How To Sell Products Online & Increase Your Sales [2026]

Selling products online can be profitable without a large warehouse, a huge audience, or a single dependence on paid advertising. But sales volume is only part of the decision: a channel that consumes margin through fees, shipping, refunds, and advertising is not a healthy business.

For 2026, choose a selling model that fits your product, publish accurate product data, remove checkout uncertainty, and measure profit—not just orders. The steps below apply to physical goods, digital products, made-to-order items, print-on-demand products, and services.

1. Choose where you will sell

Most online sellers can combine channels rather than choosing only one. Each channel solves a different problem.

Channel Strength Main financial risk
Your own online store Control over branding, customer information, checkout, and merchandising You must generate traffic and pay for software, payment processing, fulfillment, and marketing
Online marketplaces Existing customer demand and search traffic Marketplace fees, intense competition, account restrictions, and dependence on platform rules
Social and discovery channels Product exposure where customers already browse Unpredictable reach and possible advertising costs
Email and SMS Access to previous customers and abandoned-cart shoppers Consent, unsubscribe, privacy, and marketing-law obligations

A first-party store gives you more control, but it does not automatically create demand. A marketplace can bring buyers faster, but you give up some control over fees, visibility, fulfillment standards, and account access.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If you use Shopify, connected marketplaces and discovery destinations are managed as Sales channels. In the admin, open Sales channels in the left navigation, or go to Settings > Sales channels. Some channels are installed through the Shopify App Store but then appear in the admin as sales channels. Availability varies by country, product category, product data, shipping setup, and fulfillment performance. Adding a channel does not guarantee sales.

2. Work out your unit economics before promoting anything

Before buying inventory or running advertisements, calculate what one order contributes after variable costs.

Contribution margin per order = selling price − product cost − packaging − shipping subsidy − payment fees − platform fees − expected refund cost − advertising cost.

For illustration, a $60 order might look attractive until the numbers are added:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Amount
Customer payment $60.00
Product cost −$22.00
Packaging and fulfillment −$5.00
Shipping subsidy −$7.00
Payment and platform fees −$4.00
Advertising cost allocated to the order −$12.00
Contribution before overhead and tax $10.00

This is an illustrative calculation, not a market statistic or net profit. Software, wages, storage, insurance, income tax, and owner compensation still have to be paid. It is a useful test of whether an additional order helps the business.

Do not assume that free shipping always increases profit. It may improve conversion while reducing the amount left from each order. Test a free-shipping threshold, product-specific shipping, or a bundle, and compare contribution margin rather than conversion rate alone.

3. Build a product catalog that does not create avoidable problems

In Shopify, add and edit products from the Products page in the admin. A complete product record should include:

  • A specific title that identifies what the product is.
  • Price and currency.
  • Availability and inventory status.
  • Clear variant choices, such as size, color, quantity, or configuration.
  • Several useful images, including the product in use where appropriate.
  • A description covering benefits, specifications, compatibility, limitations, and care.
  • Delivery expectations, shipping charges, and return terms.
  • A way for customers to contact support.

Vague titles and generic descriptions hurt both customers and product-discovery systems. The information on an advertisement, product feed, and landing page should agree. Google may restrict or disapprove products when prices, variants, availability, images, or descriptions conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle variants and identifiers accurately

If you submit products to Google Merchant Center, group related variants with item_group_id. Apparel commonly needs attributes such as color, size, gender, age_group, size_type, and size_system.

Do not invent a GTIN. Submit gtin when the manufacturer assigned one. If there is no GTIN, Google may require mpn and brand, depending on the product. Google’s product data specification explains the requirements by category.

4. Set up payments before you send traffic

In Shopify, payment settings are under Settings > Payments.

  1. For Shopify Payments, select Activate Shopify Payments.
  2. Enter the requested personal, business, address, and identification information.
  3. Submit the account for verification.
  4. Use Manage in the Shopify Payments section to finish configuration.

