To size a long stock position, decide how much you are willing to lose if your planned exit is reached, then divide that dollar-risk budget by the per-share distance between your entry price and stop price. This is an educational calculation, not a regulator-approved limit or a guarantee: a stop-market order can fill at a different price, while a stop-limit order may not fill at all. There is no universally correct share count, risk percentage, or stop distance for every investor.
Position size and stop-loss level are one decision
Position size is the number of shares you buy. A stop-loss rule is an instruction for what to do if the stock moves against the position. For a long position, the amount you intend to risk depends on both: the share count and the distance from your entry price to your planned exit. Choosing either in isolation can give a misleading picture of the risk.

For example, two people can buy the same stock at the same price and set the same stop price, yet have very different dollar exposure because they own different numbers of shares. Conversely, two people with the same share count can have different planned risk because their entry-to-stop distances differ. The calculation below connects these choices; it does not tell you which risk budget or exit level to choose.

Calculate a share quantity from a chosen risk budget
For a long position, a commonly used educational formula is:
Shares = chosen dollar-risk budget ÷ (entry price − planned stop price)
The entry price must be above the planned stop price for this long-position calculation. The difference between them is the planned risk per share. Dividing a dollar amount you have chosen to risk by that per-share amount produces a share quantity before transaction details. It is arithmetic, not an official recommendation, and it assumes an exit at the planned stop level.

Work through the arithmetic
- Choose a dollar-risk budget. This is an amount you decide in light of your finances and risk tolerance; there is no universal amount the formula supplies for you.
- Set an intended entry price. Use the price relevant to your own plan. If the actual entry differs, recalculate because the entry-to-stop gap changes.
- Choose a planned stop price. The stop should reflect the exit level in your plan. The formula does not identify a suitable stop price for a particular stock.
- Subtract the stop from the entry. For a long position, this is the planned per-share gap.
- Divide the budget by that gap. The result is the share count indicated by the arithmetic, before transaction details and execution differences.
Illustration: $100 budget and a $5 gap
Suppose, purely for illustration, an investor chooses a $100 risk budget and the gap between entry and planned stop is $5 per share. The calculation is $100 ÷ $5 = 20 shares. That result is not a recommendation to risk $100 or buy 20 shares. It also does not guarantee a maximum loss of $100. The calculation assumes a sale at the planned stop; a stop-market order may execute below that level after a fast move or price gap, and a stop-limit order may remain unfilled. The SEC explains that a stop price is a trigger, not a guaranteed execution price, in its stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders bulletin.
Check the result against the actual position
Once you have a candidate share count, check what the holding would represent in your overall portfolio and whether that exposure fits your plan. Position sizing can limit the amount of one holding relative to a chosen risk budget, but it cannot make the rest of the portfolio diversified. A smaller position may still be part of a concentrated portfolio.
The formula is most useful as a consistency check: it shows how changing the budget, entry, stop, or share count changes the intended loss if the planned exit is achieved. It cannot establish that a given stock is appropriate, that a stop is likely to be reached, or that the eventual loss will equal the budget.

Choose a stop rule before entering the position
A useful stop rule is specific enough that you know what order or action you intend to use and what condition triggers it. The stop price is not a promise about what you will receive. It is an instruction threshold whose behavior depends on the order type and the broker’s implementation.
Do not pick a stop distance merely to produce a desired share quantity. The stop and the size answer different questions: the stop expresses an intended exit condition, while the share count determines how much exposure you take up to that planned exit. If the calculated quantity feels too large, possible inputs to revisit are the dollar-risk budget, the intended entry, and whether the trade fits your goals and time horizon. The arithmetic itself cannot decide which adjustment is right.
What the SEC says a stop order does
A standard stop order, also called a stop-market order, becomes a market order when its stop price is reached. The order then seeks execution, but the fill can be at a price different from the trigger. The SEC’s wording is direct: “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” The bulletin notes that actual execution can deviate significantly based on available liquidity. A sharp move or gap can therefore produce a larger loss than the entry-to-stop calculation suggests.

A stop can also be triggered by a short-term intraday movement. If your rule assumes a stop will only respond to a lasting or closing-price move, verify that the order you use actually follows that condition; a conventional stop trigger may not match that intention. Trigger standards differ by brokerage, and firms may use last-sale prices or quotations. Check the broker’s explanation before relying on a trigger.
Stop-market and stop-limit orders make different trade-offs
| Order instruction | What happens after the trigger | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop (stop-market) | Becomes a market order. | Execution is sought, but the fill price may differ from the stop price. |
| Stop-limit | Becomes a limit order. | The execution price is constrained, but the order may not fill if the stock moves past the limit. |
| Trailing stop | The stop trigger follows a specified movement according to broker rules. | Availability and implementation vary; check the broker’s details before relying on it. |
This comparison follows the SEC’s Investor Bulletin on stop, stop-limit, and trailing stop orders, updated August 18, 2026. A stop-market order prioritizes seeking execution after the trigger, not the price at which the sale occurs. A stop-limit order provides a price constraint but gives up certainty of execution. Neither order type ensures that your realized loss will match the formula.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnderstand the stop-limit price as well as its trigger
A stop-limit order has a trigger and a limit. Once triggered, it becomes a limit order, which can execute only at the limit price or better. If the stock moves past the limit and no execution is available at an acceptable price, the order may not sell the shares. A lower theoretical loss at the limit is not protection if the position remains open while the stock continues moving.

