Buying groceries in bulk can save money—but only if the price per portion you’ll actually eat is lower and you can use the food before it spoils or loses quality. Plan meals first, compare unit prices, account for edible yield and storage, and buy larger amounts only when you have a realistic use for them.
Is buying groceries in bulk actually cheaper?
Sometimes. A lower shelf price per pound or ounce is not automatically a lower cost per meal. The real comparison includes how much of the package is edible, whether you will use it in time, and any extra preparation or storage it requires. The USDA Economic Research Service summarizes research finding that bulk purchasing can reduce food costs, while noting that refrigeration, storage, and spoilage can eventually outweigh the savings. That report analyzes institutional purchasing and earlier studies; it does not predict how much an individual household will save.

A simple rule: buy the larger package only when its price advantage survives those costs and you have room to store it safely. Food discarded later is not a bargain. USDA MyPlate puts it plainly: “Don’t overbuy foods that you will throw out later.” USDA MyPlate’s budget guidance recommends planning meals, checking sales, and comparing unit prices.
How to compare bulk grocery prices
- Plan meals and quantities. List what your household expects to eat before the next shopping trip. For perishables, treat that quantity as a ceiling—not as a reason to buy a larger package.
- Compare the same units. Check the shelf label for price per ounce, pound, quart, or another consistent unit. If that price is not shown, convert package sizes to a common unit and divide the total price by the amount.
- Compare what you will actually eat. When package forms differ, account for peel, bones, trimming, drained weight, or servings. A lower price per pound may not mean a lower cost per edible portion.
- Add the costs the unit price leaves out. Consider likely waste, preparation effort, storage space, and any extra trips or energy the purchase could require. If these costs erase the discount, a smaller package may be the better buy.
- Check your storage and use plan. Buy more only if you know how you will use it, the adjusted cost is still lower, and you can store it appropriately. Otherwise, buy a smaller amount and replenish it later.
USDA’s Food Buying Guide yield tables show how to compare fresh, canned, and frozen green beans by usable quantity and cost per serving. Its figures are worked examples, not current retail prices. The guide also notes that its raw-food cost calculations do not include labor or storage costs.

Which groceries are worth buying in bulk?
Start with foods your household already eats regularly and can store properly. USDA MyPlate identifies whole grains, canned or dried beans, and frozen vegetables as examples that can make sense in larger quantities because they store well. That is category guidance, not a guarantee that every large package is cheaper.
- Whole grains: Consider a larger package if you use them often and have suitable pantry storage.
- Canned or dried beans: Buy more when they fit meals you already plan to make and you can store the unused amount appropriately.
- Frozen vegetables: A larger quantity may work if you have freezer space and a plan to use it.
For fresh produce and other short-lived foods, compare a smaller fresh pack, a larger fresh pack, and canned or frozen alternatives when they suit the recipe. Weigh price per usable serving against preparation, storage, expected time before spoilage, convenience, and recipe fit. A cheaper package is not helpful if it goes unused.

How to keep bulk purchases safe
Storage is part of the cost calculation, but it is also a food-safety requirement. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service advises shoppers buying for large groups to plan for enough refrigerator and freezer space. Its food-shopping guidance, last updated December 17, 2024, recommends separating raw meat, poultry, and seafood from other groceries, buying cold foods last, and going straight home.
- Check refrigerator and freezer capacity before buying foods that need chilling.
- Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood separate from other groceries during shopping and transport.
- Pick up chilled foods near the end of the trip and head home promptly.
- Refrigerate perishables within two hours, or within one hour when the temperature is above 90°F (32.3°C).
A quick decision before you buy
Ask yourself three questions at the shelf: Is the larger package cheaper for the amount we will actually eat? Do we have a realistic plan to use it before it spoils? Can we store it safely without adding costs that wipe out the discount? If any answer is no, choose the smaller amount.
