The right route depends on your audience, available placements, and how much sales and operations work you can take on. You can also combine approaches.
Start with your audience and ad inventory
Before approaching advertisers or installing ad code, make a clear inventory of what your site can offer. Describe your audience and traffic sources accurately, and identify the placements, formats, and dates available. Avoid unsupported claims about audience size or quality; advertisers need a credible picture of who they can reach and where an ad will appear.
- Audience: Who reads the site, and what content or needs bring them there?
- Inventory: Which pages or placements can carry advertising, and when are they available?
- Format: Is the offer a standard display placement, a sponsorship, or a clearly disclosed native ad?
There is no universal website-ad rate established by the cited sources. What an advertiser may pay depends on factors such as audience, geography, format, buyer demand, season, and inventory quality.
Choose how to sell and manage ads
The main distinction is who finds the buyer and who handles campaign delivery. A direct sale puts more of that work in your hands; networks and ad-management tools can automate or organize parts of it.

| Route | Who finds buyers | Publisher’s role | Control and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct sales | You approach advertisers and agree on campaigns. | Sell the placement, coordinate creative and dates, fulfill the campaign, and report delivery. | More control and a closer advertiser relationship, with more sales and operations work. |
| Ad network | The network connects inventory with advertisers. | Meet the network’s eligibility and policy requirements, implement its setup, and monitor performance. | Less need to find each buyer individually; advertiser and creative controls depend on the network. |
| Ad serving or sell-side tools | Depends on the tool and transaction type; tools can support direct and programmatic sales. | Use the platform to manage inventory and campaign delivery. | Can help organize operations or automate parts of selling and delivery; access to a tool does not guarantee access to every feature or buyer. |
Sell directly to advertisers
Direct selling can suit a site whose audience and subject matter make a clear fit for specific advertisers. You identify prospects, pitch the opportunity, agree on the campaign, and take responsibility for delivery and reporting. Prepare a concise media kit with audience information, inventory, placements, formats, availability, and a way to report results. This is a practical starting point, not a prescribed industry template.

Google News Initiative reports that, on average, direct ads sell for two to four times more than programmatic ads. The page does not state a publication year or explain the sample and methodology behind that comparison. Treat it as a source-specific reported average, not a forecast of what your site will earn.
Use an ad network
A network can connect your site’s inventory with advertisers without requiring you to find every buyer yourself. Google describes AdSense as a way to monetize a site with relevant ads. Its eligibility guidance calls for your own high-quality, original content that attracts an audience, access to the site, and compliance with current program policies. Review the current requirements rather than assuming acceptance or a particular level of traffic will qualify your site.
Google announced changes to AdSense’s revenue-share structure and a move to impression-based publisher payments on November 2, 2023. That announcement is dated, not a current rate card; check the current AdSense terms for applicable payment mechanics.
Use ad-serving or sell-side tools
Ad-serving and sell-side tools can help manage inventory and campaign delivery, and may support direct as well as programmatic transactions. Choose a tool to solve a specific operating need, such as organizing placements or managing delivery. Confirm what features, buyer relationships, and eligibility requirements actually apply to your account.
Set clear campaign terms before launch
For direct sales, put the practical details in writing before an ad runs. Agree on dates, placement, creative, measurement, reporting, payment, and what happens if the campaign cannot be delivered as planned. These are planning points to clarify with an advertiser, not universal contract terms.
- Define the offer: Identify the placement, format, pages or section, and campaign dates.
- Approve the creative: Establish who supplies it, what specifications apply, and how it will be reviewed.
- Agree on measurement: Decide what delivery information you will track and how results will be reported.
- Confirm payment and remedies: Set payment timing and address any shortfall or make-good arrangement before launch.
Protect reader trust and ad quality
Advertising should be recognizable as advertising and should not undermine the credibility of your editorial content. Clear labeling and careful implementation also help reduce avoidable disputes with advertisers and platforms.

Label paid content clearly
Google says native ad attribution should make clear that a unit is “Ad,” “Advertisement,” or “Sponsored.” Paid content should not be presented in a way that leads readers to mistake it for independent editorial material.
Disclose relevant data practices
Google’s publisher policy calls for a privacy policy explaining data collection and technologies associated with Google products, including cookies, web beacons, IP addresses, or other identifiers. The legal disclosures required for your site depend on your jurisdiction and implementation; platform guidance is not a complete legal analysis.
Monitor traffic and implementation
Google advises publishers to monitor traffic and check for rejected ad requests and invalid activity. Do not encourage users to click ads or design placements so that ads are difficult to distinguish from editorial content. If you use a network, review its current policies and reporting before installing code.

Declare authorized programmatic sellers where relevant
The ads.txt standard lets a publisher publicly identify authorized sellers of its digital ad inventory. IAB Tech Lab describes its mission as “Increase transparency in the programmatic advertising ecosystem.” Google says ads.txt is not mandatory for AdSense but is highly recommended. If you use it, follow the current specification and your partners’ instructions; IAB Tech Lab’s page reports a September 14, 2026 update adding OWNERDOMAIN and MANAGERDOMAIN values.
