To sell a gaming PC, identify its exact parts and condition, back up and reset Windows, photograph the actual machine, price it against comparable sold systems, and choose a sales channel after checking its fees and payment rules. A defensible price depends on the PC’s components, condition, location, and selling channel—there is no reliable one-size-fits-all figure.
1. Identify the PC and document its condition
Before writing a listing, make an inventory of what the buyer will receive. For a custom build, record the exact model where you can verify it; distinguish confirmed specifications from estimates.
- Processor and graphics card
- RAM capacity and storage capacity and type
- Motherboard, power supply, case, and cooling, if known
- Windows edition, if applicable, and whether a license is included or transferable
- Included peripherals, cables, boxes, or other accessories
- Modifications, repairs, missing parts, cosmetic wear, and known faults
State what you have and have not tested. If you checked that the PC boots, say that; do not imply that you benchmarked or stress-tested it unless you actually did. If you ran a test, identify what you tested and when. eBay’s desktop listing guidance recommends detailed descriptions and complete item specifics, while its condition policy requires sellers to describe flaws. eBay’s listing guidance and item condition policy provide examples of the information expected on that marketplace.
2. Back up your data and reset Windows
Do not hand over a PC with your personal files or accounts still on it. Microsoft’s instructions for selling or gifting a Windows device advise backing up needed files, resetting the device, and removing it from your Microsoft account. Follow the instructions for the Windows version installed, since the Recovery settings route differs between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s reset instructions explain the reset process.

- Back up files you want to keep, including browser data and password-manager information, and confirm you can access the backups elsewhere.
- Use Windows Recovery settings to reset the PC, following Microsoft’s current steps for its installed Windows version.
- Remove the device from your Microsoft account using Microsoft’s sell-or-gift guidance.
- After the reset, check that the PC starts to the setup experience rather than opening your old user account.
A normal Windows reset should not be represented as meeting a particular secure-erasure standard unless you have followed a process that establishes that. If you are concerned about sensitive data, consult guidance appropriate to your storage device and security needs before selling.
3. Photograph and write the listing
Photograph the actual PC, not a stock image or a picture of a similar build. Use clear, well-lit views that show the case, front and rear ports, included accessories, and any visible wear. If you open the case to show components, make sure the photos accurately represent the machine being sold. eBay calls for actual-item photos for used, refurbished, or flawed items and recommends clear images and detailed views in its desktop listing guidance.

Put the most useful verified specifications in the title, then fill in the marketplace’s item-specific fields. In the description, spell out what is included, summarize condition, disclose defects, and explain test results without overstating them. Avoid vague claims such as “high-end” or “runs every game” unless you define and support them.
4. Set a price using sold comparables
Search for sold gaming PCs with similar processor and graphics-card generations, memory, storage, condition, and included extras. Compare completed sales rather than treating current asking prices as evidence of what buyers paid. eBay says its Product Research pricing guidance is based on similar items sold during the previous 90 days; see its desktop listing guidance.

Adjust your expectation for differences such as condition, missing accessories, or a less desirable configuration. Recheck comparable sales close to listing time because used-PC prices can move. Without the computer’s specifications, condition, location, and chosen channel, a specific dollar estimate would not be dependable.
5. Choose a selling channel and calculate what you will keep
Choose a marketplace or local sale based on the trade-offs that matter to you: likely buyer reach, seller workload, net proceeds after fees and shipping, payment protections, shipping burden, and handoff convenience. Confirm the current terms of the specific platform you plan to use; fees and protections are not interchangeable across services.

For eBay, fees can depend on factors including category, price, listing format, and seller circumstances. Check the current fee information for your location and account before setting a minimum acceptable price. eBay also prohibits completing an eBay-originated sale off-platform; its selling fees information and off-platform transactions policy explain the relevant rules. Moving an eBay transaction elsewhere can also affect eligibility for the platform’s protections.

Check payment directly in the marketplace or payment provider account before handing over or shipping the PC. A buyer’s message, email, or screenshot is not confirmation that funds cleared. eBay warns sellers not to accept an overpayment and refund the excess; its payment guidance also says cash is not recommended except when a buyer is paying at pickup. For a shipped sale, choose a shipping method and packing approach appropriate for the specific case and components, and document the PC’s condition and how it was packed before dispatch. No single packaging method fits every build. For local pickup, agree on the handoff and payment method in advance, and do not release the computer until payment is confirmed.
