Add the card to Apple Wallet, complete your bank’s verification, then authenticate and hold your device near a contactless reader—or choose Apple Pay at a supported online or in-app checkout.

Apple Pay, Apple Wallet, Apple Cash, and Apple Card are different
Apple Pay is the payment service used at stores, in apps, and on participating websites. Apple Wallet is the app that stores payment cards, transit cards, passes, tickets, keys, and other credentials.
Apple Cash is a separate digital cash account available only in supported markets. Apple Card is a separate credit-card product. You do not need an Apple Card to use Apple Pay; most people add an existing eligible card from their bank or card issuer.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple Pay is not a bank or card network. Your underlying card remains subject to the issuer’s interest rate, foreign-transaction fees, rewards rules, fraud controls, spending limits, and approval decisions.
What you need before setting up Apple Pay
- A compatible Apple device.
- The latest available version of iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, macOS, or visionOS recommended by Apple.
- An Apple Account signed in on the device.
- Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or a device passcode.
- Two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple Account.
- A debit, credit, or prepaid card from a participating issuer.
- Apple Pay support in your country or region.
Apple Pay availability and participating issuers vary by market. A Visa or Mastercard logo alone does not guarantee that a particular card can be added. Check Apple’s country and region list and your bank’s Apple Pay support information.
How to set up Apple Pay on an iPhone
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap the Add Card button.
- Choose the relevant card type.
- Scan the physical card if offered, or enter its details manually.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Complete verification through your bank app, text message, security questions, or another method selected by the issuer.
Alternatively, your bank’s app may have an Add to Apple Wallet or Add to Apple Pay button. Scanning a card does not approve it: the card issuer must verify and provision it.
A card may fail even when the bank supports Apple Pay because of a device limit, account restriction, region mismatch, outdated software, or a temporary service problem. Apple’s iPhone setup guide explains the current flow.
Set up Apple Pay on other Apple devices
Apple Watch
On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, choose Wallet & Apple Pay, tap Add Card, and complete issuer verification. Cards are provisioned for individual devices, so adding a card to an iPhone does not necessarily add it to the watch automatically.
iPad and Apple Vision Pro
Use Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Add Card. The exact options depend on the model, operating-system version, region, and card.
Rank #2
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Mac
On a Mac with Touch ID, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Add Card. A Mac without Touch ID can generally confirm an Apple Pay purchase using a nearby Bluetooth-connected iPhone or Apple Watch signed in to the same Apple Account, provided the merchant and browser support that flow.
How to pay in a store
iPhone with Face ID
- Double-click the side button.
- Authenticate with Face ID or enter your passcode.
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the contactless reader.
- Wait for the checkmark and Done.
iPhone with Touch ID
- Double-click the Home button.
- Keep your finger on Touch ID, or enter your passcode if requested.
- Hold the iPhone near the reader until the payment is confirmed.
Apple Watch
- Double-click the Apple Watch side button.
- Scroll to another card if necessary.
- Hold the display near the contactless reader.
- Wait for the tap, beep, or on-screen confirmation.
The merchant must accept Apple Pay or contactless payments, and the terminal must accept your card’s payment network. A contactless symbol does not guarantee that every card in your Wallet will work.
How to pay in apps and online
Apple Pay can be used only when the merchant displays an Apple Pay button or offers Apple Pay as a payment method.
- Tap Apple Pay at checkout.
- Review the selected card, shipping address, billing address, email address, and phone number.
- Choose another card if needed.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, a passcode, Apple Watch authentication, or Mac Touch ID.
- Wait for the Done confirmation.
Third-party browser and non-Apple-device support depends on the merchant, browser, device, market, and software. Some checkouts display a code that you scan with an iPhone or iPad. If there is no Apple Pay button, you cannot force Apple Pay into that checkout.
Choose another card or change the default
For one purchase
When Apple Pay opens, tap the displayed card and select another one. Online checkouts may label this control Other Cards & Pay Later Options or Change Payment Method.

- iPad or Apple Vision Pro: Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Default Card.
- Mac with Touch ID: System Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay, then select the preferred card.
Default cards are device-specific. Changing the iPhone default does not necessarily change the default on an Apple Watch or Mac.
Update billing and contact details
For online and in-app checkout, Apple Pay can fill in your billing address, shipping address, email, and phone number. On iPhone, use Wallet > card > More > Card Details > Billing Address for card billing information, and Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction Defaults for checkout details.
These settings affect Apple Pay checkout information; they do not necessarily change the permanent billing address held by your card issuer.