When comparing order choices, ask yourself which failure mode matters more to your plan: receiving a price that differs from the stop, or not exiting at all. A stop-market order can have price uncertainty; a stop-limit order can have execution uncertainty. A label such as “stop-loss” does not remove either trade-off.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a practical sequence to set size and place an order
Order-entry labels and supported instructions vary across firms, so there is no single reliable menu path that applies to every brokerage. The SEC’s Understanding Order Types bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, notes that firms may not offer every order type and that trigger standards can differ. Use the broker’s own order preview and definitions rather than assuming every platform handles an instruction the same way.
- Write down the purpose and time horizon. Identify why the investment fits your goals and how long you expect to hold it. Your willingness to accept losses and your financial ability to bear them are relevant to that decision.
- Determine a risk budget you can tolerate. Choose a dollar amount for the calculation only after considering your overall situation. Do not treat an example amount or a percentage found elsewhere as a universal rule.
- Set the intended entry and exit levels. Record the entry price you are using and the planned stop price. For a long position, confirm that the entry is above the stop so the per-share gap is positive.
- Calculate the preliminary share count. Divide the selected dollar amount by the entry-to-stop gap. Treat the result as a planning estimate under the assumption of execution at the stop, not as a maximum-loss guarantee.
- Review the order’s trigger standard. Check whether the brokerage says the stop is triggered by last-sale prices, quotations, or another stated standard. Confirm how the broker describes intraday triggering and any relevant order limitations.
- Select the order instruction deliberately. Decide whether you intend a stop-market order, stop-limit order, or a trailing stop if the broker offers it. Read what happens at the trigger and, for a stop-limit, understand the limit and the possibility of no fill.
- Review the complete order before submitting. Check the stock, share quantity, trigger, limit if applicable, and the broker’s order details. The broker’s preview is the place to confirm the actual instruction being submitted.
- Revisit the plan if an input changes. If your entry changes, the price gap used in the calculation changes. If your planned exit or chosen risk budget changes, recalculate rather than relying on the old share count.
Check whether the position fits the portfolio
A per-stock stop and share count address one holding; diversification concerns the portfolio as a whole. If you hold only a few individual stocks, limiting each one’s calculated risk does not necessarily spread exposure among different investments. The SEC’s Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing says a portfolio of only four or five individual stocks is not diversified. That is investor-education guidance, not a claim that owning a particular larger number automatically guarantees diversification.

Review the proposed shares in context rather than treating the formula’s output as an instruction to buy. Ask how much of your portfolio the holding would represent, whether several holdings leave you concentrated, and whether the position aligns with your goals and time horizon. A stop can define a planned exit for an individual stock, but it cannot substitute for a portfolio-level allocation decision.
Common errors and how to correct them
- Treating the stop price as the guaranteed sale price. A stop-market order turns into a market order after triggering; its execution can differ from the trigger. Use the calculated loss as a planning estimate, not a cap.
- Assuming a stop-limit guarantees an exit. It constrains the acceptable execution price, but the order may not fill if the market moves beyond the limit. Decide whether that execution risk is compatible with the plan.
- Choosing a share count before calculating the gap. A given number of shares can imply very different intended dollar risk depending on entry and stop. Calculate the per-share gap first, then examine the resulting position.
- Choosing a universal account percentage. No fixed percentage is established as correct for every investor. Ability and willingness to lose money, goals, and time horizon differ.
- Assuming every broker triggers stops the same way. Trigger standards and order availability vary. Verify the specific broker’s rules and supported instructions.
- Confusing individual risk control with diversification. A small calculated risk for one position says nothing by itself about how diversified the portfolio is. Review holdings and allocation separately.
- Keeping a stale calculation after changing the plan. A different entry, stop, or budget changes the arithmetic. Recalculate whenever one of those inputs changes.
What this calculation can—and cannot—tell you
The calculation gives a transparent relationship between a chosen dollar amount, a planned entry-to-stop gap, and a preliminary share count. It can help compare possible position sizes under the same assumptions and expose why a tighter or wider planned gap changes the share count that corresponds to a fixed budget.
It cannot identify the right stock, validate a stop level, forecast price movement, guarantee a sale, or ensure that a loss stays within the budget. The actual result depends on execution, and the chosen risk budget remains a personal decision. SEC investor materials are U.S. investor education; order availability, account rules, and broker practices may differ by firm and jurisdiction.
