You can sell tickets online through a ticketing platform, your own website or commerce checkout, or promotional channels that send buyers to a checkout. The right route depends on whether you need audience discovery, control over the buying experience, simple event operations, or a combination. For a first event, start with one checkout system, calculate what buyers pay and what you keep, then promote that checkout link.

How online ticket sales work

A typical sale has four parts: a buyer finds the event, chooses a ticket, pays through a checkout, and receives a ticket or confirmation. The organizer then tracks orders, handles questions and refunds, and checks attendees in at the event.

Some services combine ticket listings, checkout, payment processing, ticket delivery, promotion tools, and check-in. Other routes—such as a social post or an email campaign—help people discover the event but rely on a separate checkout. Shopify’s July 7, 2026 guide describes social media, an organizer’s website, and platforms such as Eventbrite or Ticketmaster as ticket-selling channels; the best fit depends on the event and the organizer’s needs (Shopify’s guide to selling tickets online).

13 practical methods to sell tickets online

These are 13 distinct routes or tools, not a universal ranking of 13 platforms. Several work best together: choose one checkout method, then use relevant discovery and promotion channels to bring buyers to it.

Ticketing checkout

  1. Use a hosted ticketing platform. Create an event page, set ticket types and quantities, and send buyers to the platform’s checkout. This is a straightforward starting point when you want ticket delivery and event-management features bundled into one workflow. Compare discovery, fees, payout timing, refunds, and check-in before committing.
  2. List on a platform with event discovery. A platform listing may help people browse events, but do not assume it will supply enough buyers. Check how events are surfaced and plan to promote your own listing, too.
  3. Use a platform’s organizer tools for operations. Choose a service that can provide attendee lists, QR-code tickets, check-in, or door-sale workflows if you need them. These operational features can matter as much as the public event page.

Your own website and commerce checkout

  1. Sell from your existing event website. Add a clear ticket button that leads to a ticketing checkout. This retains your event information and brand on your own site while letting a ticketing provider process the order.
  2. Embed a ticketing checkout on your site. Where a provider supports it, embedding checkout can keep the buying flow closer to your website. Confirm which provider handles payment, customer support, refunds, and attendee data.
  3. Use an ecommerce store for ticket products. A commerce platform can suit organizers already selling products or managing a branded store. Check that the setup supports the ticket quantities, delivery, event dates, and check-in process you need; a product order is not automatically an event ticketing system.
  4. Sell through a landing page. A focused page can explain the event, location, schedule, access needs, and ticket options before linking to checkout. It is useful when you need a simple page but do not need a full event website.

Audience discovery channels

  1. Promote through social media. Share event details and a direct checkout link in posts, stories, or profile links. Social media is a way to reach an audience, not necessarily a complete ticketing or payment workflow.
  2. Use an event-listing or community calendar. Submit the event to relevant local, professional, or interest-based calendars. Confirm whether listings are free, paid, moderated, or linked to an external ticket page.
  3. Partner with a venue, performer, or community organization. Ask partners to share the event’s ticket link with people who are likely to care about it. Agree on what each partner will communicate and avoid creating confusing or competing checkout links.

Direct promotion that sends people to checkout

  1. Email an opted-in audience. Send event details and a prominent ticket link to people who have agreed to receive your messages. Keep the event date, price, and key terms consistent with the checkout page.
  2. Use paid advertising. Ads can direct a defined audience to an event page or checkout. Set a spending limit and assess whether sales and proceeds justify the cost; advertising does not guarantee sales.
  3. Share the link through relevant groups and direct outreach. Post only where promotion is welcome, follow group rules, and contact likely attendees or partner organizations with a concise invitation. Avoid unsolicited bulk messages.

Choose a route by comparing the whole transaction

Before publishing ticket links, compare the following. Platform terms and features can vary by country and change over time, so verify current terms for your location and event.

