materials describe | Detail to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Fidelity | Its forms index lists “Automatic Withdrawals – RMD/Life Expectancy,” a request for Fidelity to calculate and establish an ongoing automatic RMD or life-expectancy plan for listed IRA types. Its IRA withdrawal help page says scheduled automated withdrawals can be set up through the Automated Withdrawals link. | Confirm current availability, eligible account types, and the steps shown after signing in. |
| Charles Schwab | Schwab describes recurring RMDs through Schwab MoneyLink, with the annual IRA RMD automatically calculated and transferred to a designated account. Its distribution form lists recurring frequencies. | The form says recurring distributions are for cash only and sufficient cash must be available on the distribution date. |
| Vanguard | Vanguard offers an RMD Service that distributes each year according to enrollment instructions. Its service agreement describes annual, semiannual, quarterly, or monthly frequencies and allows changes. | The agreement says the service takes RMDs only from Vanguard mutual funds. Review the current agreement and eligibility terms. |
These are examples of service mechanics, not a guarantee that every account qualifies or that the same options remain available indefinitely. Online labels and enrollment interfaces can change. Start with the RMD, withdrawal, or recurring distribution area of your own custodian’s account, or contact the custodian to confirm the current process. Ask whether the service calculates the RMD or only executes an amount you specify, which account types it supports, and whether it includes only assets held at that provider.
Compare services on the details that determine whether the payment will work: whether the provider calculates the RMD or processes a fixed amount; which account types, including inherited accounts, are eligible; what payment frequencies are offered; whether cash must be available or investments can be sold; where payments may be sent; what withholding controls are available; and whether outside accounts or multiple accounts are included in the calculation. A service that fits one of these needs may not fit another. For example, a monthly schedule may be convenient but still require you to ensure the full annual gross amount is distributed by the deadline.
Read the current instructions and agreement before submitting an enrollment request. Confirm whether the service is restricted to particular investments or cash distributions, whether it can be changed or stopped, and how the annual amount is determined. If your accounts are spread across providers, ask explicitly whether the custodian accepts outside balance information and incorporates it into its calculation. Otherwise, plan to calculate and track the amounts yourself.

- Open the RMD or withdrawal service. Sign in and look for a label such as “Automatic RMD,” “RMD Service,” “Automatic Withdrawals,” or recurring IRA distribution. If you cannot find the option, ask the custodian whether it is available for your account and whether a form is required.
- Select the account that will fund the payment. Confirm the IRA registration and account type. If you intend to use one IRA to satisfy RMDs from multiple eligible IRAs, verify that your calculation and plan cover the other accounts; do not assume the provider’s service can see them.
- Choose a schedule the service offers. Depending on the provider, options may include annual or more frequent installments. Select a schedule that will distribute at least the required amount by the applicable deadline. An installment schedule does not change the annual RMD requirement.
- Specify the destination. Check whether the payment will go to a linked bank account, another eligible destination, or another account option offered by the custodian. Confirm the destination details and allow for processing time rather than setting the final payment on the deadline.
- Check the funding method and available cash. Ask whether the custodian will sell investments or whether you must arrange a sale or keep sufficient cash in the IRA. Schwab’s form, for example, says its recurring distribution is for cash and that adequate cash must be available on the distribution date. Vanguard’s agreement limits its service to distributions from Vanguard mutual funds.
- Make a withholding election. If you want tax withheld, follow the custodian’s process and check how the election applies to scheduled payments. Withholding affects the amount delivered to you, not the gross distribution credited toward the RMD.
- Review and retain the confirmation. Check the selected account, amount or calculation method, start year, frequency, destination, and withholding instructions. Save the confirmation and verify when the first payment is expected.
At enrollment, clarify whether the payment amount is the gross withdrawal or the net amount you expect to receive after withholding. A payment instruction stated as a fixed net amount may not correspond to the gross RMD you need to distribute. Check the custodian’s description and confirm how withholding is applied so you can compare the correct figure with your RMD.
Set up the first payment early enough to identify problems. A new bank link, missing form, insufficient cash, or incorrect account selection can hold up a transfer. If the service is intended to make several installments, check that the first one begins in the right year and that the remaining schedule reaches the full required total before the applicable deadline.
Understand withholding and the amount that counts
A traditional IRA distribution is generally taxable except to the extent it represents basis or is otherwise excluded from taxable income. Federal income-tax withholding is a separate choice from the RMD calculation. For a nonperiodic IRA payment, IRS guidance uses Form W-4R for withholding elections and allows a requested rate from 0% through 100%. IRS guidance also describes a 10% default for nonperiodic distributions unless the recipient elects otherwise where permitted.
Recommended Free Tools
Ask the custodian how it classifies your automatic RMD payments and which election method it requires. If you elect withholding, the withheld tax is part of the gross distribution; it does not reduce the gross amount distributed for purposes of satisfying the RMD. If you choose no withholding or too little, estimated tax payments may be needed depending on your overall tax situation. There is no universally suitable withholding percentage without knowing your circumstances.
Withholding is therefore a cash-flow and tax-payment decision, not a way to lower the amount the IRA must distribute. For example, if part of a gross distribution is sent to the government as withholding, that withheld portion remains part of the distribution; it is the net amount reaching your bank account that is smaller. Review the election for the payment type and ask whether a change will apply to the next scheduled withdrawal or only later payments.
Monitor payments so an automation error does not become a shortfall
Enrollment delegates the payment mechanics, not the owner’s responsibility to ensure the required amount is distributed by the deadline. A practical check is to verify the planned annual total after enrollment, check at least once during the year that payments are arriving and on pace, then confirm the year-to-date total before the applicable deadline. For a first RMD due April 1, monitor against that earlier date.