To add another provider, open Settings > Payments, select Add payment methods under Additional payment methods, search for the provider, select it, and click Activate. You may need provider credentials or a separate approval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payment availability depends on your country, business details, Shopify plan, and existing configuration. A provider shown on a public gateway list may not be available in your store. Stripe is also not necessarily a separate Shopify gateway: in countries that support Shopify Payments, Stripe generally will not appear separately because it operates as Shopify Payments’ banking partner. A third-party provider can also create Shopify third-party transaction fees in addition to the provider’s processing fees. Check current pricing and payment terms before comparing providers.

5. Make shipping and returns financially clear

Configure shipping rates in your store’s shipping settings. Rates can vary by destination, order weight, product type, and delivery speed. Shipping profiles are useful when different products need different rate structures—for example, small items shipped by mail and oversized items shipped separately.

Shopify’s Checkout settings also include how the store collects customer email addresses for promotional marketing. Review those settings and applicable consent requirements before sending campaigns.

Before advertising, test the complete customer journey:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select every important product variant.
  2. Confirm inventory and availability messages.
  3. Check tax calculations.
  4. Calculate shipping to several destinations.
  5. Apply a discount code.
  6. Authorize a payment.
  7. Complete checkout on a phone using cellular data.
  8. Review confirmation, order-status, cancellation, and refund messages.

A common conversion failure is showing a competitive product price and revealing an unexpectedly expensive shipping charge at the last step. Display the shipping cost or a credible estimate on the product page whenever possible.

Shipping promises in the United States

Under the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, a seller needs a reasonable basis for its stated shipping time. If no shipping time is stated, the seller generally needs a reasonable basis to believe it can ship within 30 days.

The 30-day rule does not authorize unsupported claims such as “ships in two days.” If an order cannot ship on time, the seller must provide the required delay notice, cancellation option, and refund process. Do not advertise a delivery promise based only on an optimistic estimate from a supplier or carrier.

6. Use Google’s free product listings carefully

Google’s free listings can show eligible products across surfaces including Search, Maps, Images, Lens, YouTube, Gemini, the Shopping tab, and product modules on Business Profiles. They are not paid-per-click placements, but eligibility does not guarantee impressions or sales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an existing Merchant Center account, check Merchant Center > Marketing > Marketing methods > Free listings. For U.S. products sold online, shipping settings or shipping costs submitted through the shipping attribute are required. Your website must also make its return policy available, and Google recommends adding return-policy information in Merchant Center.

Common product data includes:

  • id
  • title
  • link
  • image_link
  • price
  • description
  • availability

Open Products > Needs attention to find errors. Incorrect prices, missing identifiers, weak images, bad variant grouping, and differences between the feed and your website can limit visibility.

  1. Open the Products section in Merchant Center.
  2. Choose Add products one by one.
  3. Enter the product details.
  4. Click Save or Save & add another.

A feed or store integration is usually more practical for a larger catalog. See Google’s free listings guidance for current eligibility conditions.

7. Improve the product page before increasing traffic

Most product-page improvements work by reducing uncertainty. A visitor should quickly understand what the item does, whether it fits their needs, what it costs to receive, and what happens if it is unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Put the primary benefit near the top of the page.
  • Show the product being used, not only on a plain background.
  • Make the price, stock status, and main call to action visible without excessive scrolling.
  • Explain dimensions, materials, compatibility, care, and limitations.
  • Make variant selection obvious and prevent incomplete selections.
  • Show delivery timing and total costs before payment.
  • State the return process in plain language.
  • Use genuine reviews that describe the actual customer experience.
  • Test the page on a phone over a normal mobile connection.

Do not manufacture scarcity, publish fake reviews, or imply that an endorsement is independent when the person was paid or received free products. The FTC says material connections should be disclosed clearly in the same context as the endorsement. Its endorsement guidance provides examples.

8. Measure the funnel and the money it produces

GA4 does not automatically record every ecommerce action on a general website. Events such as add_to_cart, begin_checkout, and purchase need to be implemented with the appropriate parameters. If required parameters are missing, an event may be treated as a custom event and appear incorrectly in reports.

A useful funnel is:

  1. view_item
  2. select_item
  3. add_to_cart
  4. begin_checkout
  5. add_shipping_info
  6. add_payment_info
  7. purchase
  8. refund, when relevant

Use GA4’s Ecommerce purchases report after implementation and use DebugView to check events while testing. Shopify may automatically collect some events, including add-to-cart, checkout, and purchase events, when Google Analytics is configured through Shopify. Verify event names and parameters rather than assuming the setup is complete. Google’s ecommerce setup documentation covers testing.