What to compare Questions to answer
Audience discovery Will the service expose the event to potential buyers, or must you bring all traffic?
Checkout control Can you use your own site and branding? Who controls the buyer flow and handles customer information?
Total cost What are the ticketing and payment-processing charges? Does the buyer pay them, or do you absorb them? What is the buyer’s total and your net proceeds?
Payouts and refunds When are funds paid out, what can delay them, and who manages cancellations, refunds, and buyer support?
Promotion Are email, social sharing, analytics, or advertising tools included, or must you arrange them separately?
Event operations Can you manage attendee lists, QR check-in, door sales, and physical tickets if needed?
Setup and event fit Does the setup match your event’s size, ticket types, timed entry, and location without unnecessary complexity?

Calculate ticket fees and proceeds before setting a price

Do not compare ticketing services by a headline fee alone. A buyer’s total and an organizer’s net can differ depending on whether charges are added at checkout or absorbed into the ticket price. Account for ticketing charges, payment processing, any costs you pay separately, and the amount you need to retain for event expenses.

Eventbrite says its ticketing fees vary by country and currency. Its documented default is for attendees to pay ticketing fees in addition to the ticket price, though organizers can choose to absorb those fees. Its payout guidance describes schedules tied to event completion or a selected schedule, with additional bank-processing time. These are Eventbrite-specific workflows, not rules for all platforms; check the current terms for your country before relying on them (Eventbrite fees and payment processing; Eventbrite payout timing).

Shopify’s July 7, 2026 article gives fee examples for Shopify and Eventbrite. Treat those as examples published on that date, not permanent rates or a comparison that applies to every country. Confirm the provider’s current local pricing before setting ticket prices (Shopify’s guide to selling tickets online).

Show the total price clearly in the United States

For live-event tickets in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says its Unfair or Deceptive Fees Rule took effect on May 12, 2025. Its staff compliance guide says the rule covers businesses offering live-event tickets, including third-party platforms and resellers. In general, mandatory fees that are known and calculable must be included in the upfront total price. The FTC guide describes specific treatment for taxes, shipping, optional items, and other charges that may be excluded from that total but must be disclosed before payment (FTC: Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees FAQs).

The FTC describes the FAQ as staff guidance; it says the FAQ is not binding on the Commission. This summary is not individualized legal advice, and state or local requirements may also apply. Check the rules that apply to your location and sales arrangement.

Set up ticket delivery and event-day check-in

Many events can use digital tickets and a phone for check-in; a dedicated scanner or printer is not automatically necessary. For an Eventbrite workflow, the Organizer app can scan ticket QR codes using an iOS or Android device camera, and Eventbrite also documents manual check-in (Eventbrite Organizer app check-in instructions).

Physical ticket printing is a specific operational choice, not a default requirement. Eventbrite lists support for BOCA and Star printers. Its BOCA setup guide specifies ticket stock measuring 2.5 inches by 6 inches along with device, network, and setup requirements. Confirm current compatibility and supplies before buying equipment (Eventbrite printer compatibility; Eventbrite BOCA printer setup).

Protect the checkout and ticket supply

Use the ticket issuer’s authorized checkout and follow its purchase limits. Do not use bots or other methods to bypass an issuer’s controls. The FTC’s summary of the Better Online Ticket Sales Act identifies circumvention of ticket-issuer security measures and certain sales of tickets obtained through that circumvention as prohibited conduct (FTC overview of ticket sales and the BOTS Act).

A simple launch checklist

  1. Choose one ticket checkout route that supports your event’s ticket types and attendee workflow.
  2. Set ticket quantities, prices, dates, delivery, refund terms, and any limits before sharing the link.
  3. Calculate the buyer’s total and your expected proceeds using current local fees and applicable pricing rules.
  4. Test the event page and checkout on a phone; verify the confirmation and ticket delivery a buyer receives.
  5. Share the same checkout link through the promotional channels that fit your audience.
  6. Prepare check-in instructions and a backup attendee list or manual process appropriate to your platform.
