You can review and delete saved chats in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, but each service has different controls. Before removing anything, distinguish deleting a conversation from archiving it or turning off future activity: those actions have different effects, and deleting a chat may not erase every related file or provider-held copy immediately.
Know what each control does
- Archive: Removes a conversation from the regular chat list while keeping it in the account. It is not deletion.
- Delete: Removes a chat from the account’s visible history. The provider may retain data for a stated period or under specific exceptions.
- Activity or model-improvement settings: Change how some future conversations or activity records are handled; they do not necessarily delete chats already saved.
- Export: Creates a copy of available account data so you can review or save it before deleting conversations.
Menu names and available controls can vary by device, app version, account plan, and organization settings. If a label differs, consult the service’s current help page. Work or school accounts may have controls set by an administrator.
ChatGPT: find, archive, or delete conversations
Review or find a chat
- Open ChatGPT and use the chat history list or its Search control to locate a conversation.
- If it is not in the regular sidebar, open Settings > Data controls > Archived chats (the control may appear as View archived chats on some devices).
- If history appears missing, confirm that you are signed into the correct account and workspace.
Delete one chat or all chats
- For one conversation, open its more-options menu in chat history, choose Delete, and confirm.
- To remove all conversations, open Settings > Data controls and select Delete all chats. Read the confirmation carefully; this cannot be undone and may include chats in projects.
OpenAI says a deleted chat disappears from your account view immediately and is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days. OpenAI’s stated exceptions include data already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or data it must retain longer for security or legal obligations. Archive if you only want a cleaner sidebar
Use the chat’s more-options menu and choose Archive. Archived chats remain saved and searchable; you can manage or unarchive them under Settings > Data controls > Archived chats. Archiving does not change the chat’s retention period. OpenAI puts the distinction plainly: “Archiving removes the chat from the regular sidebar but does not delete it.”

Check model improvement, temporary chats, and files separately
- Improve the model for everyone: This setting is in Settings > Data controls. Turning it off means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models; it does not remove saved chats from history. Details are in OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.
- Temporary chats: They do not appear in history, create or update memories, or improve models. OpenAI may retain them for up to 30 days for safety. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat.
- Library files: Deleting a chat does not delete files saved separately in Library. Remove those files separately if you want them gone; see OpenAI’s Library instructions.
Export before deleting
Signed-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users can request a data copy through settings. Self-service export is not available for Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces; contact the workspace owner. Follow OpenAI’s export instructions.
Claude: review and delete chats
Find a conversation and remove it
- On the web app, find the conversation in the left sidebar or open Chats and tasks to view history.
- Open the conversation’s ⋮ menu, choose Delete, and confirm. Claude also provides deletion controls on iOS and Android.
- To delete several at once, select one or more chats—or Select all—and confirm deletion.
Anthropic says a deleted consumer conversation disappears from history immediately and is deleted from backend systems within 30 days. Other account data, including projects and account information, remains unless you delete it separately. Deleting the account is permanent and removes access to account and conversation data. Export Claude data first
Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can request conversation and account data from Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop. You cannot start an export in the iOS or Android apps. Anthropic emails a download link after processing; the link expires 24 hours after delivery. See Anthropic’s export instructions.
Gemini: review chats and manage activity
Find recent chats
- Sign in to Gemini and open the app menu.
- Look under Recent for recent or pinned conversations. For personal accounts, the available history controls require Keep Activity to be on.
- If you use a work or school Google account, a Workspace administrator may control activity settings.
Delete a conversation
- Mobile app: Open the menu, press and hold a chat under Recent, then tap Delete.
- Web: Open the menu, select the chat, then choose More > Delete.
Google says deleting a chat from pinned or recent chats also removes its related activity from Gemini Apps Activity and can delete content created in the conversation, such as Canvas documents or apps. Check Google’s Gemini chat instructions if the controls differ.

Review or delete Gemini Apps Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity through the app’s profile or settings path, or visit Google’s Gemini activity page. When signed in with Keep Activity on, you can review prompts, delete activity, or turn Keep Activity off. Turning it off alone does not delete existing activity; choose a deletion action to remove past records. Google’s instructions are at Gemini Apps Activity controls.
Understand Google’s stated retention limits
Google says conversations may remain associated with your account for up to 72 hours when Keep Activity is off, to provide the service and process feedback. Conversations reviewed or annotated by human reviewers are stored separately and are not deleted when you delete account activity; Google says they can be retained for up to three years. These are Google’s stated Gemini handling periods, not a rule for other chatbots. Gemini Apps Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; Google also offers 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. See Google’s Gemini Apps Activity retention details.

These services do not use identical controls or retention practices. Also, a self-service option shown in a personal account may be unavailable or managed differently in an organization workspace.
