Choose an online trading platform by matching its investments and services to your needs, then comparing total costs, order handling, firm background, and account security. A zero-commission headline is not enough: account fees, investment expenses, execution, product limits, and the help available can all affect whether a broker is a good fit.
This guide focuses on U.S. brokerage accounts. Fees, features, rules, and protections vary by firm and can change, so confirm current terms in the broker’s disclosures before opening an account.

Start with what you need the platform to do
Before comparing providers, write down what you expect to invest in and how you expect to use the account. FINRA’s guidance identifies your goals, planned investment amount, desired level of guidance, and the firm’s range of products and services as factors in choosing a broker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Investments: Identify the securities or other investments you want to trade, and verify that the broker offers them.
- Account type: Check that the account type you need is available and note any eligibility requirements or restrictions.
- Guidance: Decide whether you want self-directed investing, advice, or another level of support; compare the services actually included.
- Usage: Consider how often you expect to trade, how much you plan to invest, and whether you need particular research, data, or device features.
- Assistance: Compare support channels and the help offered with account and order issues rather than assuming service is the same across low-cost providers.
FINRA’s broker-selection guidance and the SEC’s Choosing a Broker-Dealer provide questions to consider when evaluating a firm.

Compare the full cost, not just the trade commission
A displayed commission is only one possible charge. Ask for the broker’s current fee schedule and review the account agreement and relationship summary. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: How to Open a Brokerage Account explains that commissions are fees paid to a broker-dealer for executing trades and describes markups or markdowns when a firm trades from its own inventory.
- Trade commissions and markups or markdowns
- Platform, maintenance, inactivity, minimum-balance, or other account fees
- Transfer, account-closure, and wire fees
- Expenses charged by the investment itself, such as a fund’s costs, where applicable
Distinguish charges from the broker from expenses associated with an investment. Terms may depend on the security, account, and agreement, so do not assume a headline rate applies to every trade. The SEC advises: “Before opening your brokerage account, make sure you understand what fees will apply to your account.”

Assess features and order execution
A platform feature matters if it supports the way you plan to invest. Verify the broker’s current materials for tradable investments, account types, order types, research and market-data access, charting, mobile and desktop functions, and support availability. Offerings can change.

When you submit an online order, it goes to the broker, which decides where to send it for execution. The SEC says a broker may route an order to an exchange, market maker, electronic communications network (ECN), or its own inventory. Some market makers may pay for order flow, and a broker may execute an order internally. Brokers have a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available, but that is not a promise of the best imaginable price or a better-than-quoted fill on every order. Review the firm’s routing and execution disclosures; the SEC explains the process in Executing an Order.

“Price improvement” is the possibility of execution at a better price than the current quote, not a guarantee. Execution quality can involve price and speed, as well as whether the order type suits the trade.
Know how order types behave
- Limit order: Sets the highest price you will pay to buy or the lowest price you will accept to sell. The order may not execute.
- Market order: Prioritizes execution, but the fill price can differ from the displayed quote, particularly in fast-moving or less-liquid markets.
Names and instructions can differ between brokers, so check exactly how a platform handles each order type. Learn how to enter, review, and cancel orders. Confirm whether an order filled or cancellation succeeded before submitting a duplicate. The SEC’s Types of Orders bulletin, updated August 18, 2026, explains common order types.

Check account and settlement rules
In a cash account, payment and resale timing rules can affect what you may do after a trade. Do not assume that you can fund a purchase by immediately reselling it. Check the broker’s current guidance for your account type and the applicable settlement rules. The SEC’s Online Investing guidance discusses the need to understand these rules.
Check the firm, representative, and protection limits
Use official tools to check a brokerage firm and, where relevant, the individual representative. Review registration and disciplinary information, then read the firm’s relationship summary and account documents to understand its services, fees, and conflicts. FINRA’s broker-selection guidance links to resources for checking firms and investment professionals.

If investor protection is relevant to your decision, check whether the broker is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) and consult SIPC’s current materials for the scope of coverage. SIPC protection may apply to customer securities and cash when a member brokerage fails under the statutory framework. It does not insure investment value, protect against market declines, or guarantee performance.

The SEC’s 2026-updated bulletin, Protecting Your Online Investment Accounts from Fraud, recommends two-step verification or multi-factor authentication (MFA) when available. Turn it on if offered, use strong, unique credentials, and review the provider’s current documentation for security alerts, supported authentication methods, and account-recovery options. Authentication choices vary by provider; check directly rather than assuming a particular method is supported.
Use a consistent comparison when you shortlist brokers
Compare actual providers against the same questions, using the account and trading pattern you expect to have. The framework below is a checklist, not a ranking.

| What to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service and product fit | Does the broker support the investments and account types you need? Are there restrictions, minimums, or guidance options? | A provider’s offering may not suit your intended use. |
| Total costs | What are the commissions, markups or markdowns, account fees, transfer and closure costs, and relevant investment expenses? | The displayed trade commission does not capture every potential cost. |
| Execution and order controls | Where can orders be routed? Which order types are available? How can you check order status or cancel? | Routing, execution, and order controls can affect a transaction’s outcome. |
| Background and protection | What do official records show about the firm and, where applicable, the representative? Is the firm an SIPC member? | Registration and disciplinary checks add context; SIPC protection has limits. |
| Security and usability | Is MFA available? Which methods, alerts, recovery options, and support channels are offered? | Security tools and account access procedures vary by provider. |
| Support | Which channels can you use for help with account or order problems, and what assistance is included? | The available service should match the help you expect to need. |
For infrequent trading, recurring account charges and investment range may deserve more attention. A more active trader may want to examine execution, order controls, market data, and platform costs closely. These priorities depend on your own use; no single profile makes one broker best for everyone.
SEC Investor.gov puts the distinction succinctly: “Online trading is quick and easy, but online investing takes time.” Use the platform comparison to check whether a broker suits your needs, and read its current disclosures before opening an account.
