You can sell on Amazon without forming an LLC, but opening an account is only the first step. Before buying inventory, check that your product is eligible, confirm its product identifier, compare the selling plans and fulfillment costs, and estimate whether the numbers leave room for a margin. Amazon’s tools can help model fees; they cannot guarantee sales or profit.
Start with eligibility—not a product trend
A product that looks popular is not automatically a product you can list or fulfill. Before committing to inventory, check whether its category is open, whether Amazon approval or a Professional plan is required, and whether law or Amazon policy restricts the item. If you plan to use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), check FBA eligibility and restrictions too. Amazon notes that some categories require approval and some products cannot be sold by third-party sellers. Review its seller FAQ and the applicable compliance rules before ordering.
Also confirm that you have the right to sell the brand and can supply the product identifier the listing requires. Amazon describes product IDs as Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), including UPC, ISBN, EAN, and JAN. UPCs are commonly printed as barcodes on product packaging; in some cases, you may apply for a GTIN exemption instead. Amazon’s registration guide explains the identifier and registration process. Brand Registry is a separate, free program for eligible brand rights owners; it requires a pending or registered trademark and is not a prerequisite for every seller.
Register as an individual or business
You do not need to be an LLC to sell on Amazon. Amazon says a seller who is not incorporated can select an individual business type during registration. Its US guide describes five stages: business information, seller information, billing information, store and product information, and identity verification.

Prepare consistent details and documents before starting. Amazon’s guide asks for a government-issued ID and proof of residential business address dated within the previous 180 days. It describes photo or video-call identity verification. Amazon says many registrations can be completed in hours and identity checks usually take three business days or less, but timelines vary; those are estimates, not a service guarantee. Requirements can depend on the seller’s circumstances and marketplace.
Compare the selling plans and the full cost stack
As of October 3, 2026, Amazon’s US pricing page lists the Individual plan at $0.99 per item sold and the Professional plan at $39.99 per month. These plan charges are only one part of the cost of selling. Referral fees vary by category and generally use a percentage of the total price or a minimum fee, whichever is greater. The fee category Amazon applies may not match the category a customer sees, so verify the fee for the specific item in Seller Central.

| Plan | Amazon US price | How to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $0.99 per item sold, per Amazon’s pricing page checked October 3, 2026 | Compare the per-item charge with expected monthly sales and the tools you need. |
| Professional | $39.99 per month, per Amazon’s pricing page checked October 3, 2026 | Compare the recurring charge with expected volume and whether your category or workflow requires this plan. |
For plan cost alone, $39.99 equals about 41 Individual-plan item charges at $0.99 each; the break-even point is therefore around 41 items in a month, before considering plan features or other fees. That arithmetic is not a recommendation: check current plan terms and whether your category, tools, or operating needs favor one option.
Build a per-unit estimate that includes more than Amazon’s plan charge and referral fee. Depending on the product and operation, account for product cost, inbound shipping and prep, fulfillment, storage, returns, advertising or promotions, and applicable taxes and compliance costs. FBA costs vary with product category, size, and weight; possible charges also include storage, aged-inventory, and disposal fees. Recheck fees and eligibility close to launch because they can change. Amazon’s FBA fee guide describes cost categories.

Use Amazon’s estimates as inputs, not a profit verdict
Amazon’s Revenue Calculator lets sellers enter catalog information or define an item using dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping charges, then adjust fulfillment inputs to compare Amazon fulfillment with a seller’s own fulfillment. Seller Central also offers estimated fees per unit sold and a Fee Preview report. The result is an estimate based on the information entered—not a guarantee of actual costs or profitability. Include expenses the calculator may not capture for your business, such as your own labor and operating overhead.
Compare FBA with fulfilling orders yourself
FBA is optional. Amazon describes its basic setup as registering for FBA, listing eligible products and assigning them to FBA, then checking restrictions, policies, and cost estimates before choosing products. With seller fulfillment, you handle the storage, packing, shipping, and related customer-service workload yourself. Neither route is best for every product or seller.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Create a listing customers can evaluate
Once eligibility, identifiers, and the cost model check out, make the listing accurate and easy to understand. Amazon’s beginner guidance recommends a clear title, good product photos, a description that explains the item, and relevant search terms. Present the product’s actual features and limitations; use language customers would plausibly search for without stuffing unrelated terms. These are listing fundamentals, not promises of search rank, conversion, or sales.

Keep listing claims consistent with the product and any applicable category requirements. Before publishing, verify that the product attributes, images, identifier, brand information, price, and fulfillment selection all refer to the item you intend to sell.
A measured path to a first sale
- Confirm your marketplace and seller details. Decide which marketplace and business location apply, then prepare consistent billing, identity, and address information for registration.
- Clear eligibility and rights. Check product and category restrictions, any approval requirements, brand rights, intended fulfillment eligibility, and GTIN or exemption needs.
- Estimate demand and landed cost. Assess whether customers may buy the item and calculate the cost to get sellable inventory ready, including product, shipping, and prep costs. Do not place a large order on popularity alone.
- Choose a plan against your actual operation. Compare the Individual and Professional plan charges with expected monthly volume, required tools, and any category requirements.
- Model fulfillment and fees. Enter realistic product information in the Revenue Calculator, compare FBA with seller fulfillment, and check Seller Central fee estimates and inventory-related charges.
- Build and review the listing. Use accurate product facts, clear images, a useful description, and relevant customer search language.
- Keep commitments proportional to the model. Start with inventory and advertising commitments that the estimated margin can support. Track real costs and results, then update assumptions before scaling.
Amazon’s beginner guide also covers pricing, fulfillment, promotion, advertising, and reviews as separate workstreams. It reports that more than 60% of sales in the Amazon store come from independent sellers, most of which are small and medium-sized businesses, attributing that statistic to its 2024 Small Business Empowerment Report. That describes the store overall; it does not predict an individual seller’s odds of success. None of the setup, listing, or promotion steps guarantees sales or profit.
