What scrap yards consider when buying metal
Scrap metal is not one uniform product. Buyers assess the metal type, condition, contamination, quantity, and how the material is presented. Industry descriptions such as ReMA/ISRI specifications can help define categories, but they do not guarantee that a local yard accepts a particular grade or will classify your material the same way. The final terms are agreed between buyer and seller. The U.S. EPA definition of scrap metal is for hazardous-waste regulation, not a retail grading guide.
There is no reliable universal price for an unspecified load. What a buyer will pay depends on the material and grade, weight, location, date, and the buyer’s deductions or fees. Get current quotes directly from nearby facilities.
Step 1: Confirm ownership and make an inventory
Sell only material you own or are authorized to sell. List the items you have and estimate the quantity or weight if practical. Note whether items are loose pieces, attached to other materials, or still part of equipment; that form can affect whether a yard accepts them and how it grades them.

Do not strip equipment or open sealed or pressurized objects unless you are qualified and the buyer has specifically told you to prepare them that way. Some industry specifications exclude certain attachments, contaminants, or sealed and pressurized items. Acceptance and safe handling depend on the material and facility.
Step 2: Sort only what you can identify confidently
Keep clearly different materials separate where practical, such as steel or iron, copper, aluminum, brass, and stainless steel. If you cannot identify a piece, set it aside and describe it as uncertain rather than guessing at its grade.

A magnet can be a useful preliminary sorting aid: attraction suggests ferrous content, but it does not prove that an item is a particular grade. A magnet that does not attract a piece does not tell you which nonferrous metal it is, and alloys or coatings can complicate identification. Magnetic separation described in industry specifications is not a universal requirement for household sellers.
Step 3: Contact local scrap yards before you go
Search for scrap-metal recyclers or yards that serve your area, then call or check their current policies. Describe the material, its condition, and your estimated quantity. Ask each buyer the same questions so you can compare responses:

- What contamination, coatings, or attachments are not accepted or may lead to a deduction?
- Should I keep metals separate? Should the item remain intact, or do you require cutting or stripping?
- Is there a minimum quantity or an appointment requirement?
- How is the load weighed, and whose scale or weight ticket determines settlement?
- What current price basis applies, and what deductions or fees could change the amount paid?
- What identification, proof of ownership or authorization, or other documents should I bring?
- What payment method do you use, and when is payment made?
ReMA/ISRI transaction guidance emphasizes making payment terms and required documents explicit, including which party’s weights govern settlement. Ask the yard to explain how its quote translates into payment after inspection, weighing, and grading. ReMA/ISRI specifications and market information provide industry context, not a guaranteed quote from a local yard.
Step 4: Compare the full offer, not just the headline price
Ask buyers to quote on the same material description and estimated quantity. Compare the factors that determine what you will actually receive:

- Material category and grade used for the quote
- Whether the quote is based on gross or net weight and how final weight is determined
- Inspection or grading after arrival, and possible contamination or handling deductions
- Minimum quantities, fees, and any appointment requirements
- Payment form and timing
- Distance, loading effort, and transport costs
A higher quoted rate may not produce a better result if it comes with a different weight basis, deductions, fees, or a costly trip. Ask each buyer to explain the likely calculation rather than treating an initial quote as a guaranteed payout.

Keep pieces stable and contained in transit, and protect yourself from sharp edges and heavy loads. Call ahead about unusual items, electronics, batteries, cylinders, sealed equipment, or anything that might contain hazardous material; facilities have different acceptance and handling policies. Do not dismantle an item just to make it easier to sell unless you can do so safely and the buyer wants it prepared that way.

If you suspect that scrap is radioactively contaminated, do not touch it. The U.S. EPA instructs people to contact the scrap-yard manager and their state radiation control office. Read the EPA’s guidance on radioactive scrap metal.
Step 6: Complete the sale and keep your records
Follow the yard’s current seller-verification and payment process. Identification, recordkeeping, and payment rules depend on the jurisdiction and the type of transaction. For example, ReMA/ISRI’s state-law compilation covers state-specific provisions, while UK Government guidance describes licensing and supplier-verification duties, as well as a cash-payment prohibition in England and Wales. Those examples are not interchangeable; check current rules where you are selling.
Keep the receipt, weight ticket, and transaction records. This is especially important if you are selling for a business or on behalf of another owner.
