To sell new or used physical books in Amazon’s US store, source inventory, register as a seller, match each copy to the exact catalog edition, describe its condition accurately, calculate your costs, and choose whether to ship orders yourself or use Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). Your list price is not your take-home amount: plan fees, shipping, packaging, and the book’s purchase cost all affect whether a sale is worthwhile.
1. Choose and source books to sell
You can list books you already own or buy inventory specifically for resale. Potential sources include wholesalers, publishers, distributors, library sales, auctions, used-book stores, yard sales, estate sales, and thrift shops.
Before buying a used copy, inspect it for damage and compare its likely selling price with your total costs. Amazon’s Seller app can scan barcodes and provide pricing and sales information. A book’s Best Seller ranking can help you judge demand, but it is only a signal—not a prediction or guarantee of a sale. Amazon also notes that some types of books may be prohibited, so check the listing and restriction workflow in Seller Central for the specific item.
2. Choose a selling plan and register
Amazon’s US pricing page lists two selling plans. Both are in addition to applicable selling fees, and the listed amounts were reviewed on October 8, 2026; check Amazon’s current pricing page before registering because fees can change.

Compare the per-item charges you expect under Individual with the monthly subscription for Professional, and consider which tools you need. The fee figures above are plan charges, not the total cost of selling a book.
3. Match the exact title, edition, and format
Search Amazon’s catalog for the specific copy you have before creating an offer. Use the ISBN when available: it helps identify a book’s edition and publisher as well as format-related physical properties. Confirm that the catalog entry matches the copy’s edition and format; a similar title or cover is not enough.

If the book has no ISBN, Amazon says you may need an exemption to list it. Whether a particular book or seller account is eligible depends on the live listing and restriction workflow in Seller Central.
4. Describe the copy honestly
Choose the condition that reflects the book you will actually ship. Amazon’s condition options for books include New, Used—Like New, Used—Very Good, Used—Good, and Used—Acceptable. Note relevant wear and defects, such as writing, highlighting, a damaged cover, missing dust jacket, or other flaws. Do not use a better condition label to make an offer appear more attractive.

Amazon’s guide puts the principle plainly: “Accurate descriptions build buyer trust, and competitive pricing helps your books stand out.”
5. Set a price that accounts for costs
Compare offers for the same edition and format in similar condition, then work out what remains after selling and fulfillment costs. Amazon’s US pricing page, reviewed October 8, 2026, lists a 15% referral fee for the “Media – Books, DVD, Music, Software, Video” category and a $1.80 media closing fee per item, in addition to the applicable plan charge. These figures are time-sensitive; verify them on Amazon’s pricing page.

Build a book-specific estimate rather than assuming a particular price guarantees profit. Include your acquisition cost, applicable Amazon fees, packing materials, shipping if you fulfill the order, and any relevant FBA charges. Amazon’s Revenue Calculator estimates fees and costs; Amazon cautions that actual costs may vary.
- Enter the specific book’s expected sale price and its weight and dimensions.
- Choose the fulfillment route you are considering and review the estimated costs.
- Subtract the estimated costs and your inventory purchase cost from the sale price to see the estimated amount remaining before any other business expenses.
- Recheck the assumptions if your shipping cost, condition, sale price, or fulfillment choice changes.
Amazon reported that independent sellers in its US store averaged more than $375,000 in annual sales in 2025. That is Amazon’s aggregate sales figure across independent sellers—not a book-specific average, a forecast for a new seller, or profit after expenses.

6. Choose how to fulfill orders: FBM or FBA
With seller fulfillment (often called Fulfilled by Merchant, or FBM), you store the books, pack and ship each order, and handle customer service and returns. With Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), you send inventory to Amazon, which handles picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. Estimate the costs for your book’s price, weight, and dimensions before choosing: FBA adds fulfillment and storage costs, while FBM requires your own time, shipping workflow, and storage.

7. Pack books carefully if you ship them yourself
Protect corners, edges, and any dust jacket so the copy arrives in the condition you described. Amazon suggests protective materials such as a bag, craft paper, or bubble wrap, followed by a snug padded envelope or box with little room for movement. A book mailer envelope is an optional supply for seller-fulfilled orders, not something an FBA seller needs to use for each customer shipment.
