Use a unique password and the strongest multifactor authentication (MFA) your brokerage supports. A passkey or hardware security key can be a good choice when it works with the firm and your device; an authenticator app is generally preferable to SMS or email codes when available. Then enable account alerts, secure and update your phone, and use only a trusted route to sign in. Brokerage features and recovery options vary, so check compatibility before relying on a particular method.
Choose an authentication method your brokerage supports
MFA adds a second check beyond your password. The most secure practical option is one that the brokerage and your device support, that you can recover if a phone or credential is lost, and that does not depend on a phone number vulnerable to takeover. The SEC notes that investment sites and devices do not all support passkeys; availability of other methods also varies.

| Method | What it offers and what to check |
|---|---|
| Passkey | A passkey uses a private key associated with the account rather than a conventional password. Confirm that the brokerage, its app or site, and your device support it. Check how to recover access if the device or credential is lost. SEC investor guidance cautions that not every investment site or device supports passkeys. |
| Physical security key or token | A physical key is a second factor. The FTC describes security keys as the strongest method among the 2FA options it discusses. Ask the brokerage which keys or standards it accepts, whether your phone supports the needed USB or NFC connection, and what backup or recovery process it offers. FTC guidance and SEC brokerage guidance explain the option. |
| Authenticator app | An app can generate a code or provide an approval prompt without relying on text messages. The FTC notes this avoids the specific SIM-swap exposure of SMS and the email-account exposure of emailed codes. Confirm the brokerage accepts the app and plan for a secure account-recovery route when changing phones. FTC guidance. |
| SMS or email code | A code is better than password-only access if this is the brokerage’s available option, but SMS may be exposed if someone takes over your phone number. Email codes rely on the security of your email account. Protect both accounts with unique passwords and MFA, and never disclose a code to an unexpected caller or texter. FTC guidance and FINRA guidance on SIM swapping. |
| Device biometrics | A brokerage may offer fingerprint, face, voice, or iris safeguards, particularly on mobile, but availability and implementation differ. Check whether the biometric unlocks the device, authenticates to the brokerage, or does both. SEC investor guidance. |
These are general method comparisons, not a ranking of brokerages or a claim that any specific firm supports a particular option. Ask your brokerage about compatibility and recovery before making a key or passkey your only way to sign in.

Set up your account securely
- Start from a trusted route. Open the brokerage’s official app or type its known web address; a known bookmark is also useful. Review security settings and contact information from inside the account rather than following an unexpected email, text, or social-media link. A lock icon or HTTPS alone does not prove a page is genuine. SEC brokerage guidance.
- Create a unique password or passphrase. Do not reuse the brokerage password for email or other accounts. Use a password manager to generate and save distinct credentials if helpful. The SEC’s 2026 investor bulletin advises a strong passphrase where supported, otherwise a strong password; FINRA also recommends different passwords for each account. SEC; FINRA.
- Enable the strongest available MFA. Choose a supported passkey or security key if it suits your devices and recovery needs; otherwise consider an authenticator app before SMS or email codes. If the brokerage offers only text codes, use them while securing the phone number and email account.
- Store recovery information safely. If the firm permits a backup method, configure it and keep recovery details somewhere protected—not in an unprotected note or ordinary email. Recovery controls differ by brokerage, so follow the firm’s instructions and understand what you will need if a device is lost. SEC; FINRA.
- Turn on account alerts. Enable notices for logins, failed attempts, password or profile changes, trades, transfers, and linked external-account changes where offered. Menus and available alert types vary by firm. SEC investor guidance.
- Secure the phone. Use a passcode and automatic locking, install operating-system and app updates, and download the brokerage app only from its official app-store listing. Remove apps you do not trust. SEC; FINRA.
- Protect your mobile number. Add a PIN to your wireless-carrier account if supported, and limit public personal details that could help someone impersonate you to the carrier. FINRA.
- Avoid leaving a session open. Do not use public or shared devices for brokerage access when possible. If you use another computer, sign out and clear traces of the session as appropriate. SEC; FINRA.
Recognize the main account-takeover risks
Phishing and fake sign-in pages
Criminals may use deceptive messages or websites to steal login details or MFA codes. Reach the brokerage through its app, a known bookmark, or an address you type yourself. Do not give a code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be helping with a security problem. HTTPS does not by itself establish that a site belongs to your brokerage. SEC brokerage guidance; FTC.

SIM swapping and number transfers
If a criminal persuades a carrier to transfer your number, they may receive texted login codes. Prefer MFA that does not depend on your mobile number when the brokerage supports it, and protect the carrier account with a PIN. FINRA; FTC.
Reused credentials and unsafe downloads
A password exposed on another service can put a reused brokerage password at risk. Unique credentials limit that spillover. Keep your phone patched and avoid unknown downloads, which can carry malicious software. FINRA; SEC.

What to do about an unexpected alert
- Do not use a link in the alert to sign in. Open the official app or reach the brokerage through a trusted contact route.
- Review recent logins, transactions, profile details, and linked accounts. If you can, revoke unfamiliar sessions or devices.
- If credentials may be compromised, change them from the trusted route and review or reset MFA and recovery settings as appropriate.
- Contact the brokerage promptly using its official channel and follow its account-security and reporting process. Firm-specific response and recovery procedures vary. Interagency guidance highlights monitoring, logging, reporting, and customer-contact procedures as useful security controls.
This is general U.S.-focused account-security information, not individualized investment advice. The SEC’s 2026 investor bulletin represents staff views and does not create new legal obligations; brokerage controls and supported authentication methods vary.