Track at least the following:

Metric What it helps answer
Add-to-cart rate Do product pages create enough interest?
Checkout-start rate Are shoppers willing to begin buying?
Purchase conversion rate Where do checkout or trust problems occur?
Average order value Can bundles or recommendations increase order size?
Revenue per visitor Is traffic producing enough commercial value?
Refund rate Are product expectations or quality misaligned?
Repeat-purchase rate Does the first order create future value?
Contribution margin Does the sale remain worthwhile after variable costs?

Revenue alone can mislead. A campaign may generate orders but lose money after advertising, fulfillment, payment charges, returns, and discounts.

9. Use email and SMS for repeat sales—lawfully

Email and SMS can be less expensive than acquiring every buyer through advertising, especially for replenishable or regularly purchased products. Separate receipts, shipping notices, and password resets from promotional campaigns.

For commercial email, use accurate sender and subject information, include a valid postal address, provide a clear working unsubscribe method, and process opt-outs promptly. A previous purchase does not allow a business to ignore applicable marketing requirements. Review the FTC’s CAN-SPAM materials and any rules that apply to SMS, privacy, and your customers’ locations.

10. Increase sales through controlled experiments

Do not change the price, product page, shipping offer, and checkout simultaneously and then guess which change worked. Test one meaningful variable at a time when practical.

Useful tests include:

  • The product-page headline or main image.
  • Placement of reviews and delivery information.
  • A bundle versus a single-product offer.
  • A free-shipping threshold.
  • Checkout form length.
  • Additional payment methods.
  • Product recommendations.
  • Abandoned-cart message timing.

For each test, record the audience, dates, traffic source, conversion metric, revenue, refunds, and margin. Do not call a winner based on clicks alone or a small short-term fluctuation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible order of operations is:

  1. Repair broken checkout, payment, and confirmation flows.
  2. Correct product, price, inventory, and shipping data.
  3. Improve product-page clarity and mobile usability.
  4. Increase the quality of traffic, not merely its volume.
  5. Add retention campaigns for customers who have opted in.
  6. Test offers, pricing, bundles, and merchandising.

A practical launch checklist

  • Choose a primary store, marketplace, or combination of channels.
  • Calculate contribution margin for each major product.
  • Publish accurate prices, variants, images, stock, shipping, and return information.
  • Activate and test payment methods.
  • Test tax, shipping, discounts, mobile checkout, refunds, and customer emails.
  • Connect Merchant Center if free listings suit your products.
  • Check the Merchant Center Needs attention tab.
  • Set up and verify ecommerce events in GA4.
  • Write down a customer-acquisition budget and a maximum acceptable cost per order.
  • Review sales by contribution margin, refund rate, and repeat purchases each month.

FAQ

Do I need a large inventory to start selling online?

No. Inventory requirements depend on the model. Digital products, services, made-to-order goods, dropshipping, and print-on-demand can require little or no inventory, while stocked physical products require cash for purchasing, storage, and possible unsold stock.

Are Google free product listings guaranteed to generate sales?

No. Eligible products may appear across Google surfaces without a per-click charge, but visibility depends on product data, relevance, competition, customer demand, and policy compliance. Google does not guarantee placement or sales.

Does GA4 automatically track online store sales?

Not in every setup. Ecommerce events and their required parameters generally need to be implemented. Shopify can automatically collect some events when Google Analytics is configured through Shopify, but you should verify the implementation with DebugView and the Ecommerce purchases report.

What is the best way to increase online sales?

First fix broken checkout, payment, product, inventory, and shipping information. Then improve product-page clarity, attract better-qualified traffic, build lawful retention campaigns, and test one offer or merchandising change at a time while measuring contribution margin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Increase online sales by making more profitable purchases easier—not by adding every possible channel or discounting blindly. Start with accurate product information, reliable payments, transparent delivery and returns, and a mobile-tested checkout. Then measure the full funnel from product view to refund, including advertising and fulfillment costs. A smaller number of profitable repeat customers is usually more valuable than a larger number of low-margin orders.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
