To sell household items online, match the listing to the item: use local pickup for bulky or awkward-to-ship goods, and consider a shipping marketplace for items that are easy to pack. Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp are options for local sales; Mercari is built around shippable items. No platform can guarantee a fast sale—the outcome depends on local demand, the item, its price, and how well the listing is presented.
Choose a selling method that fits the item
Start with the item’s size, weight, fragility, and likely buyer pool. A high asking price does not necessarily mean a better result: compare what you may actually keep after fees, shipping, packing materials, and the time required to handle the sale.

Prepare a listing buyers can trust
- Clean and photograph the item. Use clear, well-lit photos that show the whole item. Photograph damage and wear, too, rather than leaving buyers to discover them later.
- Describe it specifically. Include the brand if known, condition, dimensions, color, and every material flaw. Accurate measurements help local buyers decide whether an item will fit their space or vehicle.
- Price from completed sales. Look for comparable items that actually sold where that information is available. The Better Business Bureau advises sellers using auction sites to focus on completed sale prices rather than minimum bid prices. An asking price alone is not proof that buyers will pay it.
- Set a realistic price. Leave room for negotiation if you are willing to accept offers, but do not hide defects to support a higher price.
- Keep the listing current. Respond promptly, agree on the transaction details, and mark the item sold when the sale is complete. OfferUp says response time and rate appear on seller profiles and recommends keeping listings current.

Plan shipping before you accept a sale
For a shipped sale, check the marketplace’s current eligibility, package-size limits, shipping options, and rules before you publish the listing. Weigh and measure the packaged item—not just the bare item—so you can choose an appropriate shipping option. Mercari asks sellers to package items carefully; for shipping arranged independently, its guidance recommends using tracking.
Boxes and protective packing supplies can help prevent damage, but they are optional for shipping and unnecessary for local pickup. Include their cost, along with shipping and any applicable platform fees, when estimating what you will keep. The BBB recommends reviewing the applicable fee terms, including whether charges are percentage-based, flat, or both. Marketplace fees and policies can change, so check current terms before listing rather than relying on an assumed fee or a claim that a platform is free.

Handle payment and pickup safely
For an in-person handoff
Before meeting, agree on the price, time, location, and payment method. OfferUp recommends choosing a well-lit public place, avoiding gift cards, personal checks, and wire transfers, and clarifying who will transport a large or heavy item. Do not meet an unfamiliar buyer alone, and avoid sharing personal information that is not needed to complete the sale.
For a shipped sale
Confirm payment through the marketplace before sending the item. Use a trackable shipping method; for a high-value item, consider signature confirmation. Keep transaction communication and shipping records so you can refer to them if a problem arises.

- Choose a method suited to the item: pickup for bulky goods, shipping for items that are easy to pack.
- Make the listing easy to evaluate with clear photos, measurements, condition details, and honest disclosure of flaws.
- Base the price on comparable completed sales where possible, not simply on other sellers’ asking prices.
- Reply promptly and make pickup or shipping logistics clear.
- Compare expected net proceeds and the effort involved before choosing a platform.
These steps can reduce avoidable friction, but they cannot guarantee a sale or establish that one marketplace is fastest everywhere. Local demand and the individual item matter, and marketplace features and rules may change.
