You can start selling t-shirts online without buying a large batch of stock: print-on-demand (POD) lets a production partner make and ship each shirt after a customer orders. But it does not remove the need to validate demand, check product quality, price in all costs, and bring shoppers to your store. The right channel depends on whether you value marketplace discovery, control over your brand, or a mix of both.
1. Choose a niche and test demand
A specific audience gives you a clearer basis for design and promotion than a broad category such as “funny shirts.” Define who the shirt is for and what would make it appealing to that buyer. Then look at existing sellers and audience or search interest before building a large catalog or committing money to inventory. Shopify’s guide to selling print-on-demand t-shirts and its 2026 t-shirt business guide both recommend focusing on a niche and validating interest.
Validation is not a guarantee of sales. Treat early response to designs and listings as feedback: use it to decide what to refine before investing more time or money.
2. Choose how to make and fulfill shirts
Your production model determines when you spend money, how much control you have over the product, and how much fulfillment work you take on.

| Model | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Print-on-demand | A production partner prints and ships a shirt after a customer places an order. | Can reduce the need to hold finished stock, but you still need to account for production, shipping, selling fees, and promotion. |
| Batch purchasing | You buy finished inventory in advance and sell from that stock. | Requires upfront spending and a plan for storage and unsold sizes or designs. |
| In-house printing | You print and fulfill orders yourself. | Offers more direct production control but adds equipment, materials, and operating work. |
There is no universal break-even point established for these options. A beginner can compare the actual costs and workload for their expected order volume rather than assume one model will be cheaper.
What to compare in a print-on-demand provider
- Garment brands, fit, and material choices
- Available print methods and print areas
- Production and shipping reliability
- Mockup tools and integrations with the sales channel you plan to use
- Full costs for the garment, printing, shipping, and any applicable fees
Shopify’s guide names Printful, Printify, Apliiq, and Teelaunch as examples of POD providers; those examples are not independent quality rankings. Printful’s t-shirt selling page says custom shirts start at $8.75, but it also says final cost varies by garment style, print area, and method. Treat that as a vendor-stated starting figure, not a universal or guaranteed quote.

3. Create original designs and check usage rights
Make artwork that fits the audience and can be reproduced effectively with your chosen print method. Use your own designs or obtain the rights needed to use outside material. Logos, characters, artwork, and recognizable phrases may be protected by copyright or trademark. Shopify’s guide warns that using protected material without a license can lead to legal trouble and store closure. This is Shopify’s editorial guidance, not a substitute for legal advice about a particular design.
4. Order a sample and check the product
If your provider and business model allow it, order a sample before making a design available to customers. Shopify’s startup guide includes sampling as a way to validate quality. Check:

On 95% polyester shirts, sublimation prints can outlast the shirt itself
- Machine Washable: For best results, wait 24–72 hours after pressing before the first wash, then wash the shirts inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low or hang dry. Avoid bleach and very high dryer heat to help keep your sublimation prints bright and the fabric in good shape for as long as possible

The smooth polyester surface also works with heat transfer vinyl, UV dtf and screen printing, giving you flexibility for different print shops and equipment
- Fabric feel and fit
- Color and print placement
- How the print looks on the actual garment
- Whether the delivered shirt matches the listing images and description
A sample helps you assess a specific product and print combination; it cannot establish how every order or future fulfillment will turn out.
5. Price from the full cost, not just the shirt
Start with the provider’s garment and print cost, then add shipping, platform and payment fees, marketing expenses, and the margin you want. Recheck the calculation when you change garment style, print area, printing method, or shipping destination. POD avoids buying finished stock in advance, but it does not make the other costs disappear.

Because costs and platform terms can change, confirm current figures with the provider and channel before publishing prices. The $8.75 starting figure on Printful’s page is not enough by itself to set a retail price: the vendor says the final cost depends on product and printing choices.

No single platform is best for every beginner. A branded storefront can give your business more control over its shopping experience, while a marketplace may offer a place where shoppers already browse. Either way, do not assume that connecting a channel will automatically bring traffic or sales.

| Decision factor | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Audience discovery | Marketplaces may provide discovery opportunities; an independent store generally requires you to attract visitors. |
| Brand control | Consider how much control you want over the shopping experience and customer-facing brand. |
| Operations | Check printer integration, order routing, shipping, returns, and customer service responsibilities. |
| Economics | Include any subscription, listing, transaction, payment, product, shipping, and marketing costs that apply. |
| Your capacity | Be realistic about the time and skills you can devote to store management and promotion. |
Shopify describes connecting to Amazon Merch, Etsy, eBay, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube in its online t-shirt selling guide. Printful lists Shopify, Etsy, and Wix among its integrations on its selling page. These are examples of channel options, not guarantees that a seller will be eligible, receive traffic, or make a profit. Printful characterizes Shopify as flexible for branding and Etsy as offering built-in traffic; that is vendor guidance, not a neutral comparison or ranking.
7. Promote the shirts and learn from buyer response
Plan how the target audience will find your listings. Shopify suggests social content, collaborations, email, SEO, and paid advertising as possible tactics in its POD guide. Choose an approach you can sustain, then use the response to refine your designs and promotion. A marketplace listing or platform integration by itself does not guarantee sales.
Quick Recap
What beginners should verify before launch
- Confirm current platform fees, provider costs, integrations, and marketplace requirements; these details can change.
- Check business registration, tax, and licensing requirements for your location and circumstances. The rules are jurisdiction-specific, so consult local authorities or a qualified tax professional where appropriate.
- Make sure product descriptions and images accurately represent the shirt you expect customers to receive.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