- Compare the year-to-date gross distributions with the amount you must take, not just the net deposits after withholding.
- Check for rejected transfers, failed payments, insufficient cash, or a changed destination.
- Revisit the schedule if you change custodians, close an account, change investment holdings, or discover that the service covers fewer accounts than expected.
- Allow enough time for the provider to process a corrective payment before the deadline.
The 2026 Instructions for Form 5329 describe a general 25% additional tax on the difference between the RMD required and the amount actually distributed. The additional tax may be reduced to 10% when the correction requirements are met. Because the consequence is tied to the shortfall, an automatic payment that stops or falls short should be addressed promptly rather than left until tax filing.

A simple monitoring routine is to save the custodian’s confirmation, check the account after the first scheduled transaction, review progress at least once midyear, and compare the year-to-date gross amount with the annual requirement well before the deadline. Then check again near year-end, or before April 1 if that is the applicable first-RMD deadline. These are prudent checks, not an IRS-required midyear schedule. They give you time to address a failed transfer, a calculation gap, or a payment that did not cover outside accounts.

The displayed RMD is lower than expected
Check the balance date used in the calculation, the account’s applicable table and denominator, and whether the display covers only that custodian’s account. Determine whether you have additional traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRAs that affect your total. Do not add workplace-plan or inherited-account amounts under the IRA aggregation rule without confirming the separate rules that apply.
The custodian offers only a fixed recurring withdrawal
A fixed transfer is not necessarily an annual RMD calculation service. Compare the scheduled gross payments with the amount required for the year, and find out whether you must update the amount yourself as account values and RMDs change. If it is not clear whether the service recalculates the amount, ask the custodian before relying on it.
A payment is delayed or rejected
Check the transaction status, available cash, linked destination details, and any custodian notice. Contact the provider to learn whether it can retry or make a one-time distribution in time. Recalculate the remaining amount needed for the year and arrange a timely correction; do not assume a scheduled payment has completed simply because it appears on the calendar.

Make a complete inventory of the relevant accounts and identify which provider will send each distribution. You need to change the schedule or tax election
Use the provider’s stated process to change payment instructions and confirm when the change takes effect. If a deadline is near, ask whether the change will apply to the next payment or only to future cycles. Review the confirmation afterward and keep a record of the revised instructions.
Before you rely on automatic RMD payments
- You have confirmed that the account has an RMD requirement and identified any beneficiary or employer-plan rules that may differ.
- You know the applicable RMD year, calculation basis, and due date, including whether a first-year deferral would place two RMDs in the following year.
- You have checked whether the custodian calculates the annual amount or only sends a recurring amount you enter.
- You understand which accounts, investments, and funding methods the service covers.
- Your schedule, destination, cash availability, and withholding election are correct.
- You have a way to verify gross distributions and correct a shortfall before the deadline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my IRA custodian automatically take my RMD?
Some custodians offer an automatic RMD service that calculates the annual amount and sends payments on an enrolled schedule. Others may offer only recurring withdrawals for an amount you specify. Check your custodian’s current terms, the account’s eligibility, and whether the service includes outside accounts. You remain responsible for ensuring the full RMD is distributed on time.
How often can I receive an automatic RMD?
It depends on the custodian and service. Available choices may include annual or more frequent installments. Vanguard’s service agreement, for example, describes annual, semiannual, quarterly, or monthly frequencies; other providers may offer different options. The installments must add up to at least the required amount by the applicable deadline.
When is my first IRA RMD due?
Under the general rule, the first RMD is due by April 1 of the year after you turn 73. Later annual RMDs are generally due by December 31. If you defer the first distribution until April 1, the next year’s RMD is still due by December 31 of that same year, so two distributions may fall in one calendar year.
Does an automatic RMD service include all of my retirement accounts?
Do not assume it does. A custodian’s calculation may cover only eligible accounts and assets held there. Traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRA RMDs may generally be aggregated and withdrawn from one or more of those IRAs, while employer-plan RMDs generally must be taken separately from each plan. Check the rules for inherited accounts and other plans separately.
Does tax withholding count toward my RMD?
Withholding is part of the gross distribution, so the amount withheld does not reduce the gross amount credited toward the RMD. It does reduce the net payment you receive. For nonperiodic IRA payments, IRS guidance identifies Form W-4R and permits a requested federal withholding rate from 0% to 100%; ask your custodian which election process applies.
What happens if an automatic payment is short or missed?
The account owner is responsible for correcting an RMD shortfall. The 2026 Instructions for Form 5329 describe a general 25% additional tax on the shortfall, potentially reduced to 10% when correction requirements are satisfied. Check the payment status, contact the custodian promptly, and arrange any remaining distribution in time for the deadline.
The Bottom Line
Automatic RMD payments can reduce the work of taking distributions, but they do not remove the need to confirm the right accounts, amount, schedule, cash or investment requirements, and withholding. Choose a service that fits your account, verify the first payment, and monitor gross distributions through the deadline. The IRA owner remains responsible for completing the RMD.
