For U.S. holiday flights, start by comparing your exact route and dates, then use any route-specific historical price insight available in Google Flights. If your plans are flexible, track the fare while you compare alternate travel dates and routings. Historical averages can help you decide whether to buy or wait, but they cannot predict the fare for your individual itinerary.
How to decide whether to book now or wait
“Should you buy today, or wait to see if fares drop next week?” Google’s October 5, 2026 analysis treats that as a common booking dilemma. The practical answer depends on whether your dates are fixed and what the current fare looks like for your route—not on a universal best day to buy.
- Search your actual route and dates. Review the current fare and, where Google Flights provides it, the historical insight for that route and itinerary. Google describes a “cheapest time to book” insight for the selected destination and dates; use it as context, not a forecast. Google’s 2026 holiday analysis explains the historical booking windows.
- Choose your priority. If your dates are set, booking earlier can protect the itinerary you want. James Byers, Group Product Manager, Search, wrote in Google’s 2026 analysis: “When your dates are already set, booking early is the safest bet to protect your itinerary.” That advice is about securing a fixed plan, not a promise that today’s fare is the lowest possible one.
- If you can wait, track the fare. Set a price alert for the dates you are considering and watch for a significant change while you check acceptable alternatives. Google has described price tracking and “Any dates” tracking in its feature guidance, but the older description of the feature does not establish that every option is available in the current interface. Google’s flight-search feature overview describes those tracking features.
- Compare the full itinerary before buying. Check alternate departure and return days, nonstop and connecting flights, and separate one-way fares against the round trip. Judge the total fare alongside travel time and whether the itinerary works for your plans.
Google’s current booking-window analysis uses five years of aggregated Google Flights data. Its 2026 figures below are broad historical averages for U.S. departures; they are not a guarantee for a particular airline, route, cabin, or holiday trip.
Historical booking windows for U.S. holiday flights
Google’s 2026 analysis reports the average point at which fares reached a low and the broader range in which prices were historically low. A range means cheaper fares appeared across a span of days in the data; it does not identify the best day for your specific trip.

These are historical estimates, not deadlines. Waiting for the average-low date could mean losing a convenient departure, a seat on a preferred flight, or the fare you can currently accept. For a fixed itinerary, weigh the value of securing it against the possibility of a later fare change.
Which travel dates can lower the fare?
In Google’s 2026 analysis, the day of the week you fly had a larger historical relationship with price than the day you purchased. Flights departing Monday and returning Tuesday or Wednesday were about 14% cheaper than weekend flights; Google reports savings of up to 20% domestically compared with leaving and returning on Sunday. These are observed averages and comparisons, not guaranteed discounts.

Holiday schedules can make the cheapest dates inconvenient: the lowest-priced itinerary may require traveling on the holiday itself, shortening a visit, or shifting when you see family. Compare the fare difference with the value of the time you would give up. By contrast, buying on Wednesday rather than Sunday was only about 1.4% cheaper in Google’s data, so there is little reason to delay a purchase simply to target a particular weekday.
Domestic and international advice differ
U.S. domestic flights
The domestic and holiday windows above can help frame a decision, but exact-route information matters more than applying an average mechanically. Google’s published analysis is based on U.S. departures; travelers starting elsewhere should seek data relevant to their market rather than assume these windows apply.
International flights, including Europe
Google reports an average historical low 89 days before international departures, but says the price drop across its 50–133-day low-price range is insignificant and recommends booking as early as possible. For Europe, its reported average low is 90 days before departure, and the low-price range begins 49 or more days before takeoff. These figures do not support waiting for a domestic-style holiday sweet spot; if your international dates are set, compare fares early and book when the itinerary and price work for you.
When a connection or separate one-way tickets may help
Compare nonstop with one-stop itineraries
Google’s 2026 analysis found nonstop tickets averaged 20% more than connecting flights. A connection may lower the fare, but it adds travel time and itinerary complexity. Compare the complete trip—including layover duration and whether the connection fits your needs—rather than treating the average price difference as a guaranteed saving on your route.
Price two one-way tickets against a round trip
KAYAK’s 2026 holiday analysis found that its Hacker Fares—combining separate one-way tickets—could save up to 29% domestically and 30% internationally versus a round trip on routes represented in its analysis. Those are maximum observed comparisons, not expected savings for every traveler. Check the total for your dates and route before deciding; KAYAK says prices vary and savings are not guaranteed. KAYAK’s 2026 holiday comparison primarily uses searches from April 1 through September 1, 2026, for travel from November 20, 2026, through January 6, 2027, compared with corresponding prior-year search and travel periods; its airfare trend charts include searches through October 4, 2026. It reports average economy return tickets and notes that prices vary. Google’s 2026 booking-window analysis uses five years of aggregated Google Flights data. The different datasets and methods are useful for broad context, not interchangeable predictions for an individual booking.
