How to Self-Exclude From Online Sports Betting

Self-exclusion is jurisdiction-specific. Find the regulator for your sportsbook, check the program’s coverage and terms, and enroll through its official route.

To self-exclude from online sports betting, register with the official program for the jurisdiction that licenses the betting service. There is no single global register: the available program, its coverage, and its duration depend on where you live and where the operator is licensed. Start by checking the regulator’s official instructions before you enroll.

Start by checking which jurisdiction and betting service are involved

Find the country and, where relevant, the state or territory regulating the sportsbook. Check the operator’s licensing information, then use that regulator’s official self-exclusion page. A betting brand may offer different products or operate under different obligations in different markets, so do not assume one registration covers every account or service you use.

The examples below show how approaches differ; they are not universal instructions. If your location is not listed, use your local regulator’s official site to identify the program that applies.

How to enroll in the right self-exclusion program

  1. Identify the regulator. Confirm the country and state or territory relevant to you and check the sportsbook’s licensing information.
  2. Open the regulator’s official self-exclusion page. Follow its link to the named program or enrollment route. For Great Britain, the Gambling Commission identifies GAMSTOP ONLINE for a single request covering online gambling sites and apps run by businesses licensed there. In Australia, BetStop is the national register for licensed online and phone wagering.
  3. Read the scope and terms before submitting. Confirm which operators and products are included, the available period, and whether you can extend, shorten, or end exclusion early. Do not assume sports betting coverage also includes online casino games or other products.
  4. Complete the official identity and registration checks. Enter accurate personal details and follow the scheme’s on-screen instructions. For BetStop, the stated requirements include a mobile phone, email access, and an Australian driver licence, passport, or Medicare card; its service says to call if you do not have one of those documents. BetStop registration is described as taking about five minutes, and registrants can nominate up to five support people. Source: BetStop.
  5. Save confirmation and follow the scheme’s next steps. Keep the confirmation and check the official guidance about existing accounts, balances, and marketing. Do not assume an account closure or a separate state or territory registration happens automatically unless the program says so.
  6. Use the official complaint route if a covered operator appears to breach the rules. BetStop says a person can complain about a wagering provider they believe has breached self-exclusion rules. Source: ACMA, BetStop.

What to know about Australia’s BetStop rules

BetStop is a free Australian Government initiative for licensed Australian online and phone wagering. While registration is active, it is intended to block new betting accounts, bets, and direct marketing from covered providers. It does not cover online casino games or illegal gambling services. If you already have a separate state or territory self-exclusion registration, you must register with BetStop separately. Source: BetStop.

Self-exclusion is one part of a financial and support plan

Self-exclusion can restrict access to covered betting services, but it is not a substitute for help with gambling-related harm. The UK Gambling Commission advises: “In addition to self-exclusion, you should also seek support.” Contact a qualified counsellor or a free local gambling-help service, and consider asking a trusted person for practical support if that feels safe for you.
