To send a red packet in the WeChat mobile app, open a one-to-one or group chat, tap + beside the message box, choose Red Packet or 红包, enter the details, and complete WeChat Pay authorization. The feature is not available identically to every account: your region, wallet status, identity verification, app version, and funding method can affect whether you can send or receive one.
Before you start
You need an active WeChat account, a normal one-to-one or group conversation, and an enabled WeChat Pay or Weixin Pay wallet where red packets are supported. You may also need identity verification and a supported funding source, such as wallet balance or an eligible bank card.

How to send a red packet to one person
- Open WeChat and enter the conversation with the intended recipient.
- Tap the + icon beside the message field.
- Choose Red Packet or 红包.
- Enter the amount and add an optional greeting.
- Check the recipient, amount, and message carefully.
- Tap the payment or confirmation button. In some Chinese-language interfaces this is shown as 塞钱进红包; translated labels may differ.
- Complete the requested payment-password, biometric, or other WeChat Pay authentication.
- Confirm that the red-packet card appears in the chat.
A red packet is a money gift presented as a digital envelope. The recipient normally taps the card and opens it rather than receiving the money through the ordinary transfer interface. Tencent’s documentation describes the one-to-one process as setting the amount and greeting, deducting the sender’s funds, displaying the packet in the chat, and allowing the recipient to open it: Tencent red-packet documentation.

How to send a red packet in a group
- Open the target group chat.
- Tap +, then choose Red Packet or 红包.
- If prompted, select the group-red-packet option.
- Enter the total amount and the number of packets or recipients.
- Add a greeting if desired.
- Choose equal distribution or random distribution when the option is available.
- Review the group name, total amount, quantity, and distribution method.
- Tap the payment button and complete WeChat Pay authentication.
With equal distribution, each claimed packet has the same value. With random distribution, the total is divided unevenly among eligible claimants; some implementations also identify the person who received the highest amount as the “luckiest” claimant. Group members may claim packets quickly, so quantity and total should be checked before payment. The exact settings and labels can vary by region and account.
How recipients open a red packet
The recipient taps the red-packet card in the conversation and chooses Open, or the equivalent localized control. In a group, the details page may show who claimed packets and the amounts received. The recipient must still be eligible to use the applicable WeChat Pay wallet.

A packet may be unavailable because it was already claimed, no money remains, the recipient has already claimed it, or the packet has expired under the applicable implementation. Tencent documents automatic refund of unclaimed group packets after 24 hours in a specific red-packet implementation; do not assume that timing applies universally to every consumer account or region.

If your goal is simply to pay one person a precise amount, use Transfer if it is available and appropriate. It is a different feature from a red packet.

Why the Red Packet option is missing
Try these checks in order:
- Make sure you are in a normal one-to-one or group chat, not a context where payment features are unavailable.
- Tap + and inspect all available options; the label may appear in Chinese or under a different translation.
- Open Me → Services, or the equivalent wallet/payment area, and check whether WeChat Pay or Weixin Pay is activated.
- Complete any identity-verification prompts shown in the wallet.
- Check whether your account region and funding method support peer-to-peer payments, not only merchant purchases.
- Update WeChat through the official app store and sign in again if necessary.
- If the function remains unavailable, contact official WeChat support.
Linking a foreign card is not a guarantee that red packets or person-to-person transfers will be enabled. Why payment or claiming fails
Payment fails before the packet is sent
- There is insufficient wallet balance or available card credit.
- The bank declined the card authorization.
- The card type, currency, or account region is unsupported.
- Payment password or biometric authentication failed.
- Your account has a verification, risk-control, or transaction-frequency restriction.
- A network interruption stopped the payment process.
Check the transaction result and wallet history before trying repeatedly. If money appears to have been authorized but no red-packet card is visible, avoid sending a second packet immediately; review the payment status and contact official support if necessary. Tencent’s implementation documentation discusses handling for cases where payment occurs but sending does not complete.

The recipient cannot open it
Ask the recipient to check that their wallet is activated and that their account and region support receiving red packets. Also check whether the packet was already claimed, depleted, or expired. An app refresh or stable network connection may resolve a stale display, but payment or identity restrictions require support or account remediation.
International users: an important distinction
Having a WeChat account, adding an international card, using merchant payments, and sending peer-to-peer money are separate matters. An international Visa, Mastercard, or other card may support some merchant-payment functions without enabling red packets, transfers, wallet balance, or cash-out.

Eligibility can depend on your registration region, current location, card, identity information, wallet configuration, currency, and current policy. Do not assume that a non-mainland-China account can send a packet to any contact abroad, or that received money can be withdrawn directly to a foreign bank account. The app’s own wallet prompts and official support are the appropriate authority for your account.
Safety checklist
- Never share your WeChat payment password, SMS verification code, or full card details.
- Do not scan an unknown QR code to “unlock” or “verify” a red packet.
- Do not pay a separate fee to receive one.
- Confirm completion inside the app; do not rely on a screenshot.
- Be cautious if a stranger sends money and asks you to send it back elsewhere.
- Before paying, confirm the contact name, profile photo, group name, amount, quantity, and greeting.
- Do not assume a mistaken packet can always be canceled or recalled.

Can I send a red packet without WeChat Pay?
Normally, no. The red-packet flow requires payment authorization through an enabled and eligible WeChat Pay or Weixin Pay wallet.
Can I send one from WeChat on a computer?
The standard consumer flow is in the mobile app. Desktop features can differ, so use the mobile chat interface if the Red Packet option is not shown on your computer.