Use Apple Pay for transit
Some transit systems let you designate a payment card, transit card, pass, or key for Express Mode. On supported systems, Express Mode can allow transit access without the usual Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode step.
Availability depends on the city, transit operator, card or pass type, device, and region. Not every contactless transit reader supports Apple Pay. Confirm the selected Express card before traveling. Express Mode is a transit feature and should not be treated as a guarantee that ordinary purchases will work without authentication, internet access, or battery power.
How secure is Apple Pay?
For ordinary Apple Pay transactions, the merchant does not receive your physical card number. Apple uses a device-specific account number and a transaction-specific security code instead. Device authentication helps prevent someone who finds your device from paying with it.

- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
Apple does not approve or decline the transaction; your bank or card issuer does. Apple Pay also does not make purchases anonymous. Apple’s privacy documentation describes limited information that may be retained or shared with issuers and authorized providers for provisioning, service operation, and fraud prevention. See Apple’s Apple Pay security and privacy explanation.
If your iPhone is lost or stolen
- Open Find My.
- Mark the device as lost using the available lost-device controls.
- This suspends Apple Pay on that device.
- Contact your card issuer if the card account itself may be compromised.
- Remove the device from your Apple Account if necessary.
Lost Mode does not necessarily cancel the underlying physical card. Ask the issuer whether the card should also be locked or replaced.

“Could Not Add Card,” “Invalid Card,” or “This card cannot be used”
- Confirm Apple Pay is available in your country or region.
- Confirm that your bank and exact card type participate.
- Update the device software.
- Enable Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or a passcode.
- Confirm Apple Account two-factor authentication.
- Check your internet connection and Apple service status.
- Try adding the card from your issuer’s app.
- Contact the bank or card issuer.
For Card Device Limit and card-approval errors, the issuer is usually the right contact. Apple’s card-addition troubleshooting page lists the relevant checks.
The payment was declined
Check whether the card is active and unlocked, the merchant accepts its network, the terminal supports contactless payments, and the card has no spending, geographic, offline, or fraud restriction. Try another card in Wallet and check for a fraud alert from the issuer.
The issuer—not Apple—makes the approval decision. See Apple’s guidance for a declined Apple Pay card.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The terminal does not respond
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the reader and keep it still briefly.
- Make sure the terminal is ready for payment.
- Try another reader or ask whether contactless payments are enabled.
- Select another card.
- Follow instructions if the terminal requests a PIN or signature.
PIN, signature, offline, and transaction-limit rules vary by country, merchant, network, issuer, and transaction amount. Apple Pay does not bypass all of them.

The Apple Pay button is missing
The merchant may not support Apple Pay for that particular product, checkout, browser, device, or region. Use another payment method; Apple Pay cannot be added to a checkout that has not integrated it.
View transactions, refunds, and card removal
On iPhone or Apple Watch, open Wallet, tap the card, review recent transactions, and tap an item for more details. Wallet history may not be complete or available in every country. Your card issuer’s statement is authoritative for posted amounts, disputes, and complete history; Apple explains the limitations in its transaction-history guidance.
For a refund, keep the receipt and follow the merchant’s instructions. The merchant may ask for the same device or payment credential used for the purchase, and refunds may not appear instantly in Wallet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo remove a card, open Wallet, tap the card, tap More, choose Card Details, and use the remove-card option. You can also manage cards through Wallet & Apple Pay settings. Removing a digital card does not necessarily close the underlying card account.
Apple Pay abroad and without an internet connection
Apple Pay may work abroad where contactless payments are accepted and your card network and issuer support the transaction. Your issuer may still charge foreign-transaction or currency-conversion fees. Confirm international usage with the issuer before traveling.
Do not assume Apple Pay always works offline. Some contactless transactions may be initiated without a current internet connection, but authorization, terminal behavior, and issuer rules vary. A functioning, authenticated device is normally needed for ordinary purchases. Supported transit systems may have special Express Mode or power-reserve behavior, but that should not be generalized to all Apple Pay payments.
Do you need to buy anything?
No. If you already have a compatible Apple device and eligible card, Apple Pay requires no separate subscription or consumer usage fee. Apple Watch can make payments more convenient, but buying one—or a new iPhone—solely for Apple Pay is difficult to justify when you already have a compatible device or a physical contactless card.
Recommended Free Tools
If Apple Pay is unavailable, a physical contactless card is the simplest fallback. Android users may prefer Google Wallet, while Samsung Galaxy users can consider Samsung Wallet. Your bank’s app may also provide the clearest route for card eligibility, verification, controls, and disputes.
Bottom line
Apple Pay is a convenient way to use an existing eligible card without handing the merchant your physical card number. Set it up through Wallet, verify it with your issuer, authenticate before paying, and remember that the bank—not Apple—controls card eligibility and transaction approval. Availability, transit features, browser support, fees, and offline behavior all depend on your device, market, merchant, card, and issuer.
